I think I agree with this. Especially in the history of the Adelaide Crows.

Mark Mickan was a mature ruck from Brisbane Bears
Shaun Rhen didn’t play until he was 22/23, same as David Pittman.
Rhett Biglands, Matthew Clarke and Sam Jacobs were all mature players recruited to play as our number 1 ruck.

Laurence Angwin and John Meesen were tried and failed as teenagers. Ivan Maria could be the player who breaks the rule, but he didn’t play his best footy until he was in his mid 20’s with Richmond.

Even McAndrews was 23/24 before playing as a main ruck.

I’m sure many clubs have chucked teenage ruckman into the role with success, but this theory stands up if you look at our history.
Rehnny was born in 1971. He was 19 when he played his first AFL game. By 1992 he was number one ruck. Pitto was born in 1969 drafted by Essendon as an 20 year old in 1989 but stayed at Norwood where Crows picked him up. Was playing non stop in his second year in 1993 all the way to his retirement in 1999.

The new ruck rules will make it easier for young tall athletic ruckmen, with the move away from it being a body on body strength contest. It is very likely more young rucks will play AFL much earlier.

Rhen played 6 games as a 20 year old, 20 games as a 21 year old. All Australian as a 23 year old.

Pittman was 23 when he played his first game with the crows in 1992.

Correct. Rehnny was played his first game not long before his 20th birthday. Pitto had three years of SANFL league footy under his belt leading Norwoods rucks from 1989-1991.

I'd like to move ROB on too. I can see him requesting a trade, and the club being open to it. I just can't see him finding a buyer.

He's a 31yo (or will be before trade week), who has been rendered obsolete by the AFL's rule changes. He's not as tall as many modern ruckmen, and his inability to jump over a tissue paper means his days in the centre square are now (mostly) behind him.
Our best hope of moving him on is probably Tasmania in 12 months time.

Ruckman play their best footy around their 4th or 5th year on the list. Around 23

For those that want to move ROB on, why? What's your plan if McAndrew gets injured? We don't need many list changes, we're already very young and if we stop getting injuries we'll have some very talented and deserving youth not getting games as it is.

We draft Tom Scully from West Adelaide, or we trade for Alex Dodson from St Kilda, play Riley Thrilthorp as a ruck, Harry Boyd.

Just to name a few who can play as back up ruck.

Get rid of his $700k salary and find another McAndrew to take his place as a backup

I see you haven't watched ROB play

We're not getting rid of his salary, even if he does get traded. No way we're not asked to pay the bulk of his salary, as one of the trade conditions imposed by the club taking him. We won't be paying the full $700K (or whatever it is), but we'll be paying the bulk of it.

That's eight players out, seven on the senior list.

I can't see the club taking six players at the drafts after factoring in your trades

Minimum draft picks, it’ll be 2 or 3, maybe even 1 if we’ve got 2 rookies to upgrade. Depends on trades and what we can do with incoming picks.

For the last few years it was "Keep Tex he has so much to teach" and the "when Tex isn't in the side, we struggle to put up a winning score, Filthy and Fog aren't ready".

Now that we are putting up winning scores and applying league leading pressure, the group think is "we still need Tex" when facts clearly show we don't.

We need to be a strong club this year, we can't leave the decision up to Tex, we need to make a clear decision either way on contracts.

Even a club as historically weak as us don’t leave it up to the player. It’s their choice when we are happy for them to play on. Thommo never wanted to retire and nor did Sloane or Talia or Lynch or Douglas. I know Tex stands above those, but it’s no different. He’s already not been selected when available once and he’s only going to deteriorate further as the season wears on.

That said, there’s a long list of uncontracted players and he’s already played SANFL, so maybe he’s happy for a Thommo SANFL finish to his career before moving onto his next phase. They’d probably allow that. But based on the year so far, this is his final year of being a selectable AFL player. And that’s up for discussion this week if TT still isn’t fully second rucking. Which I expect he will be, so he’s covered for now.

Last year there were:
34 players traded
7 signed as FA
27 players traded
60 players selected in the ND
1 player selected in the PSD
15 players selected in the RD (most were re-draftings)
18 players selected in the MSD
15 players pre-selected ahead of the RD (including both Cat A & B)
17 players signed during the PSSP

That's a total of 194 list changes across the league, or an average of 10.8 per club.

The maths is complicated by the fact that MSD picks can be used to replace players who are on the Inactive List, but the point remains that 8 list changes is not unusual - in fact it's damn close to the AFL competition average.

Note that 2025 was seen as having a weaker than normal draft (Port opted not to draft any players at all in the ND). If anything the draft numbers quoted above are below the long-term average.

Did you duplicate 7 FA and 27 traded to get 34 traded?
