So Ackland has quit a finals club for the wooden spooners. Great move. Keep walking Cain, you were a pea heart this year, you'll fit well at the Blues. Frees up an extra draft pick now anyway

Serious question - why would he have walked away from the Saints? Is it purely $$$$, or is there something more to it?
Gardiner, $$$ and years.

Not really that surprising when you consider how he ended the season.

Not that I saw alot of the Saints this year, but he looked ok to me. Am I missing something here? Sounds like the Saints were keen to keep him!

I don't think you're missing anything. No doubt we wanted to keep him.

For Sugar though he knows he's competing for a spot with Gardi, Brooks, Rix & Blake, and if Kosi's fit he's always going to get a game. If he goes to Carlton he's assured of more game time, more money and more guaranteed years. No brainer for him really.

Ackland to join Blues
26 October 2006
Carlton Football Club

The Carlton Football Club has announced that Cain Ackland is set to join the Blues as the number one selection in this year's pre-season draft.

"We are delighted that Cain has agreed to join the Carlton Football Club and subject to all the AFL approvals he will officially become a Carlton player following the pre-season draft in December," said Grant Williams General Manager Football Operations.

Cain has played 41 games in his two seasons with St Kilda after previously having played 12 matches with Port Adelaide after being the number 27 selection in the 1999 National Draft.

"At 24 years of age Cain has a lot of football in front of him and we look forward to him being a part of the Carlton team for many years to come. His decision to join Carlton is a real boost to the Club particularly following the retirement of Barnaby French at the end of the season," said Carlton coach Denis Pagan.

"There is no doubt we needed a proven ruckman and in Cain we have secured a young ruckman who has already established himself at AFL level," added Denis.

The opportunity to play an important role in the rebuilding of the Carlton Football Club was important in Cain's decision to move to the Blues.

"I am excited to be joining the Carlton Football Club and believe it will provide me with a greater playing opportunity. It was a difficult decision to leave St Kilda, but Carlton has a very young playing list and will be adding some more exciting young talent in the upcoming National Draft, so I am looking forward to working together with the young players to build a successful future for the Club," Cain said.

Cain is currently on holidays and will commence pre-season training with Carlton as soon as practicable on his return.

Would you have prefered to have kept him or not JD?

Brooks is going to be a star, JD.

Don't wish him away just yet. ;)

As for Cain, I heard a rumour before the draft that he might be leaving, I didn't pay much heed to it, but now it appears to be one of the few true ones.

His statement "(I) believe it will provide me with a greater playing opportunity" might be the key here - he may have decided that his opportunities were becoming limited and sought a club even more desperate than us for a ruckman.

So I keep hearing. :)

I've seen Irishman that have taken less time to develop than this kid. But I live in hope.

I hope you are right mate! If he tried hald as hard on the ground as you do for him off it he is sure to be a star. :thumbsu:

I think it is not a bad result for Ackland to go elsewhere. If you look at it as a like for like swap with Gardiner, then we will come out miles in front.

Gardiner will get his act together, he has to, and return at least Acklands best week in week out. And I am assuming he will do it for substantially less cash.

Honestly, I was never sure whether Blake or Ackland was the better of the two. It was Ackland you guys wanted to kep more though, right? I never really saw Ackland play all that muchin the ruck and when it was, it was usually against someone like Cox or Sandilands. No mean feat for even the best ruckman.

I guess his lack of 'exposure' (from my point of viewing) would've had something to do with Thommo's way of coaching. Hopefully for his sake he'll do well at the Blues. Hopefully for you guys, Gardy will stay injury free and show us all again just how good he really can be.

We'll see I guess..

What does it cost to go to the Planetarium and have a star named after you these days? ;)

I'll be the first to admit my mistake if BB turns out to be a solid player at AFL level but I couldn't see it happening.

As for the departure of Ackland, I'm really shocked.

I don't blame him for wanting to leave. With a lucrative 3 year deal on offer it's a great opportunity for him.

He was very disappointing in 2006 and after two years at the club I'm no closer to knowing whether he has what it takes it to make it at AFL level. His size and his attitude seem to go against him.

I'd prefer him to still be at the club but what's done is done. Like Knobel two seasons ago, few of us will cry ourselves to sleep over it.

that is quite true i barrack for the saints n he has a heart of a fly, he won 201 hitouts this year the most at st.kilda but he wasnt doing enough around the ground, those hitouts would have been against crap players such as, barnaby french, he got slaughtered every time he faced Cox, Lade or Simmonds. so yes ackland, keep on walking to a club that will never go back up until a new coaching staff is appointed, knowing pagan he will choose someone like nathan djerrka as his number 1 pick...bloddy *******

In 2005, Ackland usually had a dip. Was never much of a ruckman, but you could rely on him to get his knees dirty and cover some territory. This year he was - as someone else said - pea hearted. But perhaps it was one bad season?

The "incident" over in WA where he pushed Blake made we wonder how he was perceived internally. Getting dropped for the Melbourne final plus Gardiner's arrival plus possibly not being regarded that well internally = why not try something new.

Maybe 2006 was a blip. if so, he'll be a handy pickup for the Blues. if not, well. Three years is quite a long time.

And the winner of the Trent Knobel award for 2006 goes to ...

Seriously, he was 8th in the 2005 B&F (correct me if I am incorrect). But he injured his knee last year against Collingwood and never seemed to have the same spring. He was certainly an upgrade on Trent Knobel, though.

We have Rix, and it is time to get some games into Barry Brooks.

Good to see Ackland go! This season he had no heart and was a woeful performer would deffinately love to have rix doing the backup rucking to Gardiner anyday at least rix has a red hot dip everygame. Also may be a good thing that Ackland has walked out obviousley creates a extra spot on the list to either use in the National Draft or Even In the PSD there is going to be some good talent in the PSD and i would like to see at least one pick in that used by St.Kilda and 3 or 4 in the National Draft and i think that will top off what has been a massive change at St.Kilda with the coaching staff and Birss and Gardiner arriving at the Sainters. Exciting times ahead

The reason the Saints wanted to keep Ackland, is that they know Gardi and Kosi would be lucky to play a whole season combined given their chronic injury problems. Blake is just outright terrible. The Saints now need Brooks and Rix to stand up - both have ability, and now opportunity. There our however more serious problems with the Saint's list - but I'll refrain from elaborating here. :)

Let us all in on your wisdom parrot.

I would really like to elaborate, but Chief and Fred have prevented me from discussing footy issues on the main board, that grate against the tabloid footy media orthodox, as part of Bigfooty's recent censorship policy. I'm also on a self-imposed 2 board-ban per month budget, so I'll refrain from elaborating and discussing the Saints list strengths and weaknesses. You might recall my previous detailed thread on the matter in the pre-censorship era, that turned out to be quite predictive. All I'll say, was there was more than just a better contract that attracted Ackland to the Blues. I do however think the Saints hierarchy made an excellent decision to change coach, although perhaps a little late. :)
