CARLTON is the favourite of many experts to make the finals this season after a long time in the football wilderness.
But does the playing list have what it takes?

On the eve of the premiership season, assistant coach Mark Riley offers his assessment of the club's senior players and rookies.

SENIOR LIST
Joe Anderson
Joey's had injury problems in the past, but he's had a good pre-season and we're hoping he can remain injury-free which will allow him to put some pressure on the defenders who are in front of him at this point.

Dennis Armfield
Dennis’ last two games in the NAB Cup were promising as a smaller defender and running through the midfield. Our expectation is that he become a regular player this season and to do that he needs to work at being a more consistent kicker.

Mark Austin
Mark has really developed physically over the summer. He just needs to play some consistent footy at Bullants level before he can press for a position as a tall defender. He can follow a good game with a bad one, so getting consistent performance from quarter to quarter and week to week is his focus.

Jordan Bannister
He has had an interrupted pre-season after suffering a bad hamstring injury last year. Was handy early as a tagger last year, but we need him to demonstrate he can play at AFL intensity and AFL pace before he breaks back into the team.

Adam Bentick
Adam had an interrupted pre-season due to knee surgery. He’s a handy inside ball-winner and excellent tackler but must work on kicking and decision making.

Eddie Betts
He has had a blinder of a pre-season and is the fittest he has ever been. He lights us up in the forward line and we're also looking to use him a bit more in the centre square as an impact player. Is extremely highly skilled, but consistency is the key.

Paul Bower
Paul had a good pre-season and has an AFL-sized body now. He's probably going to fill a regular role across half-back where he can provide good run. He still needs to come out of his shell a little bit and be more vocal.

Steven Browne
Brownie is like a race horse in that he does his best work on a Saturday afternoon, but not so much during the week despite training really hard. He's very versatile and courageous. We were stoked with his performance in the NAB Cup semi which was his first hitout. Needs to work on his ground ball handling and 'depth' kicking.

Andrew Carrazzo
He is a versatile player who has become a team leader for us. Was flying until he broke his arm, but he's got a guard on and is back running now. He should be able to return by about round three or four.

Cameron Cloke
As far as his measurements and weight are concerned he's just about as fit as he's ever been. We're looking to make him a key forward rather than a ruckman and we've liked what we've seen. He just needs to keep working on his forward line play.

Jake Edwards
It's a big year for Jake. He's a beautiful mark on the lead and a good kick, but he needs to add a few more dimensions to his game if he's going to play regularly.

Brendan Fevola
He is bigger, but nowhere near the upper body mass that's been documented. He played at 101kg and he's about 104kg now. He's had a strong pre-season. We're looking to vary his role a bit so that he's not the No.1 go-to guy every time. You might see him a bit further up the ground at times.

Brad Fisher
We've made subtle changes to our game plan that we hope will see Brad in the action up forward more this year. He's a beautiful third man in mark, but he needs to add more consistent kicking for goal to become a really potent forward.

Bryce Gibbs
He has had an excellent pre-season and continues to grow his game. We're looking for him to establish himself as a midfielder. Everything we ask him to work on, he improves almost immediately. He is a great young man to coach and a future leader.

Shaun Grigg
He's the quiet achiever of the young guns, an excellent clearance player and ball winner who has worked hard on his fitness over summer despite a couple of minor hiccups along the way. Just needs to tidy up his field passing a little.

Richard Hadley
He seems to be over a frustrating year with injury and is a lot stronger through the core and his legs now. He's an outstanding stoppage player and tackler and wins the hard ball and handballs well in tight. He just needs to demonstrate the ability to cover the ground throughout a match to show he's completely over that injury.

Shaun Hampson
Is coming along nicely as a ruckman and we're doing a bit of forward line work with him as well. Still has a lot of game education ahead of him after coming to AFL late. He's a brilliant athlete and we're working at fast-tracking his 'game sense'.

Adam Hartlett
He can really play the game, but struggles with injury. He's got himself nice and strong, but durability is the key for him. Needs to string some games together because that's how you improve as a footballer.

