Just taking a wild stab in the dark, but I'd say that he probably rates him as a player...

Crazy isn't it?

He's one of our most important players, due to his age and talent. Now that he's over his injuries the general footy public will also discover Malty is spot on for any praise heaped on the boy!

I've said this before: With no hyperbole whatsoever, there are no traits that one would wish for in a midfielder than John McCarthy doesn't possess.

He's got potentially above average size, strength, hardness, skills, goal sense and versatility for his position.

If he can get healthy and stay fit, then there's no reason that he can't be a gem for us.

His decision making and awareness for a young player is excellent, and he has good natural strength. So when his body matures some he has all the tools to be a well rounded and damaging midfielder. Maybe Mick thinks these are good attirbutes!

I already know why MM loves McCarthy, and it had to do with one half of VFL football earlier this year.

Out at Scum Park (otherwise known as Visy Park), McCarthy had returned from injury, and in the first half racked up more then 20 possessions, including an amazing 2nd quarter where everyone at the ground was gobsmacked at how easily he could find the ball, and how well he used it.

Just before half time, he injured himself again, and we didn't see him for another 6-7 weeks.

I think J-Mac has as much talent as any of our young players, if he is able to get lucky and stay fit for one full season, you all will see why MM loves him.

I watched him when he came back after that 7 or 8 weeks he was out and he had about 12 possessions in the first quarter and kicked 2 goals. He's talented but I especially love his attack at the ball not affraid to put his head over the ball. Just needs a bit of luck with his hamstrings and he could be very handy in the senior team if not I'll be happy to watch him dominate in the reserves :)

because if he stays fit his gonna be an out and out gun I am tossing up between getting a 34 or 3 on my back next season

Very talented young player and very smart footballer.

Praying he can keep his bothersome hammys in tact, because if he can stay fit I'm sure he will have a great year.

Agree what I have seen, He could be something Special. His Kicking is also very good

That VFL game was amazing, took pack marks, kicked goals, set them up. I remember at the time talking to a guy I was with and he said "he's a beauty".

Let's hope his injuries are behind him because he has the talent to make it at this level.

Watched a Foxtel replay of the 1995 Pies vs Coasters 'Classic Game' till 3am late last night (Lethal versus MM). A young Scott Burns , tackled anything standing in his way, including ruckmen. He too had a bad year or so with hammies and came back to be our star. So it's possible. JMac is a lovely fast low kick, rather than Burns' more whippey style, but JM's may be a style stretching those hammies too much until fully recovered?

Notice that no-one mentioned JMac's 'speed'. He looks indeed faster than Burns, but both are/weren't sprinters - just 'fast' in reading the play better than their opponents and getting there first more often than not.

He's had 8 AFL games, mostly on and off the HFF. Those uptight about him may be right on that position. Suspect he isn't a HFF, but it was good experience. Like Burns, suspect he may be better on and behind the ball, once fit, and the forward stuff can come later.

We need to develop Beams, Sidey and JMac this coming year. They are the future to backstop our AA-class centre line of eg Didak, Swan, Davis and a not too shabby followers line of Jolly, Pendlebury, Ball (backed up by Fraser, O'Bree).

JMac, like the young Burns, just has a 'presence' on the field (when he can get on it). It is an indefinable quality that a coach or all of us would just like to wake up and find in our Christmas 'stockings'.

Don't write him off just yet. In that 1995 game there was also a loud-mouthed brat running around who a few years earlier couldn't get a game in the juniors. He bad-mouthed the umpires something shocking; did a lot of good stuff and still a lot of shocking stuff too. How did the umpires ever eventually award Nathan Buckley a Brownlow Medal?

JMac-sceptics....just give it some time and then either enjoy being right or in seeing 'unlikely' folk like Burns and Bucks step up and grow.

People must have different opinions of J Mac on this board. If he has a good pre-season and stays fit, he would start round 1. He's a very promising talent, and could easily be a 20-25 possesion player. I rate him very highly.

care to give us some reasoning there or are you just speaking out of your behind.

Has a bottom age player in his first season he broke into the side in the 2nd half of the yar and held his spot and played well including a very valuable game in the final against the crows.

This year missed most of the season with injury yet was picked to play seasons in round 22 with almost no prep. Showed how tough he was in that game getting up after a massive collision.

The kid has very sure hands, is a good kick has decent pace and finds the footy. Most of all he had great size and is tough as nails. He is in my opinion thec closest thing to scott burns we have on out list at the moment and just needs experience and to stay fit.

this!
fair enough he has had injuries but i don't think he that talented. decision making isn't that good. ie
saw him kick the wrong way 50meters in a VFL match this year.. can't remember who he was against but that shows he either disinterested or doesn't have any concerntration.
hope he makes it but i see him as a plodder!
