I really feel and always have that these 2 are our keys to winning games.

Ill start with staker, the boy can play question is where? i used to hate it when woosha used to leave him in defence and staker would match up well with someone but then give away 666237 clumsy free kicks a game which really cost the team and it just really didnt seem to work , as a forward he is too inconsistent and we cant really afford that atm plus when he does kick goals its 2 or 3 max.
It seems every time he has a good game he is either on the ball or floating around the wing , he seems to be dangerous both when he is getting a lot of the ball or when he has space to run or be in a 1 on 1, but they seem to leave him somewhere and he litterally does nothing which is a shame because he is cable of winnig matches of his own boot.
I obviously am no expert but i do feel as though staker isnt a lost cause as long as they can find where he fits best which in my opinion is fletchers role, on the ball full time.

With kerr its a lot more simple, they need to make him usefull when he gets tagged hard and cant get into the game.
With most hard nut mid's like Ablett and Mitchell they seem to have an alternative role to play when they are struggling to get into the game.
(ablett is a bad example for the fact that he doesnt struggle to get into any games)

Again im no expert but ive always thought that when Kerr goes quiet they should do a straight swap for lecca, i remember kerr being quite dangerous in attack and lecca would deffinatly be capable of playing on the ball as woosha has mentioned in the past.

Sounds pretty good to me, for short periods. They tried moving Kerr forward last night. When it happened, I thought, you beauty, Kerr will be able to crumb a heap of our long bombs, but it didn't pan out that way.

I would of sent him down back. His disposal coming out of defence would of been valuable if we could of give him some space. When he is copping a hard tag though, it is up to the likes of Lynch, Staker and his fellow on-ballers to give his opponent a block/bump.

On to Staker - I'm really not sure. The difference between is best and his worst is just to far. He's so versatile but so terribly inconsistent. I'd probably persist with him up forward or drop him in place of Kennedy.

staker is a tough won i think. i reckon his best position is in the midfield - he's proven pretty good when playing right in the middle the few times he's played there. problem with that is that while it's his best position - he's still not in the top 5 or 6 midfielders.

so where do u play him?

for me, keep using him in midfield in bursts to get his hands on the footy, then on the wing. and then see if he's trade bait at the end of the year

Look I'm going to make a tough call now.

Next year the Gold Coast will take most of the quality picks in the draft to set them up for the 2011 season.

So this year's draft is the last before the GC17 hops in and gets all the quality picks.

So I think we should cull hard to the bone at the end of the year to set us up for the future as if we struggle next year we won't be rewarded for it in the draft.

So I think at the end of the year its time to get rid of these blokes-
Fletcher, Stenglein, Rosa and Staker.

I realize what I'm saying isn't going to be popular, but long term it's in our best interests and let's face it none of the 4 are good enough against good sides.

While Kerr was forward the ball actually didn't go into our forward line. The ball was just in a giant pack in their 50 for about 5 minutes.

While Kerr might have been quiet he certainly didn't stop trying and (from what I can vaguely remember from the game) he was having a pretty hard time of it with the tag (sometimes with two on him). What I was super happy with was that he didn't lose his cool and thats a massive sign of his commitment to the team and his continuing maturity. He just needs to get a bit more help in the midfield. Either there have to be better set plays at the stoppages to give him a bit of space (blocking etc.) or the other players have just gotta step up and take the game on. Bit hard to see on tv whether the first is happening. As for the second, theres others who are slowly getting there. Lets just hope Kerr-y isn't dead by the time they get up to ripping other teams a new one if they decide to double tag him at stoppages.

Staker... as I said on another thread, while not a good performance last night, he needs to be given a decent run of games in the midfield and be told he will have until, say, round 9 to show us what he's got. Chopping him in and out of the side doesn't really give him the confidence to just stop thinking about keeping his place and just focus on getting his hands on the footy. Disappointing to not see him getting in there and giving Kerr some protection at the contest though. He's a big guy and if he's not having the direct impact by winning the ball at least get in there and give your best inside player half a chance.

I think you've got this completely arse about. This is the year you hang on to what you've got, because it will have higher effective value next year with an additional 45 places on AFL lists from next year's draft.

In the end, you have to look at what you get back for that player. If the pick you end up with is not one you'd trade yourself for an equivalent player elsewhere, then you may as well keep the player. If the '08 draft is anything to go by, very few players are going to command value for money in trade, so the plan should be to hang on to your experienced players - after all the GC can't take 45 draftees to make their original squad; they'll have to trade more than a few picks.

Kerr's been tried down back before with what would be described charitably as limited success. He's pretty much a pure midfielder. Kerr's best role if he's being tagged is to ensure that other players are completely free of opponents - ie, ensuring that it takes two taggers at least to keep him out of the game.

I'd love to see him do something forward, but it's not something I can see him succeed at.

Clarkson said Kerr is the guy that sparks the eagles... which is another way of saying that the rest of the midfielders are'nt worth worrying about and he was dead right.

Individually, players like Selwood, Rosa, Priddis, etc might have good games but they don't have that 'spark' factor that will make the difference down the stretch.

Which means, that we need Staker performing in midfield more than he needs us... because he's the only one currently that can break lines with speed and evasion.

At least until Swift and/or Masten step up, Selwood/Rosa/Priddis are no more than very good rotation players trying to do an a-grade job.

Unfortunately we haven't had a real midfielder coach in a long time and it shows. Next week will be telling i think.

i think if we're going to take a broader approach in this, drexel has hit the nail on the head in his last sentence. the lack of decent midfield coaching is the issue here. whilst i'm a fan of rosa - he isn't a midfielder... he's at best a wingman, maybe a forward flanker. but not damaging enough to play midfield (or halfback).

selwood is a tagger - i thought we'd established that... having said that - well, i think k cornes influence on the afl is grossly under rated, the way tags and dominates opponents. i love selwood, but if he's going to be treated as anything other than a tagger, he's going to have problems.

i don't like the disrespect of priddis. i think he's a really good, hard working player and on his day he can be very damaging. is poorly coached i think, and doesn't get the best of his ability.

i know it's still very early days - but masten isn't coming along as well as i thought he might. of course we shouldn't expect everyone to develop as quickly as a chris judd or a daniel rich - but i thought he'd be more of a force by now.

if we had a midfield coach, i'd be much more confident in getting some afl into swift now. as it is... well, he's probably better off getting some miles under his legs in the wafl

Well Clarkson is just lucky that our forwards weren't kicking straight or that theory would have been blown out of the water! We had more scoring shots than Hawthorn did and could have won the game with accurate kicking.

Unfortunately we haven't had a real midfielder coach in a long time and it shows. Next week will be telling i think.

So tell me again why we hired Scott Burns?

Why will next week be telling? Do you rate Freos midfield above Ports and the Bulldogs?

I disagree on Selwood much prefer him in a attacking role as a mid.

As for midfield coaching Scotty Burns is only in his first year there he will get better and more confident.

As for Masten I dont believe he is over his groin problems yet.
