Now I know alot of you guys aren't into the flying the flag stuff but with the ongoing next captain debate i think it's interesting to look into something ...

I was just watcing the Port Vs. Crows Semi Final and do you guys remember when Biglands was king hit by Pickett? The players who went in and stuck up for Biglands IMO gives a real indication of who are the Crows real captain candidates, the first players in there were Edwards and Thommo but soon Goody, Roo, Truck and Hart were all in there giving it to Byron.

Interesting to note that of all of our young players it was everyone's two favourite captaincy candidates who were in there for their teammate? Do you guys think this strengthens Thomo and Truck's captaincy claims?

Edit: Also Bocky, Shirley and Basset were in there.

Just out of interest if anyone was wondering what big tough Tredera was doing at the time he was starting crap with

Hadyn Skipworth!:D

Obviously a tough guy!:p

the captain has a friendly chat. No port players willing standing up yet.

Dont know about the whole captain/first in the fight thing either jo172, its good to have that aggression and for instance it was completely right at the time. Same thing should of happened with the carey v archer game(s). But other times when the game is on it aint.

Didnt the truck just take warren apart that night. Was awesome to watch. The faces on the power supporters is something I will never forget but I am sure they will be out for revenge. Bring it on.

Is the semi final available on DVD? If so is it available on the internet?

Yes, it was great to watch, especially when you take into account their pre-match arrogance. Did you see the look on Rucci after the game? He looked more pale and sickly than normal. Very funny.

Tredrea was actually high in Port's best players that night. Being the best out of a bad bunch however is not saying much.
Your midfield absolutely slaughtered our midfield. That combined with what was perhaps not one of Williams' finest hours meant Tredrea came out looking worse than he should have.

What I love best about the little push and shove that night was that absolutely no power players went anywhere near Rutten. :D He spent time just removing the crows players or standing in the way of the power players.

*PAF - Tredrea on 5aa that week after the game did admit that he had a good game as he only kept Rutten to one goal. (Although he did admit that was in an email that a mate sent to him after the game) ;)

Good on him for showing a bit of humor. :D
Unfortunately that was the sort of game that as a losing team you just have to say it happened now let's forget about it and not overanalyze it.

This says it all really. Of the players that "rated" 70 or better (from the link I provided), our only midfielders are the 2 “negating” ones and even then only just got in, compared to 5 of yours that got 75 or better.

Brett Burton 101
Simon Goodwin 94
Tyson Edwards 86
Scott Welsh 86
Nathan Bassett 78
Mark Ricciuto 77
Andrew McLeod 77
Scott Thompson 71
Jason Torney 71
Trent Hentschel 70

Dean Brogan 101
Chad Cornes 98
Warren Tredrea 74
Domenic Cassisi 71
Kane Cornes 70

Yes apparently rather than Biglands initiating the contact and then winding up gasping for breath after being bumped by a guy half his size what really happened was that Choppy ran up behind him and punched him!

By the way has anyone noticed how unconcerned Pickett looks at the attention from these Crows players? He's almost laughing at Shirley, Ricciuto meh.

I think what Choppy did was galvanise the Port team and for about the only time in the game we played with passion from then up to half time.

Pfffftttt!!

Port will be a far better team without that perennial distraction in it.

You must be disappointed with his fall from grace?? Who will play with passion now??

Alright I'll try to be clearer for you! :) After Byron embarrassed Biglands the temperature in the contest rose. Port for the remainder of that quarter played with passion that we didn't see during the rest of the game.

To say that Pickett was a perennial distraction is to ignore his Norm Smith medal and a large number of top notch games for our club. Sadly that form was rarely seen in 2005 and perhaps it's better for both parties that he's now at Melbourne because he may not have got back to his best had he stayed at Port.

I would feel safe to safe Port without Byron wouldn't have won the flag

And I wont be suprised if he wins another (NS) with Melbourne

Thats because he knew they wouldnt hit him. They were there to play football after all, not to take cheap shots at unsuspecting players with their heads down or backs turned.

Before you write it, I know that incident wasnt Picketts fault and Biglands definately initiated the contact, and probably got his just reward. However its the only time I can recall Pickett hitting a bloke who had a chance to see him coming, he usualy waits until their in a vulnerable, defenseless position over the ball.

I should have qualified it a bit Tootsie by saying that in 2005 he was a perennial distraction to Port Adelaide - a negative to the whole team rather than an asset, which is probably a reflection of the huge self-inflicted off-field problems in his life.

Yes, he had a moment of glory in that final, but it was a fleeting moment in the context of the game and it's result. As for his game itself I thought a rating of 25% was overly generous for an almost complete non- contributor.

I stick to my earlier comment that Port Adelaide are the better for his departure.

Let's just settle for Byron Pickett had a very forgetful year in 2005 and the club could not possibly offer him anywhere near what he apparently demanded.
How's that for diplomacy? :p

But that's apparently pretty close to the mark. For Port not to offer him a reduced contract with a performance based clause in it would have sent all the wrong signals. I think had Byron accepted the offer it would have signalled a commitment to improve his performance. The fact he did not means that it was best he move on. I certainly wish him all the best at Melbourne. He's given me some special football memories.

And still got thrashed. I'd hate to think how badly they would have lost if they didn't play with 'passion'.

Port did look the better after that incident. Without having seen a replay of the match, from memory the Crows gave away 2-3 silly free kicks for the remainder of the quarter and Port kicked a goal and looked to be getting on top. I went in confident that we were well in the game. Obviously the Crows regrouped at half time and showed us how to play football from then on.

No matter what happened, Byron was finished at Port. In my opinion, he would have never played another match winning match for Port Adelaide again. It was the best time for both parties to go in seperate directions. Wouldnt surprise me if he kicks 40 goals this year and wins Melbourne a final.