Ryan Houlihan
We've asked Ryan to get a bit more inside ball and lay more tackles and so far he's been doing that. You know what you get with Ryan with the silky skills, but if he can add a bit more physicality the team will be better for it.

Michael Jamison
A strong pre-season has built up his upper body. He has excellent pace which helps him defend the leading forward and should now have the strength to hold his own one-on-one. He will be one of the cornerstones of our back six this year.

Chris Johnson
He's a beautiful kick, but he's been in the system a few years now so he needs to take the next step. He'll get an opportunity off half-back and a wing because we think we need to improve our kicking out of defence. He's been working hard with Brett Montgomery on defending one-on-one.

Chris Judd
He has had an injury-free pre-season after well-documented groin issues. He's just a consummate professional who is still looking to add to his game. He'll play a little bit inside the scrums, a little bit outside and up forward this year.

Matthew Kreuzer
For a young man, the amount of work he does is quite incredible. His second, third and fourth efforts around the ball should see him take the next step as a ruckman. We've worked with him on his pattern running, which should help him gain more possessions. We're also looking to teach him more about forward line play.

Marc Murphy
After another good pre-season he's become a very powerful player, but still has those exquisite skills. He's a wonderful offensive player and we've worked pretty hard with him on the defensive side of his game with good results so far.

Setanta O'hAilpin
He had a well-publicised pre-season blow-up, but he's fighting his way back from that and is training hard. We'll persist with him as a tall defender and consistent footy back at VFL level is the key for him.

Rhys O'Keeffe
He's a powerfully built kid and we've been happy with his early work on the track. He's a fantastic deep kick off his left, but he just needs to work on his passing and inside work. We're stoked with Rhys and he'll be a very good player for a long time.

Mitch Robinson
His attitude is infectious. He's high-octane, trains at a million miles an hour and talks at a million miles an hour. Sometimes we have to pull the reins on him. He puts his head over the ball and has a real crack and should play senior football this year.

Jordan Russell
He played a fantastic team role for us last year and is on the cusp of becoming a very good player. He's done a lot of work and he's got all the tools.

Heath Scotland
He has had groin issues, but is just starting to get going again. He's a beautiful user of the ball and he's played one game so he shouldn't be far away.

Kade Simpson
Kade’s enjoyed an excellent pre-season after playing for Australia, which really added to his confidence. He played superbly in the NAB Cup, is one of our team leaders and we're just rapt with how he's going, he just needs to convert more.

Nick Stevens
Nick has had the benefit of a good pre-season after being worried by that neck injury last year. He's set himself for a consistent year and put himself in a position to do that with his fitness. We want him to be more than just a centre square midfielder.

Bret Thornton
He probably saw too much action as the full back at Carlton during that bleak on-field period. He took a hammering during that time, but he's back playing some really good footy and the guys look up to him down back.

Caleb Tiller
Caleb suffered through some traumas with the bushfires and we're just being very patient. He's very young, but he's getting used to an AFL program and putting on some good weight. We'll look for him to play some consistent football at VFL level.

Jarrad Waite
We used Jarrad predominantly down back last year and he will continue to be used mainly as defender, but we’re not afraid to get him to pinch hit elsewhere as he's so skilful and versatile. He's been working on defending in one-on-one situations.

Andrew Walker
He is just overcoming a slight hiccup he had with his shoulder. He's an incredible aerobic athlete who we hope can stay healthy because he adds a lot to the side.

Robert Warnock
It's been frustrating for young Robbie because he came to us injured and then he's had foot stress fractures to deal with. We'll be patient with him.

Simon Wiggins
He brings a real physical appetite to our team and is loved by his teammates and coaches alike. He gives us flexibility across half-forward and half-back and has been working to improve his consistency in front of goal.

Chris Yarran
Chris is getting fitter, but it is a long way from Swan Districts fitness to AFL fitness. He's got exquisite skills, but he just needs to work at adapting to the intensity of both training and matches. He's still young and we'll give him plenty of time, but he will add a real exciting dimension to our forward line.

ROOKIES
Greg Bentley
He's improved his running times, dropped a bit of weight and has played some solid football for us. He's a wonderful long kick, but just needs to work on his short kicking in terms of his decision making. He's been a real good acquisition.

