Denton makes Kyle see red

IT'S been months in the making and is still two weeks away from going to air, but chat show champion Andrew Denton and shock jock Kyle Sandilands finally faced off in the Enough Rope hot seat on Monday - and fireworks flew.
While Confidential has yet to see the interview, an audience member reported that Denton worked Sandilands into a "very hostile state'' when he drilled the radio star over the controversial caller "stunts'' he and co-host Jackie O stage on their 2DAY FM show.

In particular, Denton referred to a situation that occurred on the popular breakfast program several weeks ago, when a young listener phoned in to say he had caught his dad in a sexual act with another man.

Sandilands then took the extreme step of ringing the boy's father to confront him about his actions live on air.

While Sandilands tried to defend himself, saying his program was "an outlet'' for listeners, Denton went as far as to suggest he was "playing with people's lives'' by exposing their personal situations live on air.

Following the meticulous interview technique that has made the veteran journalist king of the craft, Denton reportedly left an angry Sandilands "stuck for words'' as he probed the FM host about the importance of taking responsibility for his actions.

Fuelling the fire, Denton also played a clip from the 2007 Logie Awards, where comedian Dave Hughes called Sandilands "a massive ********''.

Denton then asked his guest what he thought of Hughes - to which Sandilands retorted: "I hate him - the next time I see him I'm going to punch him in the throat.''

ABC insiders confirmed that Sandilands left the studios in a hurry as soon as filming had finished - which his publicist yesterday attributed to her having to board a plane to travel interstate.

"Denton always gets controversial but Kyle definitely wasn't upset or uncomfortable with the interview - he thought it was great," she said.

The fiery interview will air on the ABC on September 3.

I'm a bit fan of Denton. He is a brilliant interviewer. Sounds like he really stuck it to the tosser. Should be great viewing.

I still laugh at the Frenzal Rhomb/Jackie O incident when Kyle said he was going to get physical with them. He would get his ass kicked.

I almost wonder if this was a set up from the start by Denton, particularly in light of his feelgood interviews with Kenny & The Waifs this week.
You wouldn't get a flog like Sandilands on and then try and highlight the nicer aspects of his character, because clearly there are none...

Denton is an absolute genius, the best interviewer on the planet. Great technique by softening them up with easy questions then drills them. Phil Jamo interview was one of the best i've ever seen. Can't wait for 3rd Sep for Sandilands interview.

Sandilands is an absolute tool, isn't funny, knows fudge all about music, and is on one of the crappiest shows on television. Hopefully he moves to USA and doesn't come back, or maybe gets cancer.

Jay and the Doc aren't completely dumb, they just act that way to make for a great radio station.

God I hate Kyle Sandilands, Dave Hughes should just knock the silly c&^t out.

I always thought Dave Hughes, god bless him, was an extraordinarily annoying man, but have to giggle at the amount of piss he's pulled out of Sandilands since the Denton thing.

Kylie is sure good at making friends. Seriously, does he think he is a fighter or something? Hollow threats all over the place. He has a Derryn Hinch approach to getting his own way. Dave Hughes was too conservative in his estimation of Sandilands.

I would love to see other media promote the shit out of this band, and force Austereo to play their stuff or look pretty dumb.
