Why not I'm part Danish from my fathers and Scottish from my Mothers.

Couldn't he be part Aboriginal if one parent was Aboriginal?
Its that aboriginal say you either are aboriginal or you arnt no in between.

I couldnt give a rats if a player was green from Mars.

If he plays good footy and more importantly, if he plays good footy for Collingwood, then I'm happy.

It is fair to say, that leon is starting to fulfill the potential I have seen for some 8 years. I still remember that hanger he took in 2001 on Anzac day in the forward pocket at the city end. I said he could play after seeing that grab, but it was always whether he wanted to commit or not that was the issue. He is turning it on now and I wouldnt trade him for anyone at the minute. I think he is going to be potentially a better player than even Didak

You can't be part aboriginal .

Rubbish, it's simple genetics. They also say Barack Obama is black, but his mother was white. Doesn't that make him just as white as he is black? sorry this should probably be in the NFR forums :o

PS: Well done Leon!

"Being Aboriginal" consists of more than just having the blood of the Aboriginal people in your heritage.

It involves identifying as being Aboriginal and making roads to being accepted within the Aboriginal community, as far as I know.

Likewise with Barack Obama - He identifies himself as African-American, which he is, and as such, one could say he is "black".

I can definitely understand that having one Aboriginal parent doesn't make you "part"-Aboriginal.

I'm Australian from Scottish-Irish background on my mum's side and Greek on my dad's. I don't consider myself part anything. I'm 100% Australian and 100% Greek. That's how I identify myself and that's how the respective communities here and overseas identify me - so that's who I am.

Race actually has little relationship with DNA or even skin colour/appearance. Race is cultural.

I admit i was a non believer in the early days, and maybe rightly so due mainly to the Brisbane losses, but to watch how he has transformed into the champ he is today is a true reflection of his hard work and persistence. Hats off to him.

Contratulations Leon you are a legend..
First time I saw this bloke play was for Colingwood reserves at the G before a game back in the day. I remember thinking, this guys just too much pace and skill to run around with these posers :P

Struggled a bit early on but he has matured into a genuine gun and one of the most important players in the team..

Hats off Leon, your highlight wheel will be longer than most when you hang up the boots. Champ..

P.S. Has anyone ever seen a player that can gather as cleanly as this man in any condition? Genial..

why not 100% Scottish or Irish as well?

Off topic now but here goes

That's the point - Identity isn't about genetics - it's a mix of how you see yourself and how you think others see you. A lot has happened since the 1840s to identify that background as being simply Australian as opposed to Scottish/Irish. Most "white"/Anglo-Saxon/Celtic Australians consider themselves Australian for the same reason. If you're a 6th generation white person in Australia, others see you as a white Australian (whether your ancestors originally Welsh or English), and that's how you might see yourself.

I don't expect that my great-great-great-great grandchildren will consider themselves Greek, even if I do in this place and this time. They won't have grown up with the culture and the ties to the homeland (including continuing contact with cousins etc) will probably have gone.

I can go into mitochondrial DNA evidence showing how all Europeans are descended from 7 people and how all racial differences within that group are more imaginery than real, but that's going even more off topic!

Good on ya Leon!! It just goes to show that persistence and belief can go such a long way. I love how the crowd roars in anticipation and excitement whenever he pounces on the ball near the goals.

Congrats to leon on 150 great games. Plenty more to come though...he will be 'igniting' us for a while yet.

How about if I see myself as eskimo? Even tho I am German /Irish.

Have you been raised as an Inuit (the term "Eskimo" is considered offensive)? Does the Inuit community accept you as one of them?
If I pay them enough money, I'm sure they will accept me, does that make me one of them?

The question is therefore, if you move into another environment and live as one of the indigeneous peoples in that environment, does that make you one of them by virtue of lifestyle over actual genetic background?

My great grandfather came out from Ireland late in the 1800's and apparently was a brilliant solicitor, but a shocking drunk. He lived up Echuca way. He would often go off with the aborigines in the area for months at a time to get away from all the things that made him drink. He was that enamoured with them as a people he gave two of his daughters aboriginal names. Did that make him an aboriginal? he lived their life for long periods. I have often wondered about this.
