Des English is the guy you are talking about there... got diagnosed with cancer.

But yeah... I dont know why Sticks isnt talked about in the same sort of tones usually reserved for Carey. Carey was a bit of an excitement machine, but when Sticks turned it on, he could single handedly destroy teams as well.

Maybe because the roos were a one man show
The blues on the other hand had braddles, williams, kouta, brown, mil hanna and it made it a little harder for sticks.
Whereas carey was more a lone hand, north had a handful of fighters and never say die attitude and carey stood out and supreme in a side with few champions.
Imagine if sticks was at north and carey at carlton, carey would get the same kudos as sticks.
If u compare stats between the two.
Sticks longest serving captain.
both have 2 premierships as captain
both 738 career goals
both have kicked double figures in a game
Sticks personal best in a grand final was 7 goals, only bettered by ablett and dermie
carey best is 4
Sticks career goals in finals
65 and better avergage than dunstall in finals must be noted. as well as carey.
4th for all times goals in finals.
He destroyed many teams when he was on song and saved us from total embarrassment in that 93 grand final.
He is and always will be as good as carey and even ron barrassi gives sticks a special mention and admits he finds it hard to believe sticks isnt in the same breath as carey.:)

I'd take Sticks over Wayne any day.

Carey never produced a 10-bag in a state of origin game.

There was a discussion on a radio show in adelaide a few weeks back on the topic, and Sticks was better on every statistical measure.

Not to mention a FAR better person.

In the video posted by ODN in the 1st page of this thread there's a brief bit of a game against the Swans at PP - after that game Paul Roos said that one quarter (the 3rd ?) by Kouta in that game was the best quarter of football he had ever seen by a player..
It was Sticks.

Round 8, 2000, Carlton v Sydney
The Blues would win by 45 points through a great spread of goal-kickers, while Kouta picked up a career-best 39 disposals, 13 marks and kicked 2 goals to earn the 3 Brownlow votes.

In particular Kouta's third quarter of 7 kick, 7 marks & 7 handballs was described by club great Steven Kernahan as "best quarter of football from a player he's ever seen".

Let me put it to u like this, If sticks had of gone to the dons along with bradley because apparantely they could have snared him, he would have been the greatest centre half forward, if not player ahead of carey.
Kernahan beat him at everything
goals even
7 or more goals carey did so 12 times.
7 or more kernahan 15 times.
longer serving captain
both 2 time premiership captains
more finals goals by kernahan/ 4th on the overall list only behind matthews, dunstall, ablett and coventry who played in regular finals.
carey has 1 more best and fairest award given he played in 15 seasons to sticks 11
and kernahan has more all australians
averaged more marks than any player in history only two players have passed a better average than sticks, both been jonathan brwon with an ave of 7.3 to kernahan ave 7.1
and the best marking player of all time based on average is riewoldt with an ave of 9 marks a game.
sticks is better than carey, he fared better with his statistics and his big hauls of goals.

Can never understand why kernahans rarely mentioned,
Why is kernahan not mentioned in the same breath, was it because he came to carlton at age 23 whereas brown, carey, hird, franklin, riewoldt and pav all came to their respective clubs at a young age of say 17/18.:(

It is because he played for Carlton. Despite managing to get 6 Carlton players selected in the AFL's Team of the Century, our players do not get the same recognition as players like Carey, Hird, Matthews, Ablett sen etc.

Jezza is one that does not get the credit that he really deserves as one of the best players to have played the game & Sticks' career is always underrated, yet there is not one player in the competition at the moment who is better than Sticks.

There isnt a player in the comp or to have played the game that has more all australians, captained more games, more goals, captained premierships, as many bags of 7 or more goals, been a best and fairest winner, all australian, captain, goalkicking award and premiership player and captain, second season as a player, first season as a captain.
All these awards by one player who had the highest average of marks per game, until brown and riewoldt.
Now compare carey, he never captained as many games, as many all australians, as many bags of 7 or more, had a higher tally of goals in a grand final.
For the players that bettered some of those stats were one dimensional players with fewer achievements than kernahan.
I would love to argue the point with north supporters on this, u blue boys have me pumped.
and given what he achieved with glenelg, some would argue it was irrelevant, but when asked about premierships and who has the most there are the other comps that were going around before it was formed afl.
sticks won the best and fairest 3 toimes, a magarey medalist, jack oatey medalist and 3 time glenelg leading goal kicker, all before he came to the blues.

Lat night was a perfect illustration of why Judd must hate playing football. I wouldn't mind betting he goes all 'Leigh Matthews' on one of these 'Neville Bruns' before too long.

It's the kind of pressure that saw Kouta in the early part of '98, i think it was, go virtually kickless and saw him moved to centre half back to get a sniff, where he resurrected, slowly, a career that was looking a bit shaky.

I reckon they could whack a harness, a buggy, a handicap, a bad barrier, an unfavourable track and a jockey on Judd and he'd still find a way to get a kick.