David Ellard
Davey really works hard, he gives you everything, and he's got a massive heart. He needs to keep working at his ball handling in terms of his hands.

Jeff Garlett
He's been a real find in our pre-season, he's played NAB Cup and the defensive element of his game was incredible. He's shown a touch of magic at times and he's really just come from the clouds for us.

Lachie Hill
He's doing well, he got a taste in the NAB Cup, and has excellent pace. He just needs to continue to improve on executing his skills under pressure.

Sam Jacobs
He has got himself into excellent condition and has really improved in our new ruck program. He's getting around the deck, he's rucking well; we're stoked.

Aaron Joseph
He's a powerful little beast and he's got the appetite to really get under an opposition player's skin. He's shown he will stick to his defensive task and he can take the game on going the other way. A focus for him would be his kicking on the run.

Darren Pfeiffer
He was having a good pre-season until he hurt his shoulder. He's as tough as nails, but he's another lad who just needs to work on his decision making.

Luke Stanton
Luke can really run the lines and we're looking at him to play a run-with role. He's got a fair way to go, but he's a good young kid and has done all the work required. He needs to establish himself as a regular VFL player.

Nice read :thumbsu:

It is always interesting to hear what the coaching staff have to say with regards to our list and where it is heading.

This just adds to the excitement of the new season and how everyone fits into the list and the specific plans we have for them. It is then the players that need to stand up and deliver.

Great and honest appraisals from Mark Riley. :thumbsu:

It appears the club couldn't be happier with how the draft panned out for the Blues.

Edwards really need to pull his finger out to make the most of his God given talent.

Edwards offers our structure more than Fisher if he can step up and improve his workrate.

Good link that isn't on Carltonfc.com.au.

I love Riley's comment on AJ.
Aaron Joseph
He's a powerful little beast and he's got the appetite to really get under an opposition player's skin. He's shown he will stick to his defensive task and he can take the game on going the other way. A focus for him would be his kicking on the run.

He had a well-publicised pre-season blow-up, but he's fighting his way back from that and is training hard. We'll persist with him as a tall defender and consistent footy back at VFL level is the key for him.

Interesting choice of words.

Great read though.. looking forward to see Gibbs and Grigg tear up the midfield this year.

Marc Murphy
After another good pre-season he's become a very powerful player, but still has those exquisite skills. He's a wonderful offensive player and we've worked pretty hard with him on the defensive side of his game with good results so far.

Is he talking about our Marc Murphy!?

I pray that Hartlett's body starts to stand up. Rated so highly by everyone at the club and we've been patiently waiting. If he was fit and could get some games together I'm sure he could be a good forward option. Doesn't seem to dominate many of the reserve games so who knows.

I find it interesting to hear what each player is specifically working on at training. Waite doing one on one defensive work is pleasing to hear. He has the makings of a very good CHB if he can improve his one on one body work.

I find it interesting that we're developing Stanton as a run-with player at 192cm...

It is interesting.....Stanton always played as a tall rangy running type HB/Wingman at TAC level....never really played KP. Early on he seemed to lack concentration and discipline over 4 quarters, especially with the defensive side of the game, however towards the end of the year he did stick to some defensive jobs better.....perhaps this is our way of Grigging him ? ;)

I love these assessments. Great read. I also don't mind a satirical read between the lines. It's a joke guys, don't get upset. :D I really don't believe much of what I have written.

Joe Anderson
Joey's had injury problems in the past, but he's had a good pre-season and we're hoping he can remain injury-free which will allow him to put some pressure on the defenders who are in front of him at this point.

Translation: He has a lot of defenders in front of him for a spot.

Dennis Armfield
Dennis’ last two games in the NAB Cup were promising as a smaller defender and running through the midfield. Our expectation is that he become a regular player this season and to do that he needs to work at being a more consistent kicker.

He's fast but he can't kick.

Mark Austin
Mark has really developed physically over the summer. He just needs to play some consistent footy at Bullants level before he can press for a position as a tall defender. He can follow a good game with a bad one, so getting consistent performance from quarter to quarter and week to week is his focus.

