But maybe he thought he didn't have the tank or the frame (small, congested ground) to be a starter in the Sydney game, no doubt I would have preferred if Simpson didn't spit the dummy and replace a dud in Suban for a quarter or two. But why gift games to players who haven't worked hard enough when it can destroy the fabric of our on field culture- 'work your way in and work your way out'- something Josh needs to be told again.

Except that Simpson did in fact work his way into the team. And then produced a performance which meant he should not have worked his way out of the side. I love Ross, but his mantra of "work your way in/out" has been thrown out the window for a few players. Someone like Suban should have worked their way out of the side, but instead he stays in.

Exactly. Simpson's performance as the sub was easily the best of any sub this year. Then he was dropped while spuds who have done nothing stayed in. He had every right to be pissed off.

He played well and it was harsh to drop him. Does not mean that he should have dropped his lip.

While I agree that Simpson deserved to stay in the side after his performance you don't get to behave like he did and get off scot free.
Its unfortunate. I also believe Sylvia should have been selected against Hawthorn and that turned out badly too.
But in both cases its the players poor reaction that has had the ongoing negative result.
But to some extent RTB has made himself bad cop now and can't back down.

Lyon should be ashamed he dropped him and kept that completely useless crab Suban in the side.

Part of being a coach is man management. And he kept a shit footballer in at the expense of one who had played a good game and could have reasonably expected a follow up. Yes, Simpson shouldn't have dropped his head, but at the same time the coach should know the temperament of his players and who responds to what encouragement. Omitting the guy who ended up being the sub against Sydney for Simpson would have cost the result in the Sydney game how?

This rests on the coach.
i am really, really glad you are not our coach.

Agree with the general sentiment re Simpson probably deserving of another run last week, but his tanty was entirely unacceptable.

Silver lining here could be that if that problem was always dormant in him, be it an attitude or cultural issue, best we beat the lesson into him early.

I hope Josh now understands that missing his flight has caused two losses in a row, the destruction of the team fabric and the end of life as we know it for everybody except the trolls, who appear to be flourishing.

How devastated are you that he's signed on until the end of 2017?

You just got to wonder about certain contracts sometimes

Indeed. They all crawled out of their holes after a loss.

This muppet hasn't said a thing about this issue, but had plenty of time to whinge about me quoting his crap from earlier on.

I am a dickhead.

And then sends me this when I remove it from my signature...

Hey my brother thanks for dropping the quote. Much love my bitch.

But no, he's not trolling. He's a very nice young guy apparently.

Nah, he's just another ignoramous like the others who have suddenly appeared in this thread after a loss.

The fact that Lyon didn't think he was worth a game speaks volumes about Lyon. He was excellent in the half he played and could have been used in that role again. Instead the sub role fell to that eternal dud in Suban.

Lyon's inner conservatism made that decision - not based on talent, appreciation of player sensibilities, the long term future of Freo, etc. Just a belief that the role player Suban who ticked all the KPIs was better suited to AFL football at that moment. It's a very dry way of looking at things, and it's what works for Lyon, but it's not necessarily the best way of doing things.

Settle down, his game wasn't 'excellent'. His kicking was shite for the most part. If you judge him by the standards of everyone else, he had an OK game at best, especially given he came on fresh on a bloody hot day.

Me too, but those who want to blame Simpson for this loss, what was he to do? People are forgetting that he was dropped for the Sydney game.

Had he not missed the flight and been selected for this week, he most likely would have been sub.

How does Simpson figure into this at all? Lyon did not rate him at anything above half a game as sub. Simpson may have made himself unavailable for selection, but it is highly unlikely the coach would have given him an important enough role to help win the game.

It all comes back to the coach.

He contributed more in half a game than what blokes who are best 22 do week in, week out.

Barely. You're just judging him on different standards. Which is understandable, but not in the context of team selection.

It's the context of team selection which is the problem.

North watched how to beat Freo and did it the same way, pressure the midfield, absorb the inside 50 and hit back on the rebound. You can get away with it because there are forwards inside Freo's fifty who won't hurt you.

Simpson et al won't immediately fix that but he was creative enough in the Essendon game to suggest he was worth giving another game. But with Fyfe and Mayne coming back, lesser creative players made way for better ones, while defensive role players kept their spot.

When you're two goals down in the last quarter with 10 minutes remaining, who would you rather have in your side? A defensive forward or someone with a bit more creativity?

And if we were 2 or 3 goals up? Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The thing is, if he didn't spit the dummy he'd be well in the frame for selection this week. That's AFL footy, especially for a player just starting out. There will be plenty running around for Peel today who are thinking that they are a chance for a game next week, and it's a shame Simpson isn't among them.

Well at one stage the side was up by that much, and couldn't even score then. Four goals in three quarters of football is ordinary.

Fremantle has returned two goalless quarters two weeks in a row.

Sure. I don't disagree with his club suspension but I feel this entire situation could have been avoided if good form was rewarded and ordinary form punished.

Apart from the heavyweight who pointed out that I meant KFC and not KKK none of it is worthy of being repeated.

Interesting that the hip-hop hitman has piped up for a snipe or two.

Amazing how many tears were spilt over a sig that actually revealed his true character.

But he's such a nice boy:rolleyes:

I'd back Lyon in on this instance, might of not adhered to the structures or many other reasons that no one other than anyone inside the club has any idea about. You can even take a look at a couple players who most thought should have been getting a game in previous years- Broughton and Michie and see how the've faired lately to see that Ross more often than not knows how to manage who goes in and who goes out of the team.
