It's hard to know what he's on. He was less than $550k previously (though who knows how much less) and presumably there was some level of pay cut involved in getting the extra year. He had been dropped both the previous years, so you can't imagine a pay rise.

If he's on $500k, we might pay $125k of that to get the list spot back.

I'd be happy to pay 450 of it if we freed up a list spot

Perhaps, but theres a good chance theyll all be in the same position this time next year.
Probably.

However it would be poor management to delist both without giving them proper opportunities at AFL level.

Dowling was a strong performer in 2024, and is in ripping form at SANFL level.

Edwards was a high draft pick, hasn’t done a lot wrong at SANFL level, showed plenty in the St Kilda game and was somewhat of a scapegoat for the Brisbane loss.

I don’t see what Drury has really done to leapfrog those.

The original post was saying there’s no harm in selecting him for 6 months. I’m saying that the harm is if we do that, and give him the games that otherwise would go to Billy or Charlie, we’ve effectively ruined their chance of becoming solid contributors for us at AFL level.

If the rumours of the big offers to Amartey and King are true we are going to need an absolute war chest for Thilthorpe. He won't leave and will probably take unders but even that will be huge.

Throw in Bailey and the clubs coming for Worrell and Rachele before the end of their contracts and I think we will probably have to let a few go that ideally we would of kept

But they’re signed on long term deals for a reason. We have to let them go, those players have given up the flexibility for the security of a long term deal.

Tom Rehn mentioned this morning Merrett will want out again and could want out of Victoria.
Even if he was wanting to come here, I cant imagine we would want to be giving up (at least) 2 first rounders for Zac who turns 32 next year. Would prefer Neale (which I assumed we had little chance of obtaining but now re-evaluating this) at no cost as he is UFA than paying 2 first rounders for a guy who is only 2 years younger.

Even Neale got DESTYROYED in some of the running by Cats 'Irish Daicos' the other night and thats only going to get worse over coming years

Managers pressure clubs all the time to renegotiate. Given his improvement and the clubs coming for him Rachele will definitely want to renegotiate his deal.

Was he? There’s no way ROB was on less than $550k

Don't want to trade out of this draft if we are a chance at Edwards, Herbert or Drever we need to stay in it

I would try going 2027 + 2028 1st with a future 3rd coming back

Next years draft is compromised and if we push for a flag then 2028 pick will be junk

Gives us something like

Draft : 1 of Kodah Edwards, Ethan Herbert or Ethan Drever

Trade/FA: Bailey and Merrett

Out:

2027 + 2028 1st and we are gaining 2 A grade Elite players and a gun junior

100% re protecting this years picks. Do you think most teams will have a similar strategy re wanting picks IN this years draft though and OUT of the next 2? Thats my gut feel. Assuming we say finish 7th (which is where our flag odds are now) sounds like Edwards will already be gone in the draft but we would be a decent chance for the other boys.

By trading 2027 and 2028 firsts out though it does mean we have little draft assets in case we have another go at NWM (which was indicated to me last year that we will) at the end of 2027. Most likely Nas probably extends again with Saints till end of 2029 when he becomes a RFA.

Lachie Neale 900k next contract according to SEN. Sounds broadly what I would have thought but I would only offer a 2 year contract at his age and will be interesting to see how he finishes the year. Has been very good so far this year averaging over 30 a game (higher levels than the last 5-6 years)

IF we can get Neale for nothing then sure do that instead of paying the collateral for Merrett
I just think he will end up at WCE to be closer to his kids

Injury and concussion are concerns, but it does seem odd they've not locked him away
Geez they have had both bad luck (Wardlaws injuries) and also multiple shocking draft choices in recent years (Phillips at pick 3 in 2020 and Duursma pick 4 in 2023 when Curtin was interviewed the day before the draft by Clarko so obviously being strongly considered AND The Wizard were both still abailable)

With the amount of high level picks they've had, it shows you how poor that club has been.

Picking JHF was the "right" call given he was the best kid in that draft but he was never staying.

I have a consipracy theory re JHF - just my own views - that JHF always wanted to end up at Power (obviously changed his surname around the time he was drafted to his step dads, ex Power players Fabian Francis).

And his BEST chance was actually getting Kangas to draft him and not have them consider the Crows strong offer of 3 x first rounders (with a second coming back) and then do a runner after a short amount of time. So he played along feigning affection towards joining Kangas and that certainly changed pretty fast

ps agree he was a stand out #1 at the time, but geez looking back what a huge amount of quality at the top in 2021
