On this basis I have very little interest in Stewart. It seems to me that he is at best likely to be an adequate KPF with no hope of becoming a star. We already have a whole heap of KPFs who have no hope of becoming a star (Gorringe, Jones, Caz, Jaksch) and only one, McKay, or possibly two if C Curnow became big enough (though I think his talents are more likely elsewhere as an attacking Bont-like mid), with star potential as KPFs (SOJ being a medium).
Whilst Stewart might be of value to the team next year I would prefer us to use his spot on the list to try and pick a KPF who has the potential to be a star, even if it happens the kid never plays a senior game. That, among other reasons, was why I was so dirty on giving up pick 7 (2m Peter being touted to still be available) for KJ (who then was going to be at best useful) and BB. To those who say "pick X that we traded for Stewart was never going to give us a KPF" the only response is "Wrong". Each draft is littered with late-pick players, including KPFs, who weren't considered much at the time but subsequently prove different (think Ben Brown, pick 47 in 2013.
We've lost Jamo and Foster. Levi, LJ, KJ and Gorringe will well and truly be on the chopping block next year. If we can get Stewart (and cheap), who's young and shown potential at the highest level, we absolutely should get him. He fills a desperately needed depth requirement and could possibly become a best 22 player. Also, a deal to get him is unlikely to compromise our ability to pick and develop a KPF early or late in the draft. A deal for Stewart won't compromise our ability to do both.

The KISS approach works for me.

More kids via the draft, less recycled battlers from other clubs like Tutt 'N' Jones.

The Doggies are reaping the rewards of going Go to Whoa since 2016 using this approach, whereas Richmond by comparison have stagnated by recruiting putrid rejects from other clubs, Tay Tay Hunt, Moore, Chaplin, Townsend etc

Ideally i'd like our next Premiership 22 to have at least 16 players we drafted and developed.

Griffen, Cooney, Lake, Ward, Higgins, Jones, Tutt - a list including a BnF, Captain, and Brownlow medallist - all let go for mostly top end draft picks.

For the record, the Dogs traded pick 26 to Essendon in 2013 for Crameri. The Dons used it on Zach Merrett.

Just saying.

Exactly. We needed to do it a bit for extra depth (to plug a gap in poor recruiting). We now need to be trading players out for picks, not the other way around.

I'll make an exception for Marchbank. He's effectively a bonus first round pick for the price of a second roudner.

2015: 15 player movement. Intake=

7 players via drafts
7 players via trade/dfa - 20-23 year olds.
1 international rookie.

2016: 12-13 players to be moved on. Intake=

6 players via drafts
6 players via trade/dfa - 20-23 year olds.
1 international rookie - maybe.

2017: 10 players to be moved on. Intake=

6 players via drafts
3 players via trade/dfa - 20-23 year olds/
1 big ticket Free Agent.

I think a lot will depend on how the classes of 2015 & 2016 pan out.
If the progress is as the club will have wanted, there's no reason why not go for a big ticket item in 2017
That player will have several years to be a part of the growth within the club.
2018 = rinse & repeat 2017 along with getting Ben Silvagni on the cheap.

Option 2, which is what we're already doing is the option I prefer. Very Hawthorn like in my opinion, and the rewards are pretty sweet if it works. Unfortunately looks like it will be too late to get Simo anymore success, but there's a chance we could be in the finals when Murph and Gibbs are getting on in age, and it would be pretty sweet to see success for them.

In saying that, in sport things don't always go to plan and you're forced to move people on or they leave the club unexpectedly. If we have to get rid of a veteran or they decide to move on, it isn't going to be the worst thing in the world. Everybody was claiming the Bulldogs were in complete shambles after Griffin left, and yet almost a year later they were in the finals, and two years later they're in a grand final.

He will be 23 next season. He played one game in 2016 and was useless in a losing side to Melbourne. His NEAFL form has been underwhelming. Sure he kicked a bag of 8.3 one week, but there are too many comments like "Disappointing outing. No impact on the contest in front half." to think he is anything other than a good NEAFL player, most of the time. If that is "potential at the highest level" then I reckon Foster, Levi, LJ, KJ and Gorringe have it in spades. Wouldn't recruiting Stewart then be just recruiting like for like a little too closely? How about an up-grade?

This is more about list development but why can't we get our ex champions back to help with the kids. My example is why ffs is Diesel helping Merrett?

Our new whole of club philosophy should extend to all areas past and present.
we may have become a little gun-shy of criticism suggesting we were too internal with our staffing and coaching arrangements - we are nothing like that now and if diesel was acceptable to advise C. Judd 3 Votes then I'm tipping he might still have a role to play at PP

I hope so.

Geez nearly 2 weeks I waited for that reply...sheesh.

Diesel was a star and his assistance to Judd and Merrett has been acknowledged by both. That said, the game has changed in the past 20 years. Those changes mean there are demands on midfielders that didn't exist so much when Diesel was playing. Our players already have a whole heap of specialist coaches to instruct them on a range of things they must learn to do. I would expect Bolton would not want HIS game-plan being interfered with by a player who has gone to say Diesel, learnt a tactic for dropping a tag, then adopted it only to discover it put a big whole in the on-field structure.

So sure, when a player really understands his role then the outside expert might be a useful source. There are a number of people (Juddy himself) who do provide 1 on 1 assistance to some of our midfield (Cripps). But unless the outside expert actually understands the game-plan (and the player's role in it), the advice could be just counter-productive for the team. Merrett worked in part because Ess didn't have much of a game plan, for obvious reasons.

True, you'd get twelve weeks for using Diesel's method these days.

I agree we need to go to the draft to find kids who can be A graders instead of trading in B Graders to fill a role.

Just hope we can get the high picks without destroying our core (Cripps).

If we can load up enough quality kids this year and next, we can position ourselves to move up the ladder and become an attractive club to come to for some out of contract/FA stars. Should have the cash in about 2018+ to make a huge run at some jets to finish off the list and contend.
