These are on the Melbournefc website. Number 17 has been left open but will be "brought back to life".

#1 Warnock
#5 Gysberts
#13 McKenzie
#28 Macdonald
#35 Tapscott
#37 Gawn
#44 Bail

ooo I like Gysey with 5... MacDonald suits 28... Warnock with 1 will look funny...
I wouldn't mind seeing Gawn with number 1...

Ooze old number is passed onto the ranga brawler... haha

35 for Tappy is a good fit..

9. Trengove
24. Jurrah
31. Scully

Why hasn't anyone taken 17? Is it retired out of respect for Chris Johnson?
Does anyone know why Bail switched from 41 to 44?
I also recall a few weeks back that someone here mentioned Warnock getting #1 and Gawn getting #37. Good call!

How weird is it to see Jimmy being towered over? Good fit for GAWWWWN

I'm liking Gysberts taking over Brock's number, saw it coming from a mile away though.

Really like Warnock at #1. Gives him that intimidation factor at Full Back. Mayby he's a bit of a rugby fan, with the FB wearing #1? I like it.

This could be the perfect "BS free" thread, I doubt he would be comfortable having anything to do with numbers... His maths homework has him concentrating on "2 times table"for the sixth year in a row, & still struggling with it, so feel free to post with the knowledge that he won't disturb this thread.... :thumbsu:

Next year it has to be a near certainty that the numbers 3,21 29 & 23 are going to be up for grabs... Some of those numbers carry alot of history with our club, so it will be interesting to see who puts their hand up this year with a really good performance output to deserve an upgraded number...

football numbers bore me with their meaninglessness.. the higher the number the better.. adds more character! was shattered when jurrah gave up the chance to make 48 his own.. none of this upgrading numbers!!!! keep the number your given, look at Robert Harvey. 35 is his. same will be true with gazza jnr and 29. his dad has to share no. 5 with that idiot james hird (tennis world cup pfft, idiot)

speaking of idiots! demon revival, stop name dropping me, we are not friends

Yeah, 35 a very suitable number for Tapscott when you consider that Paul Chapman wears it for Geelong.

Paul Chapman wouldnt last the quarter against Noel McMahen

Maybe you and other so called Supporters checked out some history of the MFC pertaining to the years prior to your birth

#35 Noel McMahen

Take a Look and Learn

Even the most statistically successful player in league (not just MFC) history wore that jumper after McMahen did

He changed to 16 later but the name Clyde Laidlaw means SUCCESS to me

Tough and Successful would be welcome ingredients to Tapscotts career

You have proven yourself worthy of Tool of the Week

First you say football numbers are boring

Then you say higher numbers add more character

I wouldnt have said Hird was an idiot although yeah that tennis idea he dreamed up could be deemed as idiotic

From memory the best player i have seen at Brisbane had the largest number change in history (stand to be corrected)

M Voss 56 to 3

You wouldnt have blamed the club for changing so higher number would you ?

BTW Robert Harvey wore 52 in his first season

Posting garbage does your credibility no good not that your nick provided any clue to that being fact :p

I hope you can get to Casey next Saturday BS, no I mean I really REALLY hope you can get there, I will be impressed if you actually support the club that you say you barrack for... I will see you there no doubt & your opinion of me will only be reinforced.... 2 x 3 = ????

A bit over the top.

Can I ask how Rohan Bail is your favourite player? The kid was a late draftee and has played 30 seconds of league football. Is there a particular reason you like him?

F#ck off Swampfox, I wasn't intending to disregard the MFC's heritage. Instead, I was merely linking Tapscott's approach to the game to that of another current day player.

Further, just because I'm not over 65 doesn't mean I'm not a supporter of the club.

Take your elderly elitist attitude to the local retirement village, you d1ckhead.

Aww i am embarrassed you with your own lack of knowledge and ability to comprehend my post

Your only escape was insults , quite immature and predictable that part

Jumper Numbers is tradition and has already been stated reflects a player from the past

Paul Chapman is a Geelong Player who plays in the present as you correct assert which has nothing to do with Tapscott or MFC

Your telling me because Paul Chapman wears 35 and plays what you assume similar to Tapscott this is why he gets the 35 jumper

Terrific , Cant wait to Tell Swabby about the new way of picking Jumper numbers

And you bag me ? Yeah right

You aslo assume i said you were not a supporter

wrong again

Age has nothing to do with whether your a supporter or not

I know who Ivor Warne Smith was but i never saw him play as he was retired well before i was born

Why do i know who he is

and more to the point why do i care

You have no idea how old i am as it wasnt mentioned

your only basing it on assumption

And you call me an Idiot ?

Hang on, Swampfox, you're having a go at me about using personal insults, yet you termed me a 'so called supporter.' Why don't you practice what you preach instead of talking shit?

Further, you argued that you never said I wasn't a supporter, you clearly did when you called me a so-called supporter. To use one of your favourite phrases, wrong again.

On the Chapman issue, where did I say that we should use opposition club numbering as a policy for choosing our own numbers?

Nowhere.

Once again, I reiterate that as Tapscott plays in a similar manner to Chapman, I thought it was interesting to point out that they will be playing with the same number in 2010. Nothing more or less than that. As such, perhaps you should stop drawing inferences from my posts to strengthen your argument, because it doesn't help your cause in any way.

Finally, I agree on your point about age, I was making an assumption due to the manner and attitude connected to your previous post.

There's no real reason to it. I just like late (especially if mature-aged) draftees and his first 6 minute game only added to this liking!

I am always concerned how many of our supporters know little about players from the past

Some dont even know we were once named after a flower just like Hawthorn was

Accpept my apology to the refernce you are one of those so called supporters

When a member of the team of the century is forgotten then it gets up my goat

Maybe you didnt see swabby,s article on the significance of these numbers and in this case #35

You make a fair point about understanding the past, and whilst it may be important to learn about players from another era, unless I have seen them with my own eyes, and have gained a sound knowledge of their attributes, it is pretty tough for me to compare them to the current player being handed the number. As such, I made a comparison with a modern day player I have seen quite frequently over the years.

In any case, you'll be pleased to know that I'm aware that the club was once named after a flower, and I accept your apology, whilst offering my own for the rudeness I directed towards you.

I'll also see if I can track down that article to which you referred :thumbsu:

If people are butchering each other on here it must be the off-season. Actually we were doing that during the season as well.

And if I may say I think the reason most of us under 30 (40?) don't know about the history of the club is because the club itself barely ever pushes it. It wasn't until I decided to sit down and really get into the history of the club last year that I'd even heard of some of our pre-war legends.

Would love to see a past player profile up on the website every week, and not just the easy option of Robbie Flower, Brian Dixon etc.. How about some of the more obscure but important names?

Good point, it's fairly clear that we have pushed history aside in the last 30 years or so in the push for commercialism... all that sh1te. Its good to know Schwabb is working towards bringing back the heritage, he's a true Melbourne man.

Can we stop the arguing now?:D
