Actually can’t believe how far they’ve fallen. Genuinely thought they were too big to fail.
Fitting conversation given today was the day in 2011 Fergie beat Arsenal 8-2.
De Gea; Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra; Nani, Cleverley, Anderson, Young; Rooney, Welbeck.

Today they can't get past league 2 opposition.

The Magic of the Cup™️

Sad to see fans getting in Mbuemo’s face like that, no need for it at all.

To be fair that's quality from Bruno.

Back in the day Fergie had a terrible run as manager . In the 88/89 and 89/90 seasons they were just as bad as they are now . Fergie was close to the sack but ended up winning the 1990 FA cup .
That saved him and the rest is history .

No manager is going to get 3 or 4 seasons to get a team going like Fergie was given.

Came second to Liverpool 87/88 with 81 points. Bought some time.

Fielding an ineligible player should be a DSQ.

Ehhh nice to see common sense prevail. Registering a player 1 minute past the deadline, the day before a fixture, shouldn’t be a DSQ for me. The fine is a reminder to do it on time, that feels sufficient.

Harsh for 20k though on a club that could make or break them

Seems harsh, a fine should be enough.

Rules are rules. what's the point in rules if breaking them doesn't matter?

I understand that the EFL is following precedent here and that's fine. Grimsby are being treated in accordance with other clubs transgressions.

I am advocating for ineligible players to warrant the forfeiture of the tie. I am saying I think the sanctions should be changed.

It's about time football stops handing out lame penalties that clubs don't care about. No more clubs gaining benefit, or even silverware from breaking financial rules. No more PSR loopholes via dodgy related sales, purchases or transfers.

It's broken windows theory. If you don't adequately (or at all) punish small mistakes then clubs will be emboldened to break bigger rules.

The punishment has to fit the crime too, feels like you want to throw someone in jail for being 5kms over the speed limit.

Not at all.

To continue the metaphor. Speeding a tad over the limit and hitting a pedestrian is bad. Breaking hard but still just hitting the little old lady is still culpable driving for exceeding the limit and hitting someone.

Thats why the penalty for culpable driving is severe but the penalty for speeding is less so. You're not getting any closer to winning this discussion.

You're picking such a weird hill to die on. Why do you care so much?

I think it got handled consistently and correctly.
I acknowledged it was consistent. Just don't agree with the severity.

Footy wipes scores for 1 player too many. Golf DSQ for 1 hole incorrectly marked. F1 DSQ for driver being underweight. I like sport having tough penalties, it keeps everyone honest.

Meanwhile 4 years on and still no closer with MC charges. Clubs sell to themselves, swap trash academy players for FFP hits, and virtually no one is stripped of silverware gained by breaking rules.

At least you can debate in good faith unlike the condescending the blow in from the a-league sub-board losers lounge.

When you lose an argument, you lose it hard now don't you?

The only condescension is yours and the only loser in this argument is the person who played the man and not the ball.

Grimsby probably have plenty of part time admin staff, it's an easy error to make.

There was no advantage from it or any attempt to gain an advantage.

20k is a big whack for them too. Right decision made for me..

It's £10k, with the remaining £10k suspended until the end of the season. It's not going to bankrupt them but it's enough of a deterrent for League 2 clubs not to break the rules.

In this case it was a minor breach. He was registered one minute and 59 seconds after the deadline. When they realised they self-reported. The player only came on for the last few minutes of the game - then United scored two goals. He missed his penalty in the shootout.

They might've wished that someone stopped them from playing him.

Good point. When the player was registered with the EFL a few minutes after the deadline and was entered on the team sheet surely the EFL should be picking that up. Or a simple email to the club saying this player isn't eligible until the next round of the cup.