Just when we think he has stepped up, he plays like crap again.

Jordan Bannister
He has had an interrupted pre-season after suffering a bad hamstring injury last year. Was handy early as a tagger last year, but we need him to demonstrate he can play at AFL intensity and AFL pace before he breaks back into the team.

He has slipped well down the list.

Adam Bentick
Adam had an interrupted pre-season due to knee surgery. He’s a handy inside ball-winner and excellent tackler but must work on kicking and decision making.

He gets the ball but then butchers it.

Eddie Betts
He has had a blinder of a pre-season and is the fittest he has ever been. He lights us up in the forward line and we're also looking to use him a bit more in the centre square as an impact player. Is extremely highly skilled, but consistency is the key.

He's a show pony who goes missing.

Paul Bower
Paul had a good pre-season and has an AFL-sized body now. He's probably going to fill a regular role across half-back where he can provide good run. He still needs to come out of his shell a little bit and be more vocal.

Still plays like a startled emu (thanks Thy)

Steven Browne
Brownie is like a race horse in that he does his best work on a Saturday afternoon, but not so much during the week despite training really hard. He's very versatile and courageous. We were stoked with his performance in the NAB Cup semi which was his first hitout. Needs to work on his ground ball handling and 'depth' kicking.

Hughesy won't shut up about finding this bloke.

Andrew Carrazzo
He is a versatile player who has become a team leader for us. Was flying until he broke his arm, but he's got a guard on and is back running now. He should be able to return by about round three or four.

He's a good bloke and we need senior players.

Cameron Cloke
As far as his measurements and weight are concerned he's just about as fit as he's ever been. We're looking to make him a key forward rather than a ruckman and we've liked what we've seen. He just needs to keep working on his forward line play.

He sucks as a ruckman and we have no centre half forward. Touch wood.

Jake Edwards
It's a big year for Jake. He's a beautiful mark on the lead and a good kick, but he needs to add a few more dimensions to his game if he's going to play regularly.

All he can do is lead and kick. We've all but lost hope.

We're anxious to prove we are not a one man team.

Brad Fisher
We've made subtle changes to our game plan that we hope will see Brad in the action up forward more this year. He's a beautiful third man in mark, but he needs to add more consistent kicking for goal to become a really potent forward.

Great mark but he kicks like my sister.

Bryce Gibbs
He has had an excellent pre-season and continues to grow his game. We're looking for him to establish himself as a midfielder. Everything we ask him to work on, he improves almost immediately. He is a great young man to coach and a future leader.

*sigh* we love you Gibbsy. Don't go back to Adelaide.

Shaun Grigg
He's the quiet achiever of the young guns, an excellent clearance player and ball winner who has worked hard on his fitness over summer despite a couple of minor hiccups along the way. Just needs to tidy up his field passing a little.

If he lifts his efficiency rating, we are so going to flip the bird to those so called draft experts and Jetta fans on BigFooty.

Great in close but boy is he slow.

Shaun Hampson
Is coming along nicely as a ruckman and we're doing a bit of forward line work with him as well. Still has a lot of game education ahead of him after coming to AFL late. He's a brilliant athlete and we're working at fast-tracking his 'game sense'.

Can run and jump like a star but has no clue when and where to do it.

Adam Hartlett
He can really play the game, but struggles with injury. He's got himself nice and strong, but durability is the key for him. Needs to string some games together because that's how you improve as a footballer.

Injuries have pretty much cost him a career.

Ryan Houlihan
We've asked Ryan to get a bit more inside ball and lay more tackles and so far he's been doing that. You know what you get with Ryan with the silky skills, but if he can add a bit more physicality the team will be better for it.

Been as soft as butter to date but needs to toughen up to hold his spot.

Michael Jamison
A strong pre-season has built up his upper body. He has excellent pace which helps him defend the leading forward and should now have the strength to hold his own one-on-one. He will be one of the cornerstones of our back six this year.
And he came off the rookie list nyah nyah nyah nyah :p

Chris Johnson
He's a beautiful kick, but he's been in the system a few years now so he needs to take the next step. He'll get an opportunity off half-back and a wing because we think we need to improve our kicking out of defence. He's been working hard with Brett Montgomery on defending one-on-one.

