Not a bad debut by JMac for his new club Port Adelaide, 23 disposals,1 goal, score of 100 in Super coach, it`s a shame he couldn`t cement a spot in our side.i always rated him.our loss is Ports gain.

They have him on SEN at the moment Matty,is basically saying when you get the opportunity to fit into a side structure and given a defined role it has given him the confidence to show his new club what he can produce,, Simon Buckley ha!

Hey, if I was J-Mac I would have left too, I think it's one of those situations that helps both clubs and the player, we get an open spot on our senior list, he gets games at a lower club and the lower club gets much needed midfield depth.

It's just a pity he could never get fit while he was with us, and I wish him all the success with Port (so much so he's in my Supercoach team).

102 Supercoach points too for J-Mac.:thumbsu:

Danny Stanley mach 2.

Was he going to be in our best 22 long term? Nope. Will he play a role for a bottom 10 team? Yep. Will Lachlan Keefe be in a similar situation 2 years from now? Probably.

Ultimately that's the price you pay for being a top 2 team you just can't keep them all. It's happened to Geelong with Prismall, Mumford and Laidler and the Hawks copped it with Kennedy, Lisle and McGlynn.

Good luck to him this year I sincerely hope he can have a season much the same as Stanley last year!!

Mumford is top line, he just got thrown an unbelievable offer from Sydney. He's a great bloody ruckman no matter who he plays for.

Agree with Scodog and Matty, am delighted for him he did well.

It was the right decision he made for the reasons stated above.

Great that he helped Port get off to such a good start.

J Mac's early games indicated he was courageous and an accumulator if played out of the middle as he was in the VFL. His AFL roles with Collingwood restricted a true exposure of his worth, because he was given peripheral roles rather than thrust into the furnace as he should be with Port. I did not see the game but hope that McCarthy makes a real success after the injury plagued early years at Collingwood.

Maybe we had better players in those Postions

Too right he is. But at the time for some reason instead of cutting Blake loose and using the extra money on Mumford they pulled the wrong rein and the big guy was squeezed out. FWIW Kennedy was in a similar position when he left and will at the very least be in the AA squad this year.

True we had better players but he would be getting a game now if he was at the club. We have been demoted by the predictors of premierships to third this year because of our perceived lack of depth. Apparently in the 2nd half JMac had a real influence on the game with his strength, poise and accurate disposal. People were glad to see the ball in his possession!

Could have used him v Hawks.

Surely kicks better than Sinclair and Rounds.

Wouldnt get a game ahead of Didak Krakouer Macaffer Johnson Wellingham or Beams.

Maybe or maybe not hes a better player than Rounds and Sinclair, who have not been in the system as long as McCarthy. He was squeezed out due to the salary cap.

Good luck to him but successful teams need to sacrifice players sometimes.

I'm sure Prismall has had the occasional good game too.

Don't compare Sinclair's kicking to Rounds'. And J-Mac has a penchant for kicking over the target's head. Has been doing it since the day dot.

Also, happy for J-Mac but wasn't thrilled with him when he left. He ostensibly wasn't happy with the opportunities he got, but from where I sat, he was included on a lot of occasions when he'd only recently come back from one of his litany of injuries, and hadn't really dominated at VFL level. I think he was a favourite of MM, if anything. And then he took longer than some to adjust to the pace at AFL whereas others (eg. Fasolo) picked it up almost instantly.

I think McCarthy will be a "good" AFL player, but I don't think he was particularly hard done by at Collingwood for opportunities.

I am glad he is doing well else where; I was super glad for him to start in their best 22.
I liked what he did with us sometimes, but, he was not strong enough, often enough for us and we could not predict our injuries.

JMac wouldn't have played where Rounds plays, and Sinclair I guess the club felt he had more upside. I don't think JMac is going to get significantly better than he currently is, tbh.

More proof that the J-Mac love wasn't wrong from a lot on this board.

Yet we kept Simon Buckley ahead of him.

The club has stated they wanted to retain him. McCarthy decided to move for opportunity and you can't blame him for that. Not sure what the club has done wrong here?

Always knew he was a good player and would be close to a stand-out at Port. Bloody Simon Buckley... J-Mac good value in SC! 282,000 and 102 points! :thumbsu:

I always liked the way MacCarthy played but he was well down the pecking order and was never going to be useful to the side unless there were injuries. He's a midfielder and plays his best football there, but if he stayed with the Pies he would have kept being played out of position. All the best to him, I enjoyed seeing him run around and be useful in the PA side.

JMac is a far better kick than Sinclair. What upside does Sinclair have that Barham didn't? JMac would be in the team now ahead of Sinclair.

I hope he has a good career at Port Adelaide.

He now gets an opportunity to be a starting midfielder at AFL level whereas if he stayed with us, he would be a fringe midfielder/flanker at best.

Can't begrudge a guy for wanting a chance to test himself in his preferred position with added responsibility.

I said the club must feel that way, not me. I would much preferred to have JMac instead of Sinkers in the team but that's just me. That being said, like Quicky said, we didn't let him go - he left us for opportunity.

From Port review:
'John McCarthy:
Showed why we drafted him, and though had a quiet 2nd Quarter I felt his 1st really started us well. Kicked the first goal, and had a really good 3rd and 4th Quarter. I feel incredibly comfortable with the ball in his hand, has a great clearance kick from the middle. 7/10
