I think the Point is missed by some, it's not that he might be looking at his options, heaps of players do that during the season.

Usually while the player is focused on playing, managers work behind the scenes. This usually and especially is the case with a player, playing for the firsts, in a team in the running for finals, who's committed and focused for the cause.

Lin is on the fringe, of course he is. But he's part of the team, playing an important role especially while we have a few injuries. Injuries happen all the time, he may remain in the team and play finals, he may remain in the team despite injuries, who knows.

He needs to not only be focused on that, but at least look like he is! Supporters and more importantly his team mates need to think that he is. Right now, I'm not sure. Are his team mates? Who knows and I think that's sad.

Another distraction, we don't need. As someone who likes Lin as a player, who has supported him, I'm very disappointed in him, not because he might want to go to greener pastures, but because he put that ahead of his team mates, while the season is very much alive.

A number of footy people have said that it is 'unusual' for a player to tour an opposing clubs facilities mid season. 'Unusual' is often code for ordinary behaviour IMO. I agree. It's an incredibly poor look and potentially destabilising. Hell even Nathan Brown is critical.

Now if the club signed off on Lin doing this then they have screwed up. If Lin did it off his own bat - then he has messed up in a big way.

I don't think anyone begrudges a player discreetly exploring his options to secure his future. I've no doubt most do it. But this is far from discreet.

On Jong as a player - yes he has athletic traits. Yes he has performed ok and doesn't deserve to be dropped on form ATM.

However, Jong's biggest weakness IMO is a deal breaker. It's not his poor vision or execution. It's not his proclivity to disappear. It's not his unwillingness to run defensively as hard as he does offensively. No - Jong fumbles at critical times and will regularly break down scoring chains and cause turnovers with his incredibly poor ball handling.

So I'm pretty happy if he goes as I think his weaknesses far outweigh his positives.

Clearly the club isn't as excited about Jong as some here or the wider AFL market, otherwise he would have got an offer that caused him to re-sign.

If Jong only got a 1 yr offer and he thinks can do better that is fine by me. I am thinking Hrovat may well be in the same boat. Again not disappointed if he goes.

Exactly :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I agree with your sentiments but touring facilities on his own time isn't really going to distract him from playing or training well.

Can we all turn down the dial a few notches and chill out? Jesus. It's not like he's essential to the team or ever will be (even if he pulls a Kennedy somewhere else).

He can tour places out of interest. The club has probably told him that he's gone when he didn't accept the shitty contract we gave him (cue Barrett blaming Tom Boyd). If he has value, and it seems he does, this is a ****ing fantastic situation for us. Don't blame him for looking out for his career, which clearly won't involve us.

I also think that he's the kind of bloke that will play his best regardless of off field circumstances, despite any other fault you might find in him as a player or person

I don't begrudge him for looking to secure his future, but I also don't really see the purpose of touring another clubs facilities mid-season. It would be strange if a couple of extra exercise bikes at the HoldenLexusEmirates Centre is what swings a players decision.

Scott Lucas who is a player manager now, said on SEN it was not an uncommon thing or surprising.

Happens all the time, this time he just got caught.

That's why I suspect that the news of the meeting was leaked by Collingwood.

Well said. The VFL game that he played against Richmond(? I think) where he was BOG exemplifies this description. He was clearly the most athletic player on the ground, seemingly everywhere, taking some great pack marks. His disposal was still quite poor - covered up at times by his ability to recover the ball by virtue of being the fastest. This is where using statistics to objectively measure a player's performance falls short. It certainly doesn't acknowledge his poor positioning around the contest in the Sydney game.

I love the speed he brings... but if he can't accept the Jack Redpath type deal, then good luck to him.

Jong especially has poor odds considering he's an inside mid that's depth for arguably the best performing midfield.
Jong has breakaway speed that our other mids simple don't have - but if we need to make space this weekend and it's a contest between Jong and Stevens, well sorry Lin but it's no contest. I actually think Stevens is underrated, when he puts it all together he's amazing (the Saints game a year or two ago) but more importantly when he's off he finds a way to influence the contest.

I really get the feeling that Bevo values footballers with athletic limitations over amazing athletes who have to learn the game.

The opposite argument from Jong's perspective is why is he only get offered a low based 1 year contract when other have been shown more loyalty. I would give him 2 years.

I don't want him to go, yet the fact is we will lose a few fringe type players and maybe a good player due to the Boyd contract, its inevitable.

Just as Sydney lost a few Mumford etc. when Buddy got the dollars. Hopefully they can balance the players we lose with some good kids from he draft.

Well we have to draft players at the end of the year, so it allows us to put Jong up there without feeling bad and letting him take opportunities without upsetting people

Don't agree that Boyd is costing us fringe players. IMO we have the money for the players we really want to keep.

Maybe our list team's view is well...Meh.

Yeah he does, but he doesnt use it unless he is already in space, which admittedly is not pointless, but much less useful than using it to break away from congestion the way Stringer does - and always considers - as a first option.

If I was Bev, I would put him in the VFL and forbid him to handball - seriously!

Exactly - won't lose players cause of Boyd - we will lose players because of the great depth and eveness of our list. Opportunities will be sort elsewhere to get game time

Teammate Jason Johannisen was more forgiving.

“Contracts are a part of the AFL, so it’s just going to be up to Lin and the club to decide what he does,” he said.

Dogs ruckman Jordan Roughead conceded Jong’s secret tour was a surprise.

“Footy is a really cut-throat environment and you want to be playing at the highest level and we will be doing all we can, I’m sure, to keep Lin at the Dogs,” Roughead said on Fox Sports.
