I thought I'd get my Phantom drafting out there, just prior to the real thing, just for fun.

First the disclaimer: I haven't seen any of these players play live. You're unlikely to get any great new insights here!

I've taken the approach of making a power rankings based on the mathematical mean positions of the latest November rankings done by Knightmare, Lemming Master, Gary Buckernara, Cal Twomey and AFL Drafting Central. Between them they've ranked about 80 players and using some mathematical rules I've combined their lists into one and then based my drafting on that.

Since this has largely been a mathematical exercise, and I don't have any of my own insights into the players to offer, I've not put the reasons beside each pick. My picks are heavily based on the power rankings, which is heavily based on the expertise of those who know what they're talking about. I expect this method will throw up some silly picks for certain clubs, but that's been my approach anyway.

Having said all that, I've tried to take into account each clubs previous picks and have tried to apply some sort of strategy to get each the best harvest. For example, St Kilda are building and have a single early pick and then much later picks - so I've favoured a pick best available first then pick the best available mature age players, in the hope of getting better value later.

No Doubt I've made mistakes, this was a lot more difficult and time consuming than I'd anticipated!

The Draft:

1 Carlton Sam Walsh

2 Gold Coast Jack Lukosius

3 Gold Coast Izak Rankine

4 St Kilda Max King

5 Sydney Nick Blakey (NSW - Sydney Academy) Sydney gives up picks 26, 33 and 38, gains picks 5 & 52

6 Port Adelaide Jackson Hately
I've gone against the power rankings based on PA favouring local and Hately having been so good in the SANFL.

7 Gold Coast Bailey Smith

8 Western Bulldogs Ben King

9 Adelaide Connor Rozee

10 Greater Western Sydney Jye Caldwell

11 Port Adelaide Riley Collier-Dawkins

12 Greater Western Sydney Jordan Clark

13 Geelong Zak Butters

14 Adelaide Chayce Jones

15 North Melbourne Tarryn Thomas (North Melbourne Academy)
North Melbourne gives up pick 40 (originally 42), 45 (originally 47) & 46 (originally 48) and gains picks 15 & 55

16 Western Bulldogs Rhylee West (VIC - Western Bulldogs father-son) Western Bulldogs giveup picks 28 (originally 27) & 33 (originally 32) and gain picks 16 & 43

17 Fremantle Liam Stocker

18 Port Adelaide Xavier Duursma

19 Adelaide Luke Valente

20 Richmond Sam Sturt

21 Brisbane Lions Connor McFadyen
I might have stuffed up here, Brisbane would probably be better off waiting for a bid and so getting the benefit of the discount.

22 Greater Western Sydney Ian Hill

23 Collingwood Isaac Quaynor (Collingwood Academy)
Collingwood gives up pick 39 (originally 41) and pick 41 (originally 44) and gains pick 23 and pick 53

24 West Coast Curtis Taylor

25 Adelaide Jez McLennan

26 West Coast Xavier O’Halloran

27 Melbourne Ned McHenry

28 Greater Western Sydney Kieran Briggs (GWS Academy)
GWS gives up pick 29 and gains picks 28 and 58

29 Gold Coast Bailey Williams
Could he end up being an intercepting Key Defender?

30 Melbourne Ely Smith

31 Gold Coast Marty Hore

32 Brisbane Lions Sydney Stack

33 Fremantle Luke Foley

34 Collingwood Will Kelly
Collingwood gives up picks 53 & 54 and gains picks 34 & 64

No way Port moved up that high just to take Hately.

  • You have Dogs taking 6 players when we only have 5 slots available (after our 2 rookie upgrades)
  • You have us straight up drafting Khamis at pick 45 when he's an academy player. We would be drafting best available option here, then just matching a bid later

Yes I thought I might have made some mistakes like this. I found it difficult to tell how many picks each team would take - the rules seem to allow some flexibility.
I think I made the same mistake regarding Khamis at pick 21 with Brisbane's academy pick.
Perhaps I'll try again next year, but give myself a little more time!

Still great effort on putting the whole thing together - it's an enormous effort and there is ALWAYS going to be something you miss :)
