I think the time has come to play our youngsters now for blocks of games until they tired and then rotate some else through. I am not talking about playing them for weeks on end and harming them physically or mentally scaring them but we have enough to rotate them through.

We should at least get a handle on who we keep and who we let go, looking ahead I think McCeery,Keane and MaCrae will be keepers but I would like to see Poulter,MaCinnes,Chugg,Wilson,Murphy,Bianco and the others all tried I do not think they are much worse options than we are already playing.

I was at the Gabba when we lost to Geelong and it was painful and we needed big changes well we got them and now we have to be brave and play them.

I think this is a really good article that addresses the challenges of coaching a losing team and developing a list. I think we need to make development decisions but it's critical to ensure the kids are supported by the senior players. We need to be considered and balanced.

I agree playing the kids to a point. we need to look at what our expectations were coming into the year.

personally mine are that we would be between 7-10 which would be dependent on injuries and how quickly / good the kids come on.. we lost the game we shouldn't have against Brisbane and we would be sitting at 2-3. with what was a very tough draw on paper to start the year.

we have in the meantime blooded 3 kids. Mercenary, Macrae and keene. and also given Sier a fair look in at a permanent mid position. no doubt we will still blood another 3-4 kids before the years out without necessarily missing the 8. the top 8 is still critical because so many Ex players of the AFL say that no matter how many H&A games that you play it doesn't make up for experience in a final. and given we essentially have pick 1 anyway there is no need to " tank " per say'.

You are right it is a fine article and I liked Tony Shaw as a coach he was quite an innovator, but I think we need to try some of these kids now I am not talking about playing them week in and week but a few games here and there should not destroy their confidence too much if we share the load.

I must admit I think we will get beaten more than we win but as Pagan and others said it is about the big picture and small wins within that picture.

I think I would play McCeery Keane and MaCrae most weeks now as they actually look as good as most of our other options.

Top 8 would be nice but it is not going to happen this year I think and also about tanking per say I actually think it is more akin to tanking if we keep playing the same people with the same results.

I am not talking 5 or 6 changes every week but just a slow dribble which we are doing anyway, I named the 3 players I would like kept in on a weekly basis because they will improve us (even Keane who has been hung out to dry). Do we think if we stick to the tried and tested players we are not going slide down the table which looks inevitable to me when we could just bring in a few kids, they just may surprise us and it is not good sitting on our hands.

At this stage of the season, I would be happy for Keane to get an extended run of at least 4 consecutive games. No doubt he got burnt this week, but he’ll learn from it.

We’ve given others more chances.

100%

The 2018-19 era is done.

I’m all about rd 1 2023.

In the next 18 months put blocks of games into the kids. So that by rd 1 2023 we have several 2019/2020 draftees in our line up who have already played 20-30 games

That means sacrificing a little in the short term. Having 10 players a week in our line up who have played 50 games or less

Rd 1: 8 players with 50 games or less
Rd 2: 6
Rd 3: 6
Rd 4: 6
Rd 5: 9

Find out which kids are going to be of long term value by giving them blocks of games in the seniors and cut the ones that aren’t.

Need to open up the list spots so we can be aggressive in the next couple of mid year and year end drafts

Couldn’t agree more.
IMO, play anybody deserving selection with VFL form. Don’t keep selecting seniors with inadequate output.
End of year, consider dispensing /trading anybody over 26 years of age (except for Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe).
We will crap until at least 50 games are put into the juniors. It’s only then di you understand their abilities and they feel confident enough. We will be crap until 2023.
Re-sign Bucks for another 4 years with this plan in mind OR tell him he won’t be re-newed and go stitch up Clarko for 4-5 years.
Go Pies! 👍

question is also who is Keane replacing. is he replacing Moore or Cox. i'd argue his replacing Cox allowing the positional change so we need to figure out the net gain. ( if any ) also Kelly will come in and perhaps can rotate back and forward with Moore might be the best way forwards

Nice to see we're paying Cox 550k to play in the VFL,.

Cox did not do enough at VFL Level to be Called Up

I saw a couple of snatches of the VFL and his disposal did not look as bad as we are told, certainly no worse than most of our players.
I don’t think kicking comes especially naturally to him, but from what I’ve seen and what I understand of his work ethic, Taylor Adams is a pretty good benchmark for what we should expect of Rantall’s kicking.

The absence of the VFL in 2020 was really damaging. I know a lot was written - and posted - about the impact on players’ development. But it also seems to have stifled the coaches’ willingness to play the 2-4 year developing players. It feels like we’ve stopped.

Yesterday’s VFL game, and result, was hopefully the turning point.

A Rowell next to Petraca.. Mccines Daicos Macrae.. trade in an experienced 25 yr old bull in Petraca to take over the reigns.. have Rowell develop with the other young lads.. push Pendlebury out to a wing/flank.. with De Goey and Moore up front..

That would be my dream.. and we're back in the game.

Unfortunately gimpy players usually leave for go home factor, flags or money. We have neither

Aren’t we already playing the kids?

We’ve only played five rounds and we’ve already exposed Henry, McCreery, Macrae, Ruscoe and Keane to senior footy.

Surely that’s more than has happened for many many years?

Further, some of the other candidates (eg: Murphy, Kelly) have been injured at stages.

Further, players like Quaynor, Daicos, Tyler Brown, Sier and Noble are still sub 50 game players and are still developing. They’ve been getting games.

Further, it’s only the start of season and historically kids more often play later in a footy season as they develop and have worked hard to earn their spot.

Young players need mature players around them to develop (contrast with Suns and GWS from their foundation - despite “playing the kids”, and despite those kids including a wealth of first round draftee talent - those teams were rubbish and stayed rubbish for a decade or more)

We are in full rebuild mode and we are already “playing the kids” as much as we reasonably can.
