hey guys.. i was wondering if any1 went to the legends game today.. if so, can u tell me how it went.. hoo won, the good players..BOG hopefuly dunstall, Thanx.

Dunstall barely played cos of his knees.

BOG was Paul Hudson with 7 goals for the Mayblooms and Greg Madigan for the Hawks. (they had 2 trophies)

Mayblooms got up with Langers accepting the cup.

'Legends' such as Adrian Cox, David Loats, Tim Hazell, Chris Obst and Aaron Lord were on show.

Tucky just disappeared after half time. He looked buggered out there, haha. Saw Big Max Bailey and Trav Tuck in the quarter time huddle laughing at him.

Chris Langford could be in our best 22 still, he looks in magnificent shape, even if his hair is grey..

Dunstalls diving chest mark brought back memories..

Hudson handballed it

Platten was just constantly abused by Derm on the mic, i reckon he'll kill Derm tonight..

Paul Dear is massive, just huge.

Good Day, a couple of decent chicks, and a good crowd...

it was a good way to end 100 years there and goodluck to you guys down at waverly park:thumbsu:
Thanks mate :thumbsu:

It's a little sad really, I've only been down there a handful of times (usually when I make my annual trip to Melbourne) but my lasting memory was having kick to kick with the 'Big Fish' after a training session in 1997,1998?

I couldn't imagine how it would be for those that have celebrated many a win in the social club after a game! Listening to some of the memories on HHQ; Jnicolas, whister, fishman etc, it's obvious how much the ground mean't to them and how tough it will be for them at the moment.

I'm just over the moon about winning a game against your mob, it seems like it has been ages since we beat you guys (2002?) :p

Anyway thanks for the kind words, while there is alot of crap posted on these boards by both Hawk and Tiger posters alike, our games are always close and often eventful contests, they are games I often look to with excitement when the fixture comes out for the up coming season :thumbsu:

You have to come to grips with change. We're all very nostalgic about this place, but let's face it – it is no longer up to scratch for an AFL club," he said.
:(

I find it sad that the venues that made our game what it is today are being grossly under used, especially the grounds which contain so much culture, tradition and memories; Punt Road, Glenferrie, Victoria Park even the Whitten Oval were venues that contained there own unique culture and added another deminsion to the whole 'going out to the football' experience.

I know you are not a Hawker, so I'd almost let this slip, but I'm reaaaaaaal fussy about this.

It's Glenferrie and Waverley. Ta. :)

Hawks gather for farewell
By Martin Blake
March 3, 2006
One last time they made the pilgrimage, about 5000 or so of the faithful Hawks, to say a fond farewell to Glenferrie Oval last night.

One last time they remembered that there is no parking in the vicinity, and one last time they realised that the ground is - or has become - a cow paddock, all the grass having burned off over the summer.

One glance at the suburban oval would have been enough to convince them that the move to Waverley Park was necessary.

Hawthorn trained for the last time at its spiritual home, Glenferrie Oval, and then the modern-day gladiators made way for the broken-down veterans in a legends' game, played between the Hawks and the Mayblooms under the captaincy of John "the Rat" Platten and Chris "Chinny" Langford.

Only in Australian football could such an occasion be turned into a fund-raiser, for even yesterday a clique of angry fans was meeting president Jeff Kennett and demanding an extraordinary meeting to stop the sale of the adjacent social club.

But fans paid up to $12 to watch the old-timers sweat under a 30-degree sun, and listen to the unique commentary style of Dermott Brereton, who could not play because he is recuperating from knee surgery.

When Rayden Tallis gathered the ball at half-back on one occasion, Brereton observed that this was "just about where I stood on his head".

Platten, who scarcely changed off the ball in a decade as a rover in his heyday, actually trotted off to the bench for a spell in the contemporary way of midfielders.

Don Scott was listed to play but did not, admitting that he had discovered "a few brains". Scott, the rebel-rousing former president, is dead against the board's move. "The soul's been ripped out of the place," he said. "They've sold the social club and now they're moving from here. I believe there should be a presence here."

Michael Tuck was there, too, his body fat still wavering roughly between zero and that of a greyhound. When Tuck complained at quarter-time that he had not gathered a statistic, coach Peter Schwab - now there's another irony - instructed his players to find the former captain. "Wherever Tucky is, get it to him."

Andy Gowers twanged the first hamstring, and was helped around the boundary by Jason Dunstall. Coach David Parkin revealed the secret strategy employed, which amounted to this: 35s and over spread out; under-35s to the midfield.

Train drivers got into the spirit of things, honking their horns as they rattled past the ground.

The mood was festive, although there is some sadness, too. Parkin summed it up: "There are a lot of people, and I'm one of them, who've made an emotional investment in this place. But if we're going to survive for my children and their children we've got to make some difficult decisions. There'll be angst and disappointment.

"But I'd rather be viable somewhere than out of existence here. I understand why the decision had to be made."

And so it ends at Glenferrie. It died slowly, lingering since 1973. But a new day has dawned. With the end comes a certain sadness. With the new comes hope and optimism. Can you be happy-sad?

Sorry to disagree JR, but last night was a very poor end to Glenferrie. It was expensive, and the crowd for such an event was half of what it should have been. There was no atmosphere and most of the people there looked like they had been called the night before as they didn't know what they were doing.

I was at the huddles and even the players didn't look happy to be there.

This should have been a much better staged event. The HFC deserved much better than what was served up to us. Where was the theatre ? Where was a mock spray from Parko, or Schwaby.

I'm glad I lived through the, and remember what the 70s & 80s were really like, because anyone who came long last night would get the wrong impression of what our history really was.

Lastly, where were the current players ? They clapped the oldies on and then nicked off with "brut under their armpits and Monaros in the car park".

Last night confirmed that I used to be part of the "Family Club", but now am just a member of the "Extended Family Club".
