Ok, so Kane has decided he wants to return back to Melbourne. This is sad news but on the other hand we should be able to secure something very nice if he isn't used in the carey trade. IF he isn't used in the Carey trade what do you think we could get out of the clubs vying for his services? This could turn into a big bidding contest between all of the clubs if they want him that badly. So from each club what would we want (Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon maybe).

Poor Stenglein, the last two years his two housemates (Eccles and Johnson) have gone back to Victoria. I hope he'll be living on his own next year.

G'day snakebite, how r u?

Sorry to hear about Sugar leaving you guys, but he will be more than welcome down at Tigerland, which I hope is the case.

Now sugar is a good player, so what would you expect, I have heard from a reliable source that an offer of Jason Torney (25 year old reliable defender, from SA) and a third round draft pick has already been offered to the Crows and they are seriously considering this as it is Johnsons wish to go to the Tigers the club he grew up following!!

I believe it is a fair swap as Torney is a very solid and reliable defender that hardly makes a mistake and is only 1 year older than Johnno, and we throw the third pick in as a sweetner......for Sugar!:D

Whats your opinion snakey? and fellow Adelaidites?

Good luck to Kane, all the best for the rest of his career. He obviously doesn't want to be a part of the future (and a bright future too) at the Adelaide Football Club and I'd rather have someone who's here for the long haul. I mean if he'd rather play for Richmond, Hawthorn or Melbourne instead of the mighty Adelaide Crows, then I pity him. :D ;) Take care mate, and I hope the medical rooms of your future club are as good to you as ours were :p

And Tigerbob, don't be stupid mate :D

G'day Tigerbob. I'm good, yourself.

Anyway back to the topic. It depends on what other clubs are offering for Johnson. It is my understanding that he wants to return to Richmond to the team he grew up barracking for so It'd probably be the Crows aim to get him there as he requests. I personally would probably be looking for a second round draft pick from Richmond and Torney only because I haven't seen all that much of Torney so I'm not sure how well he'd fit into our team. It is however, a little surprising that Richmond can go for him with their salary cap.
If not this trade we're willing to do good by the Tigers and take that trouble-maker Ottens off your hands, Tigerbob. :D ;) :D ;)

LOL, no I think we might cope with that trouble maker named Ottens for a while!

ant, im not being stupid, this is what I have heard around town, I never said it was true, but watching Torney week in week out, he's not that far off from Johnson, in terms of importance to a team. I am actually devastated the club has let him go (for very suspicious reasons - not the salary cap) and most Tiger fans will agree with me!

Anyway im not here to convince you on how good Torney is lets just sit back and wait and see what our adminastrators do in order to get the deal done!

Good luck either way.

Are you sure?
Anyway we'll see what happens. Hopefully both clubs end up better off than they would have been if the two players had stayed.

Johnson Trade

I am so sad to see Johnson want to leave, he was one of my favourite players at the club:( :( :(
Now that we know I really hope that we dont use him in the Carey trade as they want Draft picks anyway, so they said.
It is my understanding that Torney has been delisted so he cannot be used in trades, isnt that right and also we could get him for nothing in the pre season draft if we wanted him, I beleive Johnsos to be a far more valuable player than Torney but mabe we could do something with Carlton, Mabe Camporeale as they are similar players, I know this topic was up before but now we know Kane is leaving.
ANyway Cheers
Jason
GO YOU CROWS (My Vacant Fav Player Spot Is Up Now);)

If we were to trade with Carlton do you think we could convince them to give us the #2 pick.;)
It's a very very long shot but with their trading history, you never know.

No Torney didn't get delisted he was told to search for a club of his choice and he would be traded there if the right offer came up. He chose Adelaide. Johnson has chosen Richmond. I wish it was as simple as that!

Maybe it can be?

Yea sad to see him go... but thats life I guess.

How does a Johnson for first rd pick or Fiora sound????

