Tony Liberatore said today that he's after an assistant coaching role for next year and that he is particularly looking at an assistant coach role at Brisbane so he can work under Leigh Matthews with the best team in the comp.

To me this would be a good move. He will bring toughness and our team next year will be tougher than what they are already are (if it's possible).

Libba has a good football brain and is an ideal assistant coach.

With Gary O'Donnell possibly linked to the Adelaide coaching job, this leaves a vacancy for Libba to show his stuff.

Yeah, I think Leigh would probably like that.

Only issue is what he brings is pretty similar to what Lambert brings. Average hands, sure feet, hard nose, sharp mind. GO'D and Blakey were different types of players.

Still would be worth a try.

Will Fly have the chance to gouge him back to settle the score?

;)

And this is all assuming tht O'Donnell will go elsewhere. He has said year after year that he doesn't want a senior coaching position and that he and his family are happy and settled in Brisbane.

My first inclination was to rubbish this as another SB leftfielder.

But OK Special...........I'm always happy to keep an open mind.

Where exactly did Libba express his interest in an assistant coaching role at the Lions?

Has there been any reaction(apart from yours) from the BLFC?

Where has O'Donnell been "possibly linked" to the Adelaide coaching job?

How would Liberatore bring more "toughness" to our club.?
(My own view, is that Libba was a dirty little sniper rather than a real tough footballer).

What is Libba's CV as far as coaching is concerned, since he retired as a player?

He was particularly impressive for us at the Hawks (working with Box Hill), seemed to fit into the role with ease. Was disappointed when I heard he left, to go to Carlton of all places because of the contribution he was making to our reserves team.

However SB you only want him at Brisbane becase you met him :p

That one I can answer. He coached the Box Hill Hawks, - Hawthorn's VFL team. Looking at the current Hawks that doesn't look so impressive, but I'm pretty sure he coached them into the grandfinal. He's been very good for Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell apparently. Mitchell won the VFL medal while playing about 13 senior games for Hawthorn (or something like that).

While I don't condone some of his extreme acts, I think he could bring useful things to Brisbane.

My theory goes like this.

Truly great players make ordinary coaches as a rule (with a few noteable exceptions of course). Of the current bunch probably only Leigh (a superstar) and Daniher (cut down by injury) were gifted players. Generally, I think your Ablett's, Jezzalenko's, Royce Hart's, Tim Watson's etc are that good they can't explain how they do it. They just do it.

Pagan, Malthouse, Parkin, Sheedy,.. were all hard men, - disciplined - but not especially talented. They survived on their wits and understanding of what was going on around them from an early stage in their career.

Too short, too slow, can't kick, ordinary skills, too old, don't fit the game plan,... Libba survived by finding his way around roadblocks at every point in his career.

You can teach that.

Ablett survived by calmly jumping up on top of a blokes head, catching a footy and slotting it with his left foot over his right shoulder before hitting the ground.

You can't teach that.

The last time the coaches merry go round was on, I distinctly rember O'Donnell saying he and his whole family were settled and happy in Brisbane. You wouldn't reckon he would want to move if he feels like that. Not everyone wants to coach, just look at Mark Harvey.Totally happy doing what they do,no pressure coaching situations for them.Sounds to me like they have it right.

As for Libba,I would reckon there would be a disharmony amongst the members if they got him, I would prefer they got Ashcroft who is assistant at Southport over Libba any day.

How come Libba is on the move? Last time I knew he was still assaint coach to Denis Pagan. It would be Intresting why he'd move. Because next year the Blues will probably be in the finals! Why would he leave a potetionally young and able club. He would have to have real convidence about the lions over the next 5 years. Not implining that they wont have success or wont win premierships.

Libba would make a great assistant coach at Brisbane.

However, it will be up to Gary O'Donnell if he wants the job at Adelaide.

Come on!

I think it's time people moved on about Libba and McRae incident. That's in the past. Libba was a decent player, he was a good player and is a legend of the game, no doubt about it. Hope he gets hall of fame status in a few years time because he does deserve it.

And I for one would like him at the club.
