AFL Club
Richmond
hey Crow folk , a question to settle some discussion....

Did Kane Johnson ever win All Australian selection while at Adelaide - And how well rated was he during his time at your club. Do you wish he was still there? or do you think he has stayed much the same, or gotten better while at Richmond. Honest opinions appreciated

Also, how is Jason Torney been for you guys? do you guys rate him or not really

I dont think he got all australian but not too sure.

As to how he was rated? He was a gun (just look at his finals performances) the only problem was getting him on the ground, he had a few injuries and a few off field incidents. I would love to still have him at the club as I recon they would have looked at him to be part of the leadership group at this stage of his career. He hasn't had it as easy at Richmond as he has been under a lot more pressure to perform as the "gun" recruit and hasn't had as many gun midfielders around him.

Torney has been O.K but far too injury prone, average to good performer and honest hard worker but not in the same class as Kane

No. Johnson never achieved AA selection whilst at the Crows.

How highly was he rated? I'd say that by the time of his final year with us, Johnson was considered our fourth best midfielder - behind Ricciuto, McLeod and Goodwin.

What the other guys have already said - he was a very, very good player for us. I don't think he has improved at Richmond as anyone would struggle a bit there over the last couple of years. That's no slight though as he has continued to be a very good player, and no offence but Richmond have been ordinary.

I think that he has been your best player over the last two years. Couglan was great in 2003 but was injured virtually all last season. I wish Kane was still with us, he runs hard, wins a hard ball and he has a penetrating kick. I would be surprised if he wasn't named captain.

While Adelaide's midfield is still rated, and always will be with the likes of McLeod, Ricuttio and Goodwin, I think people under-estimate the loss of both Bickley and Johnson. These guys weren't as speccy as some others but they played a key role in our success.

Don't think there is any doubt what so ever that Kane would have succeeded the Roo as captain if he had have remained.

Torney is held very highly by most of the Crow faithful but like as has been said by others injuries seem to be a curse on him ( mostly caused by his courageous acts on the field)

Kane Johnson didn't get AA selection in the 7 years he was with us.

He played in a premiership in his 25th game of senior footy........a second in his 37th game........not a bad start for a young fella. He was instrumental in getting us back into the game against the Bulldogs in the '97 PF.....and fantastic in the second half of the '98 GF.

He played 104 games out of a possible 166.....thats a 62% selection strike rate........which IMO isn't/wasn't good enough for a top line midfielder. There is no doubt he is a class act and his delivery to the forwards was Jarman-like....but my only query was the amount of games he was available for.

Johnson - 104 games out of a possible 166...thats 62%
Torney - 30 games out of a possible 46....thats 65%

sure there's a difference in class.....but not absence thru injury....in fact on that front - Torney edges ahead..... ;)

Agreed.

Excellent exponent of the 'link-man' game.

Sorely missed by all and sundry at A.F.C.

I never realized just how good Kane was with his delivery, either by hand or foot, until he'd left us. He wastes so little of the ball, compared to some of our other current players.

Bloody good player, and real skipper material IMO.

I didnt think we would miss Sugar when he left but his attack on the ball and his disposal, our club is lacking without him. Sorely missed.

Torney a good honest worker without Kanes ability.

I always rated Sugar highly. A smart footballer with fantastic vision & rarely panicked or wasted a dispoal. Certainly captaincy material.

JT has been a handy acquisition & whilst not is Sugar's class, should be in our best-22. Unfortunately of late, he has been having injury problems.

Very true.

I see some similarity with Reilly's use of the ball, so I'm hoping he can start to pick up some of the slack.

He was under rated at the crows and the fact that most probably ranked him in the top five says a lot to how good he was. He was a natural tough nut with good disposal by foot in particular.
I use to decide whether to tip the crows according to if he was playing. It would be of interest to see the win/loss ratio of when he played and when he didn't.
At richmond he does not have the same impact on a game as he did on the crows and seemed to get sucked into the short game richmond played last year. Now this may have been because he was following instructions. Richmond has been able to get him on the park more often though, maybe the lack of long kicking is good for his hamstrings.
I dont think there is a club who wouldnt welcome him with open arms.

He was included in a Victorian State of Origin squad (98 or 99?), but he did'nt play due to injury. I think if he had of played that would have helped to push his case for AA selection.

yes he was definately a gun, he was a rare mixture of true class and hard at it in and under ball getter that can win games off his own boot. he always looked like he had heaps of time and as for his injuries a lot of them were caused by the way he attacked the ball. his fearless attack on the pill was second only to mark bickley (there is none better), body on the line for the team.

We wouldn't have missed him as much if we had taken Daniel Wells!

Very good, underated player. Tigers are fortunate to have him.

Best player to ever leave our nest!

hmm I disagree - he was very important part of our midfield structure (every team needs a good receiver ;) ) But I would think the title of best player to leave may be one shaun rehn?

Yeah...accept Rehny was past it and a risk. I know Kane had his injury trouble, but he is still in his prime. Our movement into the forward line hasn't been the same since. And don't go down that receiver path....he was a hard nut!