As for Toney and a 3rd rd pick, I'll give you Ben Marsh for that package

A sad day.

But if ever we are going to get a very good player in a trade then this is it.

I don't want us to use Johnson in the Carey deal. Carey will come to the Crows regardless. I say we try give up the 14 pick and a mid range player for Carey.

Let's use Johnson to get a very high draft pick or a quality key position player.

Our midfield is great. Even if we lose a couple of midfielders (Johnson and another in the Carey trade) we have still got a good solid midfield.

So why not trade Johnson for a key position player and strengthen our defence and forward line even more.

We have a rare chance to really get a decent forward that we have craved for so long. Let's not waste this opportunity.

As for Johnson to Richmond, if the Tigers can't afford Torney then a trade between Torney and Johnson isn't going to alleviate that problem.

i hope the admin at the crows are planning to do just that, try and strenghten our forward line or our defence. Our non existant forward line speaks for itself, and our two main defenders are starting to age (smart and hart). Smarty has maybe one or two yrs left, and harty has a little more, but the best idea would be to start preparing for when those guys leave

I don't think we need another forward with the likely addition of Carey. We had the 3rd or 4th best attack in the league this year and all the pressure has been on Burton and Stevens to perform with Welsh out and our other forwards out of form. Next year with Carey, a load of pressure will be taken off these guys and we'll be able to play the likes of Riccuito and MCleod in the midfield more often as Burton and Welsh can fill the half-forward spots.
What we need most IMO is another key defender and a back-up ruckman who can go forward and kick goals. If we can trade Johnson to get this we will definitely be a premiership contender for many years to come and Kane will miss out on a very exciting time at the club.

I disagree. We may have been the 3rd or 4th highest scoring team this year but a large credit for that must go to the midfield for their supply and for their own contribution to the scoring.

If you put the forward line side by side with all the other teams in the comp and compare them player for player, the Crows forward line wouldn't be in the top 10.

That's my opinion anyway.

just a thought:

if the crows can't retain a player who lives only an hour plane flight away from home, shouldnt the AFL give us more $$$ in the salary cap just like sydney and brisbane??

I agree Snakebiteone; a defender is what we need longer term (Given that we get Carey beforehand that is)

Is Torney that flash? Born in 1977 and the same height as Johnson doesnt make for an automatic swap.

Swapping Johnson for Torney and a 2nd or 3rd rd pick is basically horrible.

Torney has had a shocking year, and will never turn into a star player (Johnson has the potential to be up there).

If we wanted to trade with Richmond.. I would want either pick #4 or Fiora

And no BEN HOLLAND ;)

I'm with KC, in that we would want more for Johnson than Torney who has already been discarded. Wouldn't mind Fiora, but perhaps we could on-trade him to Port for Brogan & Thurstans (or S Bassett), which would solve or ruck/defensive height depth.

Also, do the Tigers think Johnson will accept less money than Torney with their cap problems? Gasper is the guy they should be trading (but not to the Crows!)

If we traded and got him...he better not room with Chris Judd!
EKA, I heard the Eagles aren't willing to offer much for Stinger & he is a very important player in the crows' midfield mix (ie. only real run-with player), so don't like your chances. Time for Stinger to get a girlfriend perhaps. ;)

Carlton Wont Trade

Carlton wont trade for Johnson because they'll get him for nothing with a top round draft pick if all deals fall through and Johnson is a free agent.

I'm sorry to see him go but if his heart isn't in it there's no point Adelaide fans dwelling on it.

I just can't believe you'd want to leave when the King is coming!

Not necessarily. Thankfully the AFL have been smart enough to introduce an NBA inspired lottery.

That way the top pick in the preseason draft could go randomly to any of the bottom 4 teams. Therefore Carlton have no guarantee of picking up the free agent of choice.

Hmmm... no. Just like Collingwood can't have more money to keep Nick Davis.

Adelaide have a lot more local players than Sydney or Brisbane, thats the difference.
