Talk on the AFL website that Geelong are looking to trade their compo pick to GWS for the second pick in this years '17 yr old mini draft' where we will look to target Josh Kelly from Brighton/Sandringham.

Not sure where that would leave Caddy given that pick would seem absolutely essential in us landing him however if we could land both it would be quite a coup.

Kelly can't play until 2014 so he won't help us short term but one would assume he would have gone top 3 the following year if he was still available.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I was a bit puzzled by this one... So the gossip goes that WB would give up 5 and 6 for Martin, and we'd give up our compo for Kelly. The deal for Kelly I don't mind - not that I've ever seen him play - but 5 & 6 seems a bit of a stretch to say the least.

My guess is we would only pursue this option if the Caddy deal falls through, and even then I can't really see us pulling it off...

The mini draft won't come into our calculation unless we don't get Caddy.

We can't do it if we are after Caddy which should be our priority.

Don't really like the mini draft as an option for us anyway, but we shall see.

I read that the Dogs were giving up 5 and 6 then getting the first pick of the 17 year olds then getting pick 9 in return as part of a 3 way trade.

I too would prefer to see us chase Caddy first, but it's not bad to have a back-up plan. I'd say it's a better option than banking the pick as we can at least help him develop further.

It seems like a bizarre concept to me...the mini-draft, not us being involved in it.

I understand Jack Martin might be the clear gem of the mini-draft options, but it seems weird that picks 5 and 6 this year would be required secure him, while our compo pick (maybe #6 if the wheels fall off completely for us next year), will get us Kelly. Maybe method to the Dogs madness though; giving away picks 5/6 (and potentially some immediate help in areas of need) this year could mean that they get Martin and a top 3ish pick next year.

It is important for one to have many irons in the fire, not count one's chickens, not put all one's eggs in one basket...

Not over-do one's metaphors...

Ah, that seems a bit more reasonable - maybe I should read more carefully... I couldn't fathom how Martin could be better than say Wines and O'Rourke combined!

I actually wonder if this is why we're into McIntosh. Simpson and something (1st/2nd rounder?) for the mini draft pick, comp pick for Caddy, Rivers for free and 2nd/3rd rounder for McIntosh (really don't think he's worth much given his age and injury risk).
Makes the McIntosh interest make more sense if its to do with the mini draft pick....

Sooooo how does the mini draft work?
I am so bloody confused as to how the trade month and draft works this year!!

I'll probably get a few parts wrong, but I think the basic concept is this:

GWS can hold the rights to two players who are within a certain age group (too young for the 2012 draft, so I think it's Jan-April 1995 birthdays). The kicker though is that GWS can 't just keep these players; they have to trade them, or trade the rights to them.

So teams put their bids in for these two picks and whichever two come up with the best offer get their players and the start the year after next, as though they had been drafted in the normal way. It happened last year, with Gold Coast scoring Jaeger O'Meara, who received special permission to play in the NAB Cup game against us, despite being too young to actually be on an AFL list at the time.

I'm not convinced that Simpson has shown enough to be considered as trade bait, given he's been on the list since the 07 draft for a return of 5 games. I suspect he's going to be delisted if anything.

Not saying that wont happen but i sure the club would try and get some value for him - 5 years into a player for development is a big investment for zero return...

They may persist with him, they may try to trade him. Who will take the punt though? He is pretty injury prone and as a result his fitness is not where it should be. There comes a point where the club will cut its losses rather than keep pouring time into a guy who is just not up to it. Have we reached it? If we're really looking at McIntosh then my feeling is that we have.

I'd say that while Stephenson might have his nose in front of Dawson on the depth chart, Dawson is much safer when it comes to potential delisting targets. If we get McIntosh, I suspect we'll be saying goodbye to Orren. As LSV has mentioned, the last couple of years wouldn't have exactly pushed Simpson's trade value through the roof. He's probably more valuable to us than what we'd receive for him.

This is probably the crux of it... When you place a 28 yo player with 6 games in past 2 years and a history of breaking down in front of him what else can you draw from it....Fair point you make....

Mmmm...if it means we're out of the running for Caddy then no. But another J.Kelly at the club does sound good ;)

Just on twitter - Bottom aged Josh Kelly from Sandy runs 9mins.48secs...2nd fastest time ever recorded for Combine/Camp

He also finished top 5 in beep test and repeat sprints, and top 10 in the goalkicking test, so not bad all round.

I like this one actually. Given how well we seem to fulfill our goal of contending every year and not bottoming out, we don't get many opportunities at the top end of the draft, and this could be a way to get access to the real elite talent. And this kid looks like a gun. Great athletic results and apparently is a "classy user of the footy by foot and is that class above; not a big build yet but has a Dal Santo type feel to his game".

Sounds good to me!

Like others I suspect that this is an "either/or" with Caddy - we'll probably need the Ablett compo pick to get either deal done.

God GWS are getting a lot of help... potential top 10 picks for these players they never had. Just an extra bonus for them, on top of being a year behind GCS so will probably have more choice for their top picks in the years to come. As much as Carlton, Melbourne etc tanking hasn't paid off yet, GWS are that much crapper and will be at the bottom for another 2 years I think. That is last year, this year and another possible two years of top draft picks. Heaps more than those 'tanking' teams ever got.

Apologies for tangent.... would rather get Caddy and his extra years in the system.

I'd rather get Caddy for the compo pick.

I wonder if a deal like Simpson + one of Horlin-Smith, Guthrie or Murdoch for Mini draft pick # 2 would be a consideration? It'd give them two mature bodies that are AFL ready. Both look promising but are young enough that they could play for GWS for years to come.

Talented young kid that one Macca.

Talls always have trade value even if they haven't shown much.

I tend to agree that looking for HMac makes me think one of our rucks is moving, but for all we know it could be Simpson that wants out rather than the club wanting to shift him.
