Was down watching Melb & the Pies train on Sunday and saw a couple of young guys kicking and running around before the snrs started (for the pies). Notice this blonde guy with a singlet and had huge shoulders and actually moved a bit like Swan (dont know if that's a good thing) anyway when I asked someone who he was most said it was Josh Thomas who I heard about a few years ago.. well gotta say was huge, quick and looked very confident in his own skin...

Does anyone know more about him and when he is due back... looks like a good pick up for another team if he cant get a spot on your list?

He has been 1 week away for the last 6 or so weeks. He had/has foot problems, has an unusual gait between a Heath Shaw and Swan (he looks like he is power walking) and has shown signs as an inside mid. Queensland boy, but he didn't hang around for the Gold Coast draft.

Has been out all year unfortunately. Should come back after the bye.
Won't be going anywhere I wouldn't think.

Inside midfielder not unlike Nathan Foley. Has that same burst speed. Fantastic to hear he is getting stronger. Always been a very clever inside player so if he can develop a Luke Ball type frame he could with time become a dominant inside player.

Just needs to add a few more strings to his bow to break into the side at some point down the road, because right now he is competing for Luke Ball's position in the side which won't just be given to him.

Nothing to see here, move along.;)

He would have debuted for us already if not for his injuries during the past 2 seasons.

Mick mentioned him on Monday in his weekly email to members, stating he and Ben Sinclair will push for senior selection once they get a few VFL games under their belt.

He and Sinclair will both be at Collingwood next year, barring something extraordinary, as both are highly rated from within the club.

They both just need a little bit of luck with injuries.:)

Is not actually injured. That's the reason why he's been 1-2 weeks away all year, he's actually signed with GWS and Mick won't play him

Ok kidding, but it did cross my mind. ;) Thomas is one player I've been impatient about having back because he looks really good. I'm worried about the foot, but hopefully Mick is spot on and we see him get an uninterrupted run until the end of the year. I reckon the spot Fasolo got in the team would have been a toss up between the two if Thomas had been stringing games together.

Saw that too.

As far as I've been able to find out, JT hasn't played a VFL game all year? (Although I think I remember him playing NAB cup though)

Would have thought that he'd need quite a stint in the VFL before he'd be ready to debut, and with only 8 VFL rounds left, he's leaving it a bit late for 2011???

He injured his foot in the preseason and hasn't played a game all year, including the NAB Cup. During the preseason his foot was in a moon boot and it's been on a slow recovery since. Before that like others have said he was on track for senior games.

Rounds is another young player who was setback by injury. 3 guys who were pushing for selection all out early in the year, which adds to why the VFL team has been lacking.

Will play his first game next week, he has had a prick of a year. Had surgery last year too.

Hope you are Right. Hope his Injuries don't hold him back

If there is one thing we may lack depthwise in the midfield it would be some genuine inside ball winners (as opposed to more general ball winners). We have players that can get their own ball inside, but don't specialise in it, other than Ball. Plus it's always nice to add speed to the midfield.

I've always said inside midfielders with genuine pace are rare, and Thomas could find that with some good form in the VFL it is easier for him to get in the team than some others like Fasolo, whom seems to be similar to the likes of Beams, Sidebottom and co.

Josh Thomas' problem is much the same as Wellingham's was early on - He's good inside, but he doesn't get enough outside ball for a player with his pace and skill.

I'm not sure if it's a lack of workrate or game sense, but it's something he needs to work on. Obviously he can fix it though, like Wellingham did.

Between JT and Sinclair, a total of 1 VFL game combined in 2011. These guys are almost as rare as the Lach Ness Monster.

What the hell is a Lach ness monster? Also where is Lach ness and is if as deep as loch ness?

If both Benny and Josh can get a solid month of VFL football there are every chance if debuting, if as reported they are back over the next three weeks it is quite possible they'll debut.

I would have thought Josh's biggest problem is getting out on the park, whenever he doe he acquits himself very well.
Obviously, but I'd rather not fall into the all-too-common trap of glossing over a player's weaknesses and magnifying their strengths while they're out injured, which should be known on this board as the "Sean Rusling effect".

you're not really one to take the piss out of someone for poor spelling, opti

Lach ness is just asking for it

Especially when the poster is getting holier then thou about young players

Many have mentioned Josh Thomas has good pace. I can't recall that being said about him much when we drafted him. I'm aware he's no plodder.

For the VFL watchers of the games he's played, is his pace good like Wellers, Daisy or moreso one paced like a Beams etc?

Going off the footage I've seen of him last year, he wasmore in the Beams type pace category.

From what I've seen, and I watched plenty of his highlights during his time in QLD, and also saw him live a few times last year in the VFL, his pace is more akin to Sharrod's then anyone elses.

I call it "smart pace", it's not blistering like a Thomas (quickest accelerator we have IMO), in that he has good initial pace, but also reads the ball very well, especially off class ruckman, which makes him look a little quicker then normal.

The comparison when he was drafted was to Shane Crawford (being a little blonde haired ball of muscle helped;)), but that gives you some idea as to what he possesses pace wise.

A bit rich, mate. Light hearted comment about their total games this year. Hardly attacking the boys personally. I'm sure they wouldn't take offense. Best you don't either.:thumbsu:
