I rate him extremely highly. I can see how people may think he is over rated as he gets some huge wraps on bigfooty but I think the wraps are a projection (albeit optimistic one) of the skills he has shown.

As VV has said in his short time on the list he has shown that he has every needed aspect to be a star midfielder in at least above average potential. As a first year player with no pre-season he broke into the AFL side (luckily though) and had an impact with a couple of game just below 20 possies most of which where used extremely well. One drilled entry into the 50 that was sublime. Won a lot of his own ball for a kid, clean hands around the stoppages and well hard.

If he gets the fitness base (and an injury free year is the best place to start) he has all the tools.

Excuse my ignorance, but where is he at injury-wise atm....

Am I correct in thinking that he returned from injury late last season and has been okay since? Did he go to Arizona with the main group?

People must have different opinions of J Mac on this board. If he has a good pre-season and stays fit, he would start round 1. He's a very promising talent, and could easily be a 20-25 possesion player. I rate him very highly.

I guess I'm on the other side of the fence.

I recognise his skill and if he does get his body right then he will be solid contributor.

The signs he has showed at VFL level were fantastic and he had some really nice performances, but Sidebottom I would rate even higher and say that he showed fantastic consistancy and consistantly dominated at that level. While McCarthy has that Burns like toughness I still prefer Sidebottom's consistancy and the package he has to offer more.

Just with the addition of Ball, then with Beams and Sidebottom developing not so sure he would be a sure thing as a walk into the side.

Would still consider him a fringe guy even when fit.

Probably a 27th/28th man on our list.

Will get games next season without a doubt if he can keep healthy, but can't see him being a regular 22 guy. Will certainly have to work hard to earn a place in this team on a regular basis.

He isn't unbelievable in his talent pool, but he has shown signs of untapped ability when he has played. It boggles my mind that some people are ready to write off a 20 year old who has only gotten 8 games under his belt due to injury, and has the full endorsement of the coach.

Give him time to shine fellas, he might not get into the side often next season but I wish him all the best in playing his best football possible.

Don't disagree with your call on Sidebottom, probably ahead at this stage, but reckon they will both be gems.
Do disagree that he is 27/28th on the list. Think he will take over some more seasoned players in 2010.

I rate them about the same as 2 very Important Players for the Future:thumbsu:

I saw him play in a preseason game in Albany (WA southwest) just a couple of months after we recruited him. HE WILL BE A SUPERSTAR !!!!

I just hope it is for us, the last time I was that impressed with a young (unheralded) player was Harvey in his first couple of games for Saint Kilda

Jmac= most overated player on the list
talented but way overhyped by people on big footy.

Ben reid deserves that mantle , JMac has at least done something in the games hes played. Ben reid is lauded as the next chb of the century and has still done nothing at afl level yet.

To be fair to Reid, he hasn't even been tried at CHB in the AFL yet, so to say he is shown nothing, while being accurate, also shows that we are yet to see whether Ben can play as a defender at senior level.

McCarthy also hasn't shown a heap at senior level, although injuries and lack of match fitness have held him back from showing his best.

Reid, McCarthy and Blight are the 3 "unheralded" players to watch next year.

Totally agree with this. I won't argue that Ben has a lot of potential talent, but everyone thinks he's going to be in our starting 22 at CHB when the poor kid hasn't even played that position at AFL level. Ever.

I think he's got the Rusling Disorder where the less AFL games he plays - the better he apparently gets.