Seems okay so far but couldn't get a game at Melbourne ..... what's the catch?

Chris Judd
He has had an injury-free pre-season after well-documented groin issues. He's just a consummate professional who is still looking to add to his game. He'll play a little bit inside the scrums, a little bit outside and up forward this year.

We wish had several Judd's so we could play them all over the ground.

Matthew Kreuzer
For a young man, the amount of work he does is quite incredible. His second, third and fourth efforts around the ball should see him take the next step as a ruckman. We've worked with him on his pattern running, which should help him gain more possessions. We're also looking to teach him more about forward line play.

We are hedging our bets in case he doesn't make it as a ruckman.

Marc Murphy
After another good pre-season he's become a very powerful player, but still has those exquisite skills. He's a wonderful offensive player and we've worked pretty hard with him on the defensive side of his game with good results so far.

Dick said to say that he is also a great overhead mark.

Setanta O'hAilpin
He had a well-publicised pre-season blow-up, but he's fighting his way back from that and is training hard. We'll persist with him as a tall defender and consistent footy back at VFL level is the key for him.

He's a depth player.

Rhys O'Keeffe
He's a powerfully built kid and we've been happy with his early work on the track. He's a fantastic deep kick off his left, but he just needs to work on his passing and inside work. We're stoked with Rhys and he'll be a very good player for a long time.

He is green and will take a while.

Mitch Robinson
His attitude is infectious. He's high-octane, trains at a million miles an hour and talks at a million miles an hour. Sometimes we have to pull the reins on him. He puts his head over the ball and has a real crack and should play senior football this year.

He's an annoying little shit but is pretty good so we will have to put up with him.

Jordan Russell
He played a fantastic team role for us last year and is on the cusp of becoming a very good player. He's done a lot of work and he's got all the tools.
He is not yet a very good player but he tries hard.

Heath Scotland
He has had groin issues, but is just starting to get going again. He's a beautiful user of the ball and he's played one game so he shouldn't be far away.

We need him but are worried he is very underdone.

Kade Simpson
Kade’s enjoyed an excellent pre-season after playing for Australia, which really added to his confidence. He played superbly in the NAB Cup, is one of our team leaders and we're just rapt with how he's going, he just needs to convert more.

Great player but has lost his running goal accuracy.

Nick Stevens
Nick has had the benefit of a good pre-season after being worried by that neck injury last year. He's set himself for a consistent year and put himself in a position to do that with his fitness. We want him to be more than just a centre square midfielder.

Now that he isn't fat, we are hoping he can get to more contests and chase his opponent.

Bret Thornton
He probably saw too much action as the full back at Carlton during that bleak on-field period. He took a hammering during that time, but he's back playing some really good footy and the guys look up to him down back.

Is underrated because our defense was rubbish for a long time.

Caleb Tiller
Caleb suffered through some traumas with the bushfires and we're just being very patient. He's very young, but he's getting used to an AFL program and putting on some good weight. We'll look for him to play some consistent football at VFL level.

He's a project player, why are we even talking about him?

Jarrad Waite
We used Jarrad predominantly down back last year and he will continue to be used mainly as defender, but we’re not afraid to get him to pinch hit elsewhere as he's so skilful and versatile. He's been working on defending in one-on-one situations.

We need him to plug gaps everywhere.

Andrew Walker
He is just overcoming a slight hiccup he had with his shoulder. He's an incredible aerobic athlete who we hope can stay healthy because he adds a lot to the side.

Injuries are beginning to piss us off.

Robert Warnock
It's been frustrating for young Robbie because he came to us injured and then he's had foot stress fractures to deal with. We'll be patient with him.

Oh no, please stop getting injured, people are laughing at us.

Simon Wiggins
He brings a real physical appetite to our team and is loved by his teammates and coaches alike. He gives us flexibility across half-forward and half-back and has been working to improve his consistency in front of goal.

