Player Watch Josh Daicos

Josh has been the far better AFL player not disputing that at all. But as a junior player Cal was far better that’s why he was ratted more

Not 100% accurate. They played colts together and even though Josh was injured for long periods he was clearly the more talented player in my eyes.

Cal wasn't bad at all, he was damn good and a rightful B&F winner in the 2nd colts year! I wish I was able to see the same player at the highest level but it hasn't eventuated.

Josh has blossomed. Was always a great kick BTW.

You probably had a bit to do with them through their junior days but certainly Cal was rated higher in the draft, from memory. Do you remember a kid Riley Verbi from the juniors in the same age group? I thought he was the most talented junior I had seen.

Cal put forth a much better account of himself in the junior ranks and he played more games than Josh. It's unsurprising that he was seen as more likely to make it.

Riley is playing for Doncaster these days I think. :)

My son's yearmate at Carey (a kid with a surname that escapes me, given name Bailey) was one of the best junior footballers I've seen. Silky smooth midfielder, an absolute ball magnet.

Gave up footy after a month at the Chargers. Just couldn't take the game as seriously as the other kids. It stopped being fun for him.

I at times got the same vibe from Josh. He never enjoyed his dad's fame or the expectation that the name carries; shied from it in fact.

Cal’s school footy and TAC cup was a lot stronger. Cal shined at that TAC level of hard work, Josh got drafted on talent. As Phill Heath says hard work beats talent but when talent works hard you become unbeatable and I think that’s what we are seeing now

That's fair :thumbsu: Josh did work his butt off when the penny dropped. The physical transformation alone is testament to it.

P.S: Still hoping against all hope that Cal can show the world that he can do at the AFL level what he did as a junior.

I don’t think it was about the penny dropping with Josh. He was never lazy. His first few years in the system were hampered by his asthma. His breakout season in 2020 came after he got that under control with the help of his specialist. He said as much in an interview during that year.

Agreed, Josh wasn't lazy but he did miss heaps of footy as a junior.

"Penny dropped" refers to the intent to get himself 100%. Maybe not the best term but seeking the best help for his asthma was a decision on his part. Once that was better managed he was free to work his butt off unhampered.

Would he be on a list if he had a different surname? I’m not certain.
Gap filler. Has maintained a spot in an improving Carton.
Nothing against him , but nothing says we would benefit.

Plus Cal was fit enough and could provide repeat efforts, which Daicos couldn't for a few years, until he sorted out his medical issues. Class has won out in the long run, but Brown was a better player for a while.

I’m not sure what makes you think he wasn’t trying to get himself 100% from day 1. He didn’t just decide to go to the specialist one day. He’d been seeing him for years and trying out different medications etc. Iirc he said he’d been having trouble finding the right meds since his junior days. Sometimes it takes a while to get the medication right.

Sure.

Because as a junior, it wasn't about the asthma. I'm not basing this on an interview I saw, it's what I know. To clarify once again, I agree it wasn't laziness. He did have other injuries and a different attitude to footy than Cal.

People change so perhaps once at the highest level it simply became about developing the engine and the asthma was the only hurdle he needed to get over. As you say, that endeavour might have taken years to fix. I simply don't know so I would be wrongly assuming. 🤷‍♂️

I had asthma in my childhood - pretty severely at that - it's utterly debilitating if you don't get on top of it.

A full blown attack is like having the lungs of an infant - and all clogged up with phlegm at that.

I almost died with my last series of attacks when I was 12yo - 3 full blown attacks in under 72 hours.

Even with today's medication asthma is no joke.

I’ve been asthmatic since early teens…weened off Ventolin 10 years ago…although still on daily dosage of Seretide.
I‘m not good at altitude, do not scuba, yet could/can do most other things including sports & posting BS on footy forums.

Yep the medication available now is certainly helpful - before the medication . . . well asthma killed my dad and almost got me.

Our drugs are just a wall -things like TB are making a comeback by going around that wall - so complacency is not appropriate.

My younger brother was the same until he reached the age of 13.

The RCH got to know my family well during his difficult years.

Does posting non-BS on BF cause you adverse reactions?

Glad he got through as I did but I didn't escape unscathed - in those days the treatment of last resort was a nebulizer with pure oxygen.

For those that don't know inhaling too much pure oxygen is bad for the lungs - I had 3 nebulizers of oxygen in under 72 hours and my lungs are scarred.

Better than the alternative though . . .
