I think it's time we try to find some gems in this draft. This is Austin's year of seeing what he can really do in regards to eyeing junior talent.

We need to watch our cap space and bringing in too many externals is a bit meh... if anything can he do a SOS and elevate some of our picks through some smart trading and manouvering? Will he be able to glean something of value for a Dow/Setterfield type? Will he even have the courage to trade a best 22 player out? Would Geelong bite really hard for a TDK? Would * sell the farm for a Harry (2 First rounders and a player or pick)... we have decent currency if we choose to use it.

How does Geelong, Collingwood, not do any major rebuilds and keep making finals, grand finals, etc,
The AFL Draft is not working, you won't see geelong do a rebuild like the Blues, too long don't win many games etc.
The draft absolutely works if you pick correctly and then have good player development. We are incredibly average in both regards.

Eh, grain of salt. Stocker being defended by the guy who moved heaven and earth to draft Stocker and talked him up as his sixth preference in that draft, and by a guy who coached Stocker at school footy and has close ties to the club that's rumoured to be into him.

They're not really offering anything we don't already know. He plays tough footy. He's had some injuries. The club know that about him and delisted him anyway. Presumably they're operating with more recent information than is available to SOS and Lloyd.

It's really 2 free hit guns with the 2 Daicos kids. If Peter had played for us, the ladder positions are probably reversed right now. Random luck.

The competition is so even, that any little extra certainly helps. Sydney up there because of Heeney and Mills from the academy. Geelong have that unique lifestyle attraction that has lured Dangerfield, Cameron etc. Brisbane will effectively get the number 1 pick this year despite finishing top 4.
I blame our past players. Why are all their kids duds?

yeah bit of brand protection from SOS

This is probably the key point in the TDK discussion he has shown very good growth in the last 12 mths and this will continue to in 2023.
TDK was fantastic against Darcy in the 2nd meeting, he has alot of upside in his
career and in our development.

The top 4 teams remaining have got to the pointy end without elite ruckman, so l don't see a ruckman eg Darcy as a priority in terms of what would be required to give up eg our 1st round pick.
Agreed, that was the point I was making. Develop TDK.
Apart from last year, no elite ruckman has won a flag in well over a decade and this year will be the same

Ruckmen have to be able to be a threat forward and capable around the ground

TDK is tracking well
Yep spot on.

Sydney keep doing so well because their culture and development is spot on

Was decent. I don't think he's ready to be a number one Ruckman yet. The problem IMO have is I don't think we can carry him in the 22 with Pitt at the moment, and don't think he fits with Charlie and Harry in the F50 as the third tall.
That’s fair. I don’t think he’s as far away but it’s a bit of a conundrum. Wouldn’t mind seeing the club go after another ruck that’s afl ready but at the same time there’s every chance TDK makes a mark after a big preseason.

We desperately need an AFL ready Ruck support for Pitto, thereby giving us flexibility and time to explore develop TDK correctly he’s definitely talented. Tom , Jacob, Harry and Charlie all firing makes for a formidable skilled KPP division For the 5 years.
We don’t need any of them playing support Ruck unless absolutely necessary.
I personally don't see TDK as a KPF. He doesn't have natural forward movement or craft. He can pinch hit, but don't want all three in the same forward line. Way too tall.

We’ve got such a great system for developing them, invite them to the club once every 4 years for a feel good photo shoot and then, on your way. Not dissimilar to our NGA program minus the photo shoot.

Ed should be our runner during game day.
I'm not even convinced he can get through that, let alone a few games of AFL.

The end comes quick for most. It is surprising given how amazing his preparation has been over the journey but soft tissue after soft tissue spells the end, IMO.

This is clearly the difference that splits the very good teams.. If you look at Geelong.. Everyone talks Cameron, Selwood, Dangerfield.. Yet this year they have 3 players (Stewart, Stengle & Blicavs) who are All Australian which they basically got for free by identifying them, as role players, put them into a system and made them stars.. Finding a few diamonds in the rough is what separates the top teams from the mediocre.. Its easy to pick stars with top picks, but doing it with picks in the 40+ and hitting regularly takes skill.

But it's so predictable. His brand would benefit from a bit of humility.

He (quite reasonably) critiques the development environment at CFC during Stocker's time.

If only the list manager of 4 years (at the time) had insight into the club's shortcomings. That LM could then have tailored his recruiting criteria to allow for that.

Big strides taken by draftees and fringe players this year - time for the club to back it's people

Which fringe players that have come through the Carlton system have 'developed' Motlop came on, but that appears a case of raw talent rather than development. Other than that could almost guarantee our top 10 in the BNF will be made up of first round picks or players brought in from other clubs.. JSOS the exception.

At a guess our BNF
1. Cripps
2. Saad
3. Walsh
4. Charlie
5. Weiters
6. JSOS
7. Doc
8. Hewett
9. Kennedy
10. Cerra

Abby McKay and JSOS apart I've been waiting for the great 80s and 90s teams to give us second and third gen players.

What happened to Parkos teams? Some kind of pact with the devil?

Can't have it both ways, we've squandered plenty with raw talent so have to give credit where it's due when talent is converted to output. I'd argue that Motlop and Durdin are both on track as a long term forward duo and LOB Cottrell Setterfied Boyd Young have all either established themselves or turned their careers around under the new regime

I'm happier with Austin in charge of finding players - than SOS's absolute fail with high pick mids generally - seriously biased to flaky skinny runts - which he tried to fix with Stocker and Kemp - the only wins so far are Kennedy and maybe if we ever see it a fit Cuningham.

I don't like Setterfield because he never wins the hard ball or an open field contest - Cottrell and LoB? marking time - no accident the only revealed trade target ( so far) is a flanker - Cerra and Hewett's recruitment last year pretty much told you everything you needed to know about where Dow was rated internally - couldn't get a run with all of Walsh/Kennedy and Hewett out at the same time....

SPS? no different at WC than at Carlton - man child at Schoolboy level syndrome and stopped growing or getting any faster despite FT AFL environment. Philp - I dont think so...

Fingers crossed Carroll ( who at least shows signs) and Kemp who I rate we need them coming through.

Austin needs to find some mids..

Yup agree with you and succinctly laid out, Curly Jr. is doing OK and im happy with recruiting direction, just needs time , things were left in just a little disarray,
