I forgot the name of the place but they used to have placement agencies that could arrange a pub job with accommodation before you flew over. I thought it was pretty good.

yeah this. A quick google search should help you out. If it's shitkicker pub work you want then you can sort that out before you even leave australia

This is where I ended up. Little pub tucked away in the heart of Marylebone. Lots of doctors, dentists, nurses and even models mixed in with the regulars.

I worked here too for about nine months in Clapham North.. Looks very gentrified now, it was a dump when I worked there. Top floor second set of windows from the right was my room.

Moving to the UK with no jerb now they're months away from being ass****ed by Brexit isn't something I'd want to do.

Anecdotally - very anecdotally - Australian youf are over the 'work in a pub' thing. If they want the living/work experience it's for something relevent to their interests/career and if they want the holiday they'll save up for the holiday then come home. This is probably a combination of cheaper flights and any cool image England had during the Blair years (1997-2007) being long gone.

What's the appeal of working at a pub in the UK anyway? Do they let you drink on the job or something?

They do in France

Many a night when I'd finished I'd not know how I got home the night before. Can wear thongs and smoke ciggies behind the bar too(technically smoking is illegal inside but some places dont give a damn for the man).

I think Canadian ski resorts are the new English pubs

England isn’t hugely trendy either - it’s all about Southern Europe (who can blame people too). People go to London to start and end their trip and that’s really it.

As for the UK pub thing I think it’s just a cliche as it was easy work and social and plenty of it around. It made sense. I don’t think people dreamed of being behind a bar but it was the go to and quite often panned out as a good way to just live in the UK and travel the continent a lot.

**** Canada though. Canucks are just snowed in frat boys.

Never been to England but looks cold dirty and boring. Like their test side [emoji41]

I thought the same before actually going there 6 years ago, and I have to say Ive seen **** all of England except for 3 trips to London, but it is a magnificent vibrant city. Was so much better than I expected. For instance, we were travelling to Dublin, Porto, Rome, Brussels in the same month and London was the lowest of my expectations, but I bloody loved it.

Wouldn't want to live there more than 12 months though.

One of my best mates did the London move last year. He was fed up with his life here; he realised he didn't want to work in the field he studied, had had some girl problems, and was pretty much just primed for a change. He landed this dream of a job where every other week he's working in a different European city, and seems pretty settled with a girlfriend. He's got no plans to come back any time soon, which is fine by me given that he's my accomodation later in the year.

Working a Canadian ski season sounds awful now. Even Niseko is basically Bali on ice. It's cool to go to places full of locals where you are the odd one out, and it's cool to go to places with people from all over the world. Places outside Australia that are 90% dickhead Australians, pass.
