Toast Kyle Cheney

Id have Cheney in the team before Doc on current form.

Cheney much better defensively (although a little slow) and Doc's footskills are constantly overrated around here.
I agree. Doc telegraphs his kicks way too often. Looks a nice kick but often pulls the trigger on a poor option. Also agree with the other poster who said he is not up to the form of last year.

Gotta remember Cheney has played a mountain of VFL and stepping up to AFL is a big change so he will take a good couple of months to adjust. He has blown up a couple of times in his AFL games and been found wanting chasing a couple of quick guys. I have also been critical that he hasnt blocked forwards getting past him and running into open goals on at least 3 occasions - one bad one against essendon. That is the one area he needs to improve on for mine - he is thickset so he needs to become a blocking defender particular with small/medium fwds he as a weight advantage over - Goo was the master. The rest of his game is pretty sound. His decision making seems to have sharpened which was also too predictable.

Cheney seems a very good body on body defender. Doesn't hurt by foot like suckers or Duryea but is better at stopping goals.

Cheney is an interesting one. He's been playing as a very undersized KPP and done okay - he's a bloody solid/strong unit. However, I'd also that once the ball hits the ground he's fairly average- lacks a bit of pace and as mentioned could use his body better in a ground level contest/defensively. As far as I can tell he also generally plays as a undersized KPD or 3rd tall at box hip - rarely locks down on the oppositions best small. He also offers little offensively (vs what we usually have down back). There's a little of the cambell browns about him - better as an undersized kpd than as a small/mid sized defender. There's not much I've seen to suggest he's going to be a good small/mid sized defender or flanker at afl level. However, goo managed to do it - just has to learn to use his strength and cutting off the angles better + get a more offensive side to his game.

With lake and stratton back plus shoey I struggle to see Cheney getting a look in. As a back up kpp I think spangher probably offers more - can play as a leading forward as well, more mobile and can play on mid sized players.

In saying all this full credit to Cheney. He's given 100% each game, probably knowing is not a long term thing, and gives his all at Box Hill every week. A true professional.

I really like Cheney - in fact, in the vote during the offseason for 'who would you like to see have a breakout season', I was the lone voice who voted for Cheney.

I think he's a real workhorse, and he's been running along on the fringes of our best 22 for a long while - so it's great to see him get a chance to prove himself. He's shown that he's got skill at VFL level, and he's been relatively unlucky with how strong our back 6 have been over the past couple of years.

If Schoey is more likely to be hitting up forward, Cheney may get more of a look in, although he will be battling against Duryea for the spot, I imagine. Duryea had a ripper year last year, but seems to be a little rusty this time around, which might be enough for Cheney to get a look in.

Good luck to the lad - he's persevered in the twos, and as someone has already said, it takes real mental strength to keep plugging away when you're in that position. He is playing for his spot in every game, so I hope for his sake that he keeps having a good run.

Goo replacement needs excellent foot skills.
Duryea has those, Cheney doesn't.
Duryea even has the disgusting misskicks that Goo had.

If Friday's game is anything to go by then that is the opposite. Cheney displayed some excellent vision and skill by foot, unfortunately Duryea did not.

His first two weeks were solid, but I thought with the addition of another tall defender (Spang), Kyle stepped up his game again.
Hopefully this trend continues when Lake/Stratton/Schoe come back in.
I have given him a bit of stick over the past couple of years, but kudos to the bloke, he has simply seen a free place in the 22 and has gone straight for it.
Keep it up Kyle!

He is clearly an above average club man, and deserves respect for his achievments.
Every game is a win in his eyes.
Yep, can't fault his attitude. Excellent one to have.

I would have Cheney any day over the week over Duryea.

Cheney goes in just as hard if not harder than Duryea without that slow decision making / horrible fumbles that Duryea seems to have.

I thought Kyle was going to be delisted at the end of last year,i personally think he has done very well this year.He must be a great club man for the club to have stuck by him for so long as a depth player. When Lake and Shoey come back he will now just have to adjust to beening on the smaller quicker players, that will be his test now.

Why? may I ask.

I think his attitude & from what has been written about him in the Box Hill threads means that he is the perfect depth player to have.

We had a few in the 70s & 80s as well.

He's a red headed Tom Murphy. He's a fill the gaps type defender. I wonder if Clarko thought he'd do such a good bloody job and he'd have to think twice about Box Hilling him when the regs become available.

Has had some huge tasks already this year and has been more than serviceable, has really stepped up and done what has been asked of him, so as the op says, kdos Kyle. Really enjoying him doing his thing. He'd probably be leading the Dee's bnf now if he never left.

There are similarities, but I think Cheney is less flaky than Murphy was for us.

Can see him keeping his spot for the remainder of the year

I saw him as a taller version of Campbell brown, but he's quickly becoming another josh Gibson

Don't underestimate his value come the business end of the season

Well, Kyle Cheney has gone very quickly from "Why is he in the team?" to "How's Brian Lake going to get his position back?"!

He's won everyone over.

He's done everything right, will be very unlucky to be left out.
