He’s much better than Lobbe ever was but his last two weeks are a step back from last year. Hit out numbers ok, but not to advantage in any way. As a byproduct of the crazy number of frees he’s given away since the Meek game, he’s basically given up contesting in some throw ups which has allowed Grundy and Xerri to clear it themselves. His field kicking in open play was good yesterday but the absence of any marking presence, forward or back, is a worry especially now we don’t have Dixon to compete in packs along the wings and 50m arcs. At the least he has to be better at stopping the opposition ruck from marking. It’s too easy for them at the moment.

I'm not quite sure what the deal is but yeah as Crafty Bernado says, he use to run games out really hard last year. Dunno what is going on. Maybe Port's fitness program has caught up with him.

Also, he doesn't seem to be anywhere near the marking contest ever. It's almost like he's got bad eyesight or something. His around the ground work is limited.

I don't know why he's getting done for so many free kicks against him but you would think Lobbe would've worked out a plan to negate that. You'd think?

I think his general ruck and follow ups are pretty good. He's a decent kick when he's got time.

I don't watch the Magpies so I don't know if Visentini is the answer now or a bit down the track. A fair few people are pretty high on him. If he can get around the ground and take a few contested marks and intercepts, it would help us out a lot.
Only thing I can guess is that he's been overworked due to no other alternative.

Visentini in would be good, but the two big forwards has worked well for us.

There's your problem.
It's definitely been a weird year where he doesn't seem to be doing that much wrong in the ruck contest.

They look like a million other ones. I'm not as bothered by that.

However, the around the ground stuff is worrisome.

English is pushing 20 possessions and gets a lot of free kicks. Should be interesting.

Was he even that bad? I thought he was perfectly serviceable against the 2nd best ruck in the comp. 39-39 in hitouts and yea he got beaten, but it wasn’t embarrassingly bad like some are suggesting on here. It would be great if he stuck a few more marks around the ground and would also be amazing if the umps treated him the same way they treat every other ruck.

I think Sweet's, what's the word, ability to help the midfield get centre clearances for easy scoring opportunities is pretty darn good.

There are usually three or so times a game where we break out of the centre for goals without the opposition touching us and they are usually very quick. That's 18 to 24 points that the opposition cannot account for. That's a good thing to have. It goes a bit unnoticed.

He's probably knackered from rucking solo. It would explain his recent performances being down on what he is capable of.
Except the guys he's been destroyed by play more ruck minutes than him in Xerri and Gawn. On his hit outs he's not doing anything that Visentini couldn't do and he won't be out marked 6 times a game. I love sweet and what he can produce as a hit out ruck, but right now it's clear that we have a kid that deserves games over him.

Totally agree with this, I'd play him against his former side this week. But maybe a rest on the cards after that? Feel like Visentini could at the very least match ROB

It would be a bold call but I'd be all for it. Visentini's competitiveness is a natural fit for that match.

Sweet is the most competitive ruck we have had since Lade and Primus. In terms of experience he is behind most if not all of his opponenets but he never has been beaten or dominated at the taps this year. He is not matching some of them for possessions but he is very good at making a path for his teammates and putting pressure around the contest. He deserves to keep his spot. Having said that,Visentini should be given a chance to back him up next time we need to go two specialist rucks.

he has played 35 AFL games in total BUT only 23 AFL games for us.
Ta. So relatively inexperienced at the highest level with some serious development still to come.
Definitely needs to work on his marking and tap work but an excellent kick, competitive and mobile. Give him another 30 games (and hopefully better coaching) and we will have a better idea of his trajectory.
I’m tipping him to smash English this week.

The 2 things he needs to work on.

1. Find a way to not give away a million free kicks.
2. If he can't win a marking contest down the line, make sure the other guy doesn't either and go for a spoil/tap instead of not putting your arms up at all.

I think point one would depend on having a different coloured guernsey on.

We keep commenting on this...

Xerri took a grand total of 2 marks against us, both uncontested.
Grundy took a grand total of 1 mark, also uncontested.
Lloyd Meek too a grand total of 0 marks.
Rowan Marshall, 3, none contested.
Sam Draper had 2 marks both contested, Nick Bryan had 2 marks. I think both of Drapers were as a forward playing ruck against Sweet.
Nankervis, none at all.
Darcy Cameron 1 mark. None contested.

For a guy that someone said gets out marked 6 times a game. His direct opponent across 7 games there only have 9 marks. Total. None contested.

And just an example Darcy Cameron has 7,1,4,6,5,2 and 6 marks in each game this year.

Sweet had 3 marks against Collingwood, 2 against Richmond, 5 against Essendon, 0 against North and Saints, 1 against Sydney and Hawthorn.

Struggling without a decent option to give him a chop out, such as Dixon.

Getting smashed by the umps this year too.

Not droppable just yet, you have to play him against the Dogs, especially after how he played against them last year.

But probably needs a bit more support. Is it possibly Visentini could play in the same team as Sweet in Finlayson spot. Finlayson can also provide a bit of ruck support.

We simply won't play 2 Rucks.

Dante hasn't been tried as a forward and we won't just put him up there and hope.

It will be Ollie and Finlayson as support to Sweet or Dante.
