Like all first round picks are equal.

You are talking late teens, early twenties picks.

I’m happy with Serong and Young.

You three muppets are in the seconds.

Yes and I would much prefer Sam De Koning who we could’ve taken over either of Serong or Young plus we would still have two first round picks on top of that. We probably should have also taken GC’s offer for the Philip pick which would’ve meant we would have been able to turn it into Saad.
I still expect Stocker and Kemp to be consistent AFL level players. Philip fumbles so will struggle.

So pretty much they aren’t all equal but if you want a player like Jackson this year then you may need another first rounder to add to your first rounder this year and next. So he would most likely cost you three first rounders in the same range we had our first rounders (or net Melbourne three). We managed to do that with pick 5. So we pretty much turned pick 5 into the capital it costs to get someone like Jackson. That’s good business

The Stocker trade was good in theory.
The Blues got players they rated at each pick.

Stocker was 6 on their board that year so they got him for what they perceived as value at the time. Time will tell how that pans out but it’s probably not the progress they were hoping for, four years in.

SOS was super keen for Serong and was hoping he would drop to them, and I reckon he was pretty confident this would happen. His trade back down the draft was canny at the time when his player wasn’t available.

Kemp was a classic injured player punt for SOS. He rated him strongly but knew he could get him later in the first round as he wasn’t as highly rated by others. It will be interesting to see what position he ends up playing at the level.

With Philp SOS had to jump the queue to get him, trading up. They couldn’t read his name out quick enough. They saw something in him they just had to make sure they had.

From a strategy perspective id rate their trading work to get three picks highly. They fell down in the players they identified at these picks. SOS was always chasing value in his trades and drafting, which was great to watch. But he cashed out here.

With their history of holding onto players hoping they will come good, I’d expect them to sign Stocker again for another couple of years. He may read the tea leaves and think that if he’s pigeonholed as a half back at the Blues, he may be bereft of chances to break into the best 22 with the players they have brought into that position recently. He may get a consistent game at the top level at another club with a dearth of players in that position.

And actual opportunity to prove their worth.

If you can't get games and a club is a bad fit for you - you just have to move on before it's too late. That's true in every sport.

Doubt a club can or will offer more than the Blues - maybe 100-150k max? Add in all the club sponsorships and third party deals and it's not much more at all.

I don't think Kemp is going to be leaving the best 22 any time soon. Looks a natural 3rd intercepting tall.

Stocker has quite a bit of competition for either a back pocket or permanent midfield spot but I think he will work his way in. I'd prefer him to Boyd, for example.

An extra $150k is a hell of a lot for someone who isn’t on big money though. If he actually starts getting games somewhere else he’ll end up way, way ahead.
In saying that if he couldn’t cope with the hub then someone like him may be better off staying in a comfortable environment

Depends how much he's backing himself to make up the difference in a subsequent extension.

2 years at 250k at Carlton with the possibility of making 350-400k when he is OOC again or 3 years at 350k elsewhere?

Factoring in endorsements elsewhere, performance clauses, games triggers etc the margin is fairly slight.

It’s a massive difference. If he’s smart and thinking about buying a house or something then over a 20 odd year loan that amount more then doubles. He also isn’t even an established player so he is taking a big risk imo.

19 players unavailable last week (apparently) and he didn’t get a look in.
Carlton coaches would probably say that’s where he’s at.
It’s a funny one because as an inside mid, KPF or HB it would be a nightmare to get into our side even with the injuries we have had. Arguably or two best depth players in Stoker and Dow just haven’t been needed

I'd love for a journo in a presser to ask where Stocker is and why he isn't getting games. Would currently have him easily ahead of Newnes as our 7th defender.
They may have wanted to give him an extra week to build his tank. Was clearly brought back too early last time.

Clubs looking for an inside mid will definitely come knocking. He and Dow shape as two of the biggest bargains of the upcoming offseason.
