With our injury history, we can't be too safe and putting in game time in Roughead can't be a bad thing either.
Good point. I'm just a bit concerned that it's an intentional re-balance on our behalf and not about getting games into Roughy (I think he's playing good footy by the way). I think we had the defensive balance spot on in the finals last year, except needed an upgrade on Goldsack - which we've gotten with Moore.

After struggling to lock down a regular spot in a regular position in the wake of the Western Bulldogs’ fairytale premiership in 2016, Roughead decided he needed a fresh start by midway through last season.
The Magpies came to him with a role down back and Roughead was sold.
“The emotions of leaving were obviously really strong. I probably made the decision midway through the year that it was my last year at the Bulldogs,” he said.
“I went about trying to find a new home and the Magpies came to me and said: ‘We’ve got a position for you down back’.

“Versatility is a good thing to have — I can go in the ruck or go forward if I need to — but to be able to play in a key defensive post and work with the same six or seven guys each week and just be coached on my strengths around the aerial side of the game.

Every defender would be exposed if the mids didn't play their defensive role. He has been wonderful. What issue do you have with him?
First of all i’m definitely not a hater, being a former Vice Captain in his own right, and a well established good bloke, at the very least we have another great clubman.

If theres one thing that both a number of Bulldogs and Collingwood supporters have mentioned its him getting beaten on the lead. I think Collingwood have the support down back(that 2013/14 Bulldogs didnt) to mostly cover this weakness of his but theres still going to be occasions he gets done on the lead.

When we play sides like Melbourne/West Coast that are playing 2 ruckman, i think Roughead has even more of a place in our team. When we play sides he’s forced to man an experienced KPF, i get the nervs.

In forward 50 I agree, but I must say I'm surprised by that comment considering your opinion towards KPFs and height.

Why given the best KPF have high uncontested marks as well as a some contested (also my ideal KPP height is in the 193-197cm ranges with 193cm types needing great leaps and pace (Nick and Jack Reiwoldt).
I think too many people focus on CM when espousing a KP worth, note how many times people use Coxs contested stats as a measure of his worth but never ever point out his lack of ability to get free with any regularity (its nearly always hard work for him).
Pace is obviously a limiter for him but if he learns good early body work, subtle blocks from team mates, and timing he can get free as he has shown on occasions deep forward as a hit up target.

Taking uncontested marks shows you are capable of getting space on a lead or doubling back at the right time towards goal, if most of your ball comes through contested work it shows you lack ability to get easy ball.

Here are a few current and former champions marking stat:

Josh Kennedy (Carl/WCE) has taken 1319 marks with only 327 of them contested.
Lance Franklin (Haw/Syd) has taken 1618 total marks with only 479 contested.
Nick Reiwoldt (St.k) 2944 total marks with only 645 contested.
Matthew Lloyd (Ess) 1740 total, only 442 contested.
Jarryd Roughead (Haw) 1300 total, only 311 contested.
Johnathon Brown (Bris) 1813 total, only 490 contested.

I think that last paragraph is huge aswell, Rough has never had consistency in a position and now obviously has a role to grow into, curious to see how he improves.
exactly. When he was in the dogs, they moved him around throughout his whole career. Probably was never settled on one position, so to have one he can rely on, would feel nice for a player.

I agree with you. I think the ability to get seperation and thus uncontested marks is crucial. For that reason, as good as he is looking up forward in a contested marking situation, long term, I think Naughton from the Dogs will be a great CHB and not a forward.

But I don't understand why you are so concerned with our current set up of a bean pole for long contests and in WHE, JDG and Elliott, 3 blokes who are outstanding on the lead and at ground level (WHE excepted at ground level).

Because too often quality KPD shut down our KPF with relative ease and then control the defensive 50. I think our set up works vs particular sides very well but not teams with good structure and smart defenders.
I feel we lack that balanced KPF who is in those ranges i listed that's capable on the lead but also if needed can do the contested dump kicks and not just compete but win them.

Degoey is great on the lead and capable with body work but there are some situations that he struggles to compete, where some of the genuine KPFs will not only compete but have a chance of winning this includes some situations of 2v1s or players dropping in the hole. I think Degoey could still kick 40-50 however.

I like him as a fwd, as I do Elliott and sort of WHE (who plays higher up the ground but works back to goals). I don't dislike it completely, I just feel our fwd spine *read Cox and Mihocek* could be improved on.
Maybe its as simple as 1 extra quality KPF option I dont know but I just feel it lacks here. Also another role it lacks imo is a genuine fwd sneak who is great front and centre that provides that magic momentum swingers xfactor ground play. (all of degoey ellliott and Whe are irregular fwd rovers its not their bread and butter they do it well on occasion). Talking a L.Davis, Betts, Rioli, Bruce, Milne etc type.

Mihocek for me would benefit from a playing with 2 genuine KPF because I think as 3rd tall fwd oprtion he would excel but lacks the damage to play 2nd Kp and keep your McGoverns honest.

Hmm I think we were a bit short / undersized on the defensive side last year. We have certainly swung the other way. Whether it is too far I don't know yet.
Give them so time find their own space and role in the backline. Last years defense also didn't gel overnight.
To insert a injury prone prodigy and a veteran in the ranks was bound to cause some teething issues. Whether those issues will be permanent as it is just not the right mix of personnel mix ( the feeling I have with our fwd line ) , time will tell.

Has there ever been a KPD who never got beaten on a lead?

He looks awkward and slow at times, but he isnt getting beaten and is solid ball in hand.

He also gives us genuine height down back with Moore for those modern forwards/resting rucks.

The height is something we badly been missing down back.

Also make our Structure down back better

Still not 100% sold on him, looks slow and skills are questionable.
I get the not sold thing, fair enough.

He’s not slow, he’s sufficiently capable or medium level movement.
His skills are good. And excellent particularly in the air.

With Dunny going out, fortuitous we gained Roughead when we did for a packet of samboy chips.
Very capable replacement.
