Heard some interesting info last night regarding development work at Princes Park.

Apparently it's all going brilliantly but in a few months time will come to a screaming halt - it seems the AFL are in cohorts with our club regarding the venue and are quite keen on developing PP for use as Melbourne's 3rd stadium....if my source is correct then there will only be some of the older stands demolished, reconstructed and newer stands will be upgraded and beefed up to hold ~40,000 fans.

This doesn't quite make sense to me considering PP's history with not being able to draw massive crowds, people from other side of town, etc. but I was informed this stadium's main use will be targetted at interstate teams playing in Vic....as opposed to having smaller crowds at Telstra or MCG.

This may be a great thing for Carlton and the facility in general because if it eventuates the AFL will be shelling out mega bucks to get it right....

Anyhow - just passing on what I heard

So long as we make obscene amounts of money out of it to the point where we can buy and sell other clubs at our whim, I'm fine with whatever happens.

+1 :D

i had thought about this when vlad said the afl where thinking of a 3rd melbourne stadium re the pp development.

Would love to go back to pp!

They connived to get us out, said we could never play again, left us with a white elephant stand, we had to find a way of making money from the place, we spend dollars on design, start construction, and they say 'wait, we may have been premature.'

Ah well, I wish this could happen. It would be great. I know we wouldn't necessarily be fixtured there but just having it recommissioned means that we are a chance of having a game or so every navy blue moon.

It would please us greatly, therefore it will not happen.

As long as the AFL kick is some dollars on their own, because the Gardiner and Pratt Stands are looking pretty tired, and are in desperate need of a makeover. Would be great to have AFL footy played again at PP, and why wouldn't the AFL want to use the ground. Seems like a win/win for both parties.

I'd love for games to be played at Princes Park again, so long as they replace that damn scoreboard!

It's sh*t! :p

oh come on

u didn like the ole ole ole ole feeling hot hot hot theme they put on??

The "FEVVVVVVV!" running diagonally across it was brilliant. :D

It'd be great for games to be played there again - not the best ground for watching football, but what's better than sitting amongst 35,000 screaming Carlton fans as we smash the opposition into the grounds?

Still though, if it were to happen (a size 7 if), what would happen to our state of the art training facility soon to built?

Word is that the AFL will be major financer although share your sentiments on previously leaving us in the shi-t.

Know Carlton are keen to look at it particularly as it would prove an "advantaged" option to a certain number of Interstate games that would've been played at Telstra.....

it makes sense for PP to become the 3rd ground for afl matches.

carlton as a club need to make sure we are not bent over in any deals with the AFL.

requirements-

afl kicks in money
afl allow us to get out of our TD handcuffs
carlton retain ownership
use of the ground is managed around carlton's needs/schedule (ie. training. practice matches)
we are given a re match v melbourne at PP to right the horrible wrong of 21 May 2005

and a multi story car park within the vacinity of the ground.

So it seem as though since this discussion:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=471556&highlight=boutique+stadium

we now have confirmation that the AFL do like PP as the 3rd Melbourne venue and are talking to Carlton about design modifications to make it all happen.

I'd love to play some home games there, but I get the feeling by the time it's ready the crowds that Carlton will be attracting to games would not be able to fit.

I also hope the AFL don't cause too many delays, no reason to make our boys wait any longer for modern training facilities, we are languishing behind the masses already bigtime.

I also hope the AFL pay the club's holding costs on a ~$20M development for a few months while they make up their mind -bloody expensive thinking time

That would be amazing if it were to happen! Imagine going back to Princes Park to go watch Carlton again...that first game back...that home feeling.

It makes me all warm inside ;):o

"Gee Sandy, I'm just starting to see a glimmer of a theme brewing here."

"Let's hope not, Bruce. Old people are people too - as you well know."

"Well, we can debate that till the cows come home, when we come back. You're watching the Games of the 37th Olympiad exclusive to Channel 77 live from The DustBowl, Mawson Station, Antarctica."

"....peanuts, peanuts, peanuts...."

Do we think the peanut man will make a return? Or has he retired on the undeclared millions he made from 10 years of Saturday and Sunday afternoon peanuts sales...

It is not going to happen. Carlton or any of the other 15(soon 17) clubs will not play any home & away matches at PP again.

I love the idea of returning there, but sadly its just not true.