He's a great clubman who will retire early and probably coach the Bullants.

Doesn't train hard enough but get off his back, when he does get fit, he will justify his draft selection.

Greg Bentley
He's improved his running times, dropped a bit of weight and has played some solid football for us. He's a wonderful long kick, but just needs to work on his short kicking in terms of his decision making. He's been a real good acquisition.
Depth player but we are hoping Port stuffed up.

David Ellard
Davey really works hard, he gives you everything, and he's got a massive heart. He needs to keep working at his ball handling in terms of his hands.

The little fella just tries so hard. Pity really ...

Jeff Garlett
He's been a real find in our pre-season, he's played NAB Cup and the defensive element of his game was incredible. He's shown a touch of magic at times and he's really just come from the clouds for us.

Holy shit, we had a win!

Lachie Hill
He's doing well, he got a taste in the NAB Cup, and has excellent pace. He just needs to continue to improve on executing his skills under pressure.

Fast but turns it over thus why we tried to bring in some skilled players this year.

Sam Jacobs
He has got himself into excellent condition and has really improved in our new ruck program. He's getting around the deck, he's rucking well; we're stoked.

And we nearly let him go ... oops.

Aaron Joseph
He's a powerful little beast and he's got the appetite to really get under an opposition player's skin. He's shown he will stick to his defensive task and he can take the game on going the other way. A focus for him would be his kicking on the run.

He's a good tagger just doesn't know what the ball looks like.

Darren Pfeiffer
He was having a good pre-season until he hurt his shoulder. He's as tough as nails, but he's another lad who just needs to work on his decision making.

Things just aren't looking good for him.

Luke Stanton
Luke can really run the lines and we're looking at him to play a run-with role. He's got a fair way to go, but he's a good young kid and has done all the work required. He needs to establish himself as a regular VFL player.

Below VFL level at this stage. A mile off.

SENIOR LIST
Jordan Bannister
He has had an interrupted pre-season after suffering a bad hamstring injury last year. Was handy early as a tagger last year, but we need him to demonstrate he can play at AFL intensity and AFL pace before he breaks back into the team.

Adam Bentick

A minimum of three heads on the chopping block at seasons end.
Read - perform this year or gone for at least 3 of Edwards, Harts, Bentick and Banno.
Jordan Russell
He played a fantastic team role for us last year and is on the cusp of becoming a very good player. He's done a lot of work and he's got all the tools.

Read - we (the coaches) love this bloke.;)

Setanta's assessment didn't sound too promising either.

Excellent write up and gives good insight into how the coaches see our list.
Especailly with the comments re-Austin.
Will be interesting to see who comes in when we get an injury to Bower, Jammo, Waite or Thornton.
If form is similar and Aussie gets the nod Setanta can start to plan an Irish Christmas and picking up his hurling career.

This article just shows what a motley bunch of so-called professionals we employ at our club. Any knowledgeable BF poster worth half their weight in gold can tell you that JR is rubbish and Yarran was a waste of a pick 6. :)

Tad pessimistic there Bear?

Or is hoping for injuries the industry's new business development strategy in the face of the GFC? :p

Exellent read.

Hopefully that'll silence a few posters around here.

And not one mention of the words squib or girls blouse.
Sorry just couldnt resist. :p:D

Great reading his assesments, especially JR's. Reading between the lines it suggests that JR had specific instructions that he stuck to despite his natural instincts, which suggest he is all the more deserving of our support for sacrificing his own game to adhere to team instructions.

We have a very exciting list. We are going places in a hurry. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Good hearing about Fisher playing more forward (considering his marking abilities, he played WAY to far up the ground last year), and Waite working on his one-on-one work.

The thing that caught my eye though was Rhys O'Keeffe

He's a powerfully built kid and we've been happy with his early work on the track. He's a fantastic deep kick off his left, but he just needs to work on his passing and inside work. We're stoked with Rhys and he'll be a very good player for a long time.

I'd love to be wrong, but the injury list of the past few years would tell you that at least one of these blokes will miss a game at some point during the season.

GFC or not......people will always hurt themselves.........business is stronger than ever BY.:D
