For mine #1 (at any club) has cred. If you wear #1 you are a talent, someone who has earnt the right to wear it. If it falls to you, then you’re very lucky. But all clubs have number swaps in the off season, rewarding the younger, talented players with a new ‘better’ more prestigious lower number, or one they’ve requested.
Serong might not give a flying fig about changing numbers, he might be perfectly happy wearing 22, and good on him.

I don’t think to the majority of players they’re ‘just numbers’. But there are players who hang on to ‘nothing’ numbers and own them - Pav, Sandi, Johnno, Hayden, Duffield, just from Freo.

Personally I think seeing Serong running around with the #1 on his back would be awesome. Then #3 to O’Driscoll for the ‘feel good story’ to continue.

I’m pretty much tongue-in-cheek about Bewley getting 17. I didn’t mean give it to him because it’s poison and should be chucked in the bin and set on fire (that comment should suggest I’m taking the piss... well not really up until this moment in 2020). It would be great if he got it and made it his own and we could see the 17 with a 200 gamer’s name next to it. But Bewley isn’t a number 1, and if the one comment we’ve heard that 34 is going to one of the draftees, meaning Bewley gets a new number and that number is 1 - yeah, nah that feels wrong and I wouldn’t like it. But who am I in the scheme of things? No one. Am I allowed to not like it? Yes.

I believe the only sacred number at Freo is 29.
After that 8 - for our first great warrior; 26 for Clive and the fact it ended up on Kep’s back (two kings of the ‘how/why did he do that?’).
I think at the moment the only two other numbers in rarefied air are 16 and 7, with 31 next step down. I hope 10 goes to a developing Indigenous player, and the fact 18 was passed on without any fanfare is kinda sad and kinda diminished it a bit.

About jumpers. Do the chevrons on the new Burley Sekem ones look more like Vs than chevrons? They’re really deep down the front. It looks obvious in the interview with the O’Driscolls. The men’s/women’s jumpers had essentially the same design (other than the pink), but in that interview the chevrons on the men’s ones look thicker, and just bigger in general.

29 for me was the only number I wanted "retired" when the player did. Even if only for a few seasons. The others I was happy to be passed on to any draftee really. Might feel the same when Fyfe retires in 6 years after 2 more Brownlows and 4 premierships.
