So, where we are at now:

Senior List: 32
Rookie List: 5
Rookie B: 2 (including Owies, who cannot stay on Rookie B list)
32+5+Owies=38, max=42. So 4 places now free, along with one free spot on the Rookie B list.

Waiting new contracts:
Senior List: Marchbank, Setterfield, Honey, Cuningham, Fogarty, Ed Curnow (6)
Rookie List: S Durdin, Cottrell, LOB, Boyd (4)
Rookie B: Owies, Akuei (2)

Some discussion a few weeks back that new contracts were imminent for Cotts, LOB & Boyd, but haven't seen confirmation.

May hold off on further changes till trade period now.

This is what I’ve come up with too. If we want to bring in a couple of players from other clubs (say Acres and McAsey) and bring in 3 kids across the drafts, we’re still going to need to let a couple of players go. Suspect Fogarty is next in line.

Considering the total number of players drafted that not a huge list.

But drafting is so easy to criticise in retrospect.
There are failures at every club.

But no Carlton would not have been a great environment on which to prosper for sure.

Unfortunately you cant give players a free ride as compensation for a bad culture or poor development.

Every club has hits and misses but surely we've had more misses then most. No question, the draft results speak for themselves. I'd love a stat showing average games played for players picked after 30. Absolutely horrendous and have been for 20 years.

It was the first game v Collingwood. Two left foot howlers. Was promptly dropped. But never given a fair run at it whilst Plowman was allowed to turn it over at will and survive multiple games.

Can we leave Plow out of it please?
Seriously give him a break!

They are not the same type and Plow is a far better player than Stocker.
If you cant see that, you're just a follower on the Plow hate train or dont understand the game as much as you'd like to think.

They were ALL too loose. Look at the space they're all giving their opponents. Brutal to blame Stock. I dont think any of them expected our forwards to let the ball come out that quickly let alone at all.

Every club would have jumped on Dow after us. He was one of the big 3 that year with Rayner, LDU and Dow. We developed hom badly.

Often the blame gets put on drafting, but player development is also a massive issue.

I find it hard to believe that the development of Dow, SPS, LOB etc. would've been the same if they were drafted to clubs that know how to develop talent

I thought I was going to be critiqued for under valuing players not the other way round. Sure, but they are all best 22 as they consistently get picked!! That was my criteria, are they players consistently playing AFL....yes, yes and yes.

If that's your criteria sure. I agree. Do I see them in our next premiership side? No I dont. There will be a few others in our current best 22 that wont be in our next premiership side either TBF. I'd expect another 7 or 8 more changes at least, to it before we're challenging genuinely for a premiership.

I don't disagree. I just couldn't give them a fail as they've played regular footy and have shown themselves to be capable AFL players. More duds then diamonds have come through recently.

That makes a huge difference on everything footy related let alone development.

But you cant keep underdeveloped players on the list as some kind of compensation for doing them wrong.
We'd have more spoons than cups in no time if we did that.

Well yes I guess we have to move on but if you want an explanation around why we have not played finals in 9 years, have a read through our drafting from the past 15 years. At what point do players show some accountability for their own development?

I rated Plowman until midyear. Go back and see my posts. I stood up for him like you do. But things changed very quickly. He made multiple errors that clearly cost us goals for around three weeks running. He was rubbish yet survived whilst others were promptly dropped on the back of one or two errors. Im merely pointing out the hypocrisy in the whole thing.

Well, not entirely shocked.

Sad, but not shocked.

Had him gone at the end of next year barring a dramatic change in just about everything about his game (other than hardness).

Maybe there wasn't a blow up but would have to professionalism was the key factor. Would have preferred to see him get one proper preseason before the delisting but is so far down the pecking order it isn't funny.

For the legends crying out that he didn't play mid, he could barely run out a game in the back pocket in AFL. No chance he ever developed an elite mid tank, and certainly should NOT have been given mid minutes this year. Could possibly have got to serviceable though.

All the crazy vossy comments are a bit ridiculous given this decision would probably be made between 3 or 4 people at the minimum.

That's just insulting to the people responsible for such monstrosities as:

- giving Zac Williams a 6 year, $850k per year contract

- trading 2 second round picks and a state league priority for the right to overpay Mitch McGovern

- the original Stocker trade

- drafting Dow and O'Brien with top 10 picks in the same year. Bonus points for passing on Cerra then trading a first round pick for him later on

- trading back in the draft from pick 12 (next 2 players = Kosi Pickett and Will Day) to draft an injured Brodie Kemp 1 pick ahead of Sam De Koning (whose brother is on the team), then trading up 2 picks later for... Sam Philp (this sequence is still mind boggling poor)

- appointing David Teague as coach with basically no process because he managed to go 5-5 with mediocre list.

Could probably go on and on here.

20 years since top 4. 10 years since finals. 7 years since we started a '3 year rebuild'.

Utterly reprehensible...
