Who is the most famous team? The Lakers or the Celtics.

The Celtics have made the NBA Finals 19 times, winning 16.
The Lakers have made the NBA Finals 26 times, winning 13

I consider the Lakers to be the pre-eminent team, because they are better known in the modern era than the Celts, have also made the playoffs more often than them, and won more games. Over the 53 years in the NBA, they have only had 11 losing seasons, compared to 16 for Boston. The Lakers, having made the NBA Finals 26 times, make it once every two years on average which is remarkable.

The Lakers have always had a winning traditon that has been maintained. The Celtics havn't been able to retain their mystique to the same extent. They have been in the doldrums for a while now, although are making a run at the Eastern Conference title this season.

Both have had many hall of famers (28 to the Celtics, not sure how many to the Lakers.)

I think the Lakers are slightly the more storied franchise. Part of this IMHO, is because they have made the NBA Finals more often, often losing to the Celtics ironically, but their name is always "there," as opposed to not making it at all.

The last two years, have also contributed, as the Shaq era will no doubt be a well known period in NBA history.

So, who is it in your opinion? The Lakers or the Celtics?

i'd say the lakers...

they were in a kinda sh1thole period for a while (missed playoffs) with the other LA team having a better record... tho, they've rebuilt alot quicker and been far more successful than the celtics..

No doubt the LA Lakers. They have always kept there winning culture about them, only ever spend 2 or 3 years out of the picture before resurfacing to challenge. The Celts after being so successful in the 80's seemed to take the 90's off :D Still they are back again behind Peirce and Walker but the Lakers for mine.

But were talking famous teams...do you get any more famous than the Chicago Bulls?

The Celtics dominated the late 50s - early 60s, and the 80s. The Lakers also in those years have still been a good force, and would probably have a better team of the golden jubilee than the Celtics would have. All up the Lakers have won it more times than the Celtics, and because of this I will have to go with the Lakers.

I think you can get more famous than the Chicago Bulls - namely the Lakers and Celtics :D

IMHO, I think Jordan himself was more famous than the team he played for. And with his re-surfacing for the Wizards, we can see, that the name "Jordan" transcends the team he plays for once again.

That is why HE (Jordan) will be remembered forever. As for the Bulls? :o Where are they now? I don't think the Bulls' fame transcends era's like the Lakers and Celtics. The Bulls fame revolved around an individual, who was more famous than the team.

Even though the Lakers have won more games, been confernence champions 7 more times, and made the NBA Finals 26 times out of 53?

Their efforts in winning 11 out of 13 in the early days of the league are good enough for me

Dont mix fame with success....again. Two very different things.

Most succesful - there are no arguments - records speak for themselves and you cant argue that.

As for most famous, thats arguable. Lakers, Celtics and Bulls could lay claim to being most famous. Im tempted to say the Bulls as there is no doubt they were the most well known basketball team during the Jordan era. Now im not so sure...but they could still be the most well known.

You could be right, Macca.

But I daresay the Bulls, whilst famous, were not as famous as Michael Jordan himself. The Bulls seem to be a forgotten team nowadays.

When the Lakers were struggling, there still seemed to be a lot of people still supporting them, here in Australia.

then Collingwood must be a better team than Essendon because:
Theyve won more games
Essendon has won the premiership 16 times, runner up 14 times
Collingwood have won the premiership 13 times, runner up 23 times

define what you mean by 'most famous' cos your certainly confusing the hell outta me here. Youve said Lakers are most famous first of all cos they are more succesful overall, and now because they have more support.

Most famous would be more people know about them, they are feared by more people, and more people know their "story".

Its too hard to say...its only guess work. Lakers and Celtics have been more famous for longer than the Bulls...but the Bulls definatly were THE team in the 90s.

It's 14 to the Magpies actually.

Yes, you could make a valid claim about Collingwood being the most successful, that's for sure. I don't have a problem admitting that.

I mean the most well-known team, which I believe is the Lakers. I didn't say they had the most support. I said that they continued to have support during their "down" periods, form an observational point of view anyway. The Bulls seem to be a forgotten team at the present time.

You're right - it's guess work. Still, the Lakers for mine.

P.S. I support the Portland Trailblazers

Portland!!!!!! Portland are cool....im Orlando myself

Well i think the most Famous teams comes down to LA v Chicago. The Celtics are the most successful but i dont think there that famous. Boston being a smaller city, more blue collar rather than the razle and dazzle of the Showtime Lakers and of course the dominance of MJ.

Prolly LA by a whisker followed by Chicago and then the Celts..

If you are talking about fame, them maybe the Knickerbockers should be included in this argument. Surely any team that comes out of New York and has had a modacum of success, will be well known. Maybe the Knicks are better known for the people you see courtside, but it still adds to the fame and mystic of the ball club.

Anyway, I maybe biased, but I believe the Lakers are the most well known Franchise in Basketball. Their incredible success over 50 years has only added to the mystic of the club. They have only missed the playoffs 4 times in 50 years. Incredible.

Second I would have to say Chicago. Only because Boston hasn't had an success in the last decade. There last time Boston played in the finals was in 1985-86, but this may change with Boston a possiblility of playing the Lakers in the Finals. Boston has the grandeur history, but Chicago's history is more recent.

Good call. Totally forgot about the Knicks, i think it really comes down to the Bulls, Lakers, Celtics and Knicks..take you pick really. Devo i doubt though that a return to the NBA Finals is on the cards just yet for the Celtics...

They currently have the second best record in the East. Are you telling me that's a fluke. I think the East is so poor this year, that even New Jersey can make the Finals.

I agree that almost anyone could come out of the East and end up in the finals but i just doubt that Boston will be that team. Rely way too much on 2 guys....and not just for there scoring, Peirce and Walker do everything. Shoot the three, pass, rebound, block shots, steal....if Boston got just a couple of guys to help out more then they would be a shot.

Gee, sounds a bit like the team leading the West don't you think???

Very much so....this is why i continue to say that the Lakers will be beaten this year. Sacramento, Dallas and San Antonio are all teams rather than a 1 2 show...I dont expect Boston or the Lakers to be in the Finals this year.

I reckon, your hoping more than expecting. Sacremento, Dallas and San Antonio are very good and deep teams, but I don't think they have the talent to beat the Lakers in a seven game series. Come finals time, the Lakers should be a well oiled machine with every player knowing their role. I personally think they are little deeper than you give them credit for. They don't have a third superstar, but Fisher is a very good role player, and their other players like Hunter, Walker, Mendenko and Shaw have all shown improvement as the season has progressed.

Looking at the East I'm beginning to lean towards a Lakers/ Nets or Lakers/Celtics final. I still have the Bucks as my favourite at this stage, but Boston and New Jersey have shown enough team work and commitment to suggest they have a better than average chance of being sweeped in the finals.
