R1, no.4: Ferruccio

This Zabeel gelding was formerly trained in Sydney before making the journey down to the EV Musgrove stables. Indeed, in his last Sydney run he won a midweeker over 1900m at Canterbury by three lengths. Has run third in a couple of jumps trials and sure to be well educated.

R2, no.1: March In Style

Has only been seen over the fences for the last couple of years. However, his flat form has been encouraging, and he does look to have a class edge on these. Burdened with 69Kg, but has B. Scott to counter that. Bill Wilde has been on fire lately as well.

Cheers for starting the thread. I was thinking of something similar. I am off to watch the videos of todays races. I may comment later tonight.

A couple of amazing performances today.

In the first, 20-1 shot Boltcutter won, giving Japanese riding Kosuke Kawamaki his first win, narrowly holding out the RE Laing runner How Bixaar who ran home strongly. Willie Command looked the winner until late then faded, and the Musgrove runner Ferruccio was a nice run to come third. In the second, Quilter was about six lengths ahead and almost fell at the final jump, but miraculously Craig Durden was able to stay on and record a victory over the gallant Southern Crown.

The 2007 jumps calendar can be found here: http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/images/stories/2007 Jumps Racing Calendar.pdf

Also, I plan to keep posting the fields and giving my selections over the winter, and hopefully it will inspire interest and discussion in this wonderful sport.

Coming up this week there is a 3000m highweight at Sandown on Friday (which I will also include in this thread).

Durden was amazing. He was virtually air-borne and balanced nicely afterwards.
Not much to take out of the 2nd hurdle but in the first I thought the Paddy Payne ridden one came home nicely to suggest it has some sort of future over the jumps.

Highweight race this Friday at Sandown.

At Sandown, Quilter nearly managed to back up from the other day, but Elwood was too good for him in the straight. Nice run by High Czar to get third.

Geldof for me. Came home well last time (as mentioned above) and good jockey change from P.Payne to B.Scott.

The field was decimated in the end with only 4 starters. Balmoral Burn opened up a Vo Rogue style gap - must have been 20 or 30 out in front - only to be run down late by Cheveley Kid, the favourite. Fascinating race in spite of the small field.

The jumps finally come to town this Wednesday at Sandown:

1-12.40 MOSSTROOPER HURDLE 3000 M
Of $24000 Of $24000. 1st $15600, 2nd $4800, 3rd $2400, 4th $1200. Starter Subsidy: $170 for non-prize earning runners. . Eligible riders can claim. Field Limit: 14+3 EM

5 FERRUCCIO (NZ) Eric Musgrove B Constable 1 63.5 (112)
6 HOW BIXAAR Eric Musgrove B Scott 5 63.5 (112)

Foreign Scandal's flat form has been very encouraging and he has already won a couple of hurdles in Adelaide Saturday class. Not badly weighted and with A. Trinder on should be too good for them here. If the price is right he could be the first serious bet of the season.

Nice race for this time of year.

It will be a shame when the Adelaide Cup runners hit the Jumps circuit in the next few weeks. Will bring the quality of the fields down a bit.

Interesting to see Bengreta Lad start a jumping career (from day one I always said he looks a jumping type, nice big rangy looking animal) You could have been forgiven for thinking he looked like a horse bound for the classic races, but looks arent everything!

Clearview Bay has a massive boom on him as a jumper. Craig Durden has already reserved the horse for the Oakbank carnival, when you think of the quality Durden could choose from its a pretty big wrap.

Interesting point you make about Clearview Bay, first time he went over the fences he won one of those Australia v Ireland steeplechases. The Durden booking is very significant - he would be the first choice for the E.V Musgrove stable at the very least.

In the Adelaide jumps double on the weekend, Sanders Legacy got the case at Morphettville on Saturday, and Gallic took out the Adelaide Cup. Doubt he will be pressing on to the jumps but at least half a dozen probably will.

The first steeplechase of the year is on Wednesday at Ballarat:

1-1.35 ROISEL STEEPLECHASE 3000 M
