Sholl should never be behind Cook. He is twice the player. Nankervis isnt setting the world on fire in the SANFL either. Last week he had 12 touches and one tackle. Sholl 17 and 5 tackles.

I do agree that we should have Cook lower in the depth chart. That said, Sholl also showed this year that he couldn't really handle the change in style with our wing play.

Whilst this is injury dependant (seeing there is no way in hell that we should alter anything structurally), I would like to see Nank get a shot at the wing if either Cummings/Curtin went down. Though, I suspect we'll have earmarked Draper for it next year.

Bit of a left field one... Wonder if we could make a play for Kyle Langford? Quality third tall that slots nicely into our forward mix as a Tex replacement IMO. Been riddled with injuries the last couple years, but there's night and day difference between our S&C department and Essendon's, and I think Langford would realise this. I also don't think Essendon would be particularly desperate to hold onto him: they've got Wright, Caddy, Edwards, Gerreyn, May and now McMahon as key forward options.

I would, but maybe end of 2026. Bigger fish to fry hopefully.

I've been thinking this very same thing. Reckon he'd be gettable given Essendon have committed to a full rebuild, they're oversubscribed for medium forwards, and he's pretty much their only one who'd get anything in a trade.

Not sure how much Essendon would want for him. 29 at the start of next year and contracted to 2027. That's second rounder territory but I highly doubt they accept that

Better depth than Burgess

Wouldnt mind making a late trade for Chesser from the Eagles. Showed yesterday he has potential, again I think our high performance team could address his fitness issues (foot problem wasnt it?), he is friend with Soligo and Rach, and wouldnt cost us much. Replace Schoenberg wit Chesser basically as he has more of an upside.

And Nick Murray and Sam Berry for what it's worth.

Here’s some players I think we should be sniffing around this offseason. Realistically we will only be able to acquire between 1 and 3 players via FA/trade combined, but I’m hoping they come from this list:

1) NWM - doesn’t require any explanation. We’re probably only a 5% chance here, but I’d go all in and be willing to part with a huge war chest of assets to get him. A generational talent and would be the most perfect list fit imaginable for us, as he can split time between half back, where Smith is retiring, Laird is well past his prime, Hinge is regressing, and neither of Ryan or Edwards have been able to break through for even a debut game to this point. Then there’s the midfield, where Crouch is likely out of the mix, Berry is always going to be limited, Draper looks like a bit of a slow burn, Peatling is a scrappy type who needs class around him, Rankine isn’t suited to a full time mid role, Dawson (floating into defense) and Curtin (wing) need to split time with other vital team roles, Dowling rightly or wrongly can’t break in, Edwards is no longer seen as having a future as an AFL mid by our club, and Schoenberg is being delisted. Sadly, it still very much looks like it’s Port or the Saints here.

2) Callum Ah Chee - this one has been floated as almost “confirmed” in some circles. I’ll believe that when I see it, but a small-medium forward of this quality is certainly a need for us, and would largely eliminate the need to ever give games to the likes of Murphy and Pedlar (ie flogging dead horses), whilst possibly freeing up Taylor to play a different role. Proven finals performer too which is also a key need for our list. Very keen. Assuming Brisbane aren’t keen on giving Lachie Sholl a lifeline, I’d assume this trade costs us maybe picks 42 and 47 in 2025, plus a third rounder in 2026, with Ah Chee and Pick 62 coming back our way. Whatever we get for Sholl (which won’t be much) if he requests a trade could also be chucked in here.

3) A ruckman that isn’t a dinosaur and isn’t Sam Draper - no offence to Sam, but tying up big dollars on this list slot after re-signing ROB would be objectively stupid, regardless of the likelihood of the sub being scrapped. There’s a wide array of names “available” here, not limited to Reeves, Reidy, Verrall, Bryan, Knobel. I wouldn’t be opposed to plucking one out of the SANFL or VFL either. I’m not seeing the point in drafting an 18 year old ruck, especially in a draft year where there’s very few, if any, standout ruck prospects. A ruck of some description is a must add for our list though.

4) Christian Petracca - it’s hard to imagine him leaving Vic, but it’s pretty blatant that Petracca needs a change of scenery, and personally I can’t think of a list that suits him better than ours. The worst his manager can do is say “nope, he’s not interested in moving to SA”. The question must be asked and the Dees need to clear up some salary cap space so they’d pay some of his contract if he moves on. Wonder how much he misses ANB…

5) Malcolm Rosas - if we don’t get Ah Chee, then Rosas is a small forward I would be very interested in offering a rookie contract to. Genuine speed and skill. Clearly not in Hardwick’s good books so a change of scenery looks like the best thing for all parties. Out of contract, and looks like being delisted.

6) Jeremy Sharp - out of favour at Freo and a FA. I’ve always been a fan but I suspect there must be some “team defense” things where he lacks because it doesn’t really make sense that he’s struggling to get games over some of the other trash the Dockers trot out on a wing at times.

7) Charlie Spargo - here’s another free agent who I think could benefit from a change of scenery. Have always liked Spargo as a versatile small who could play a number of roles. Underrated type. Again, ANB may be part of the lure.

8) Tyler Sonsie - just seems like he doesn’t quite fit into Yze’s plans at Richmond. A guy who was quite often compared to Rachele during their draft year, and I think would benefit from being in our system. The fact that he’s still out of contract tells you all you need to know about how his relationship with Richmond is going.

9) Campbell Chesser - hey there Campbell, meet Darren Burgess. There’s a player here, it’s just a matter of getting his body right, and if that possible, Burgess is probably the guy to do it. Out of contract. Cheap. Easily worth a roster spot over the likes of Sholl, Jones and co.

10) Will Lorenz - if Port don’t value this guy enough to give him another deal, we’ll gladly take him. He’s better than 25 of the players on their list, and is AFL quality in an area we are pretty sparse in.

Draft:
Assuming we don’t have an opportunity to sell the draft farm to get NWM, I would be targeting any of the following for our list (hopefully 2 of the list below, but realistically, 1 would be great):

  • S Cumming (would require trading up - ends up a top 6 player from this draft IMO)
  • M Marsh (would require trading up - with Tex retiring and Welsh looking like a delistee in 14 months, this is a great fit)
  • J Phillipou (might require trading up - huge potential here, and hidden from recruiters by injuries)
  • L Dovaston (might require trading up - best small forward in the draft)
  • J Farrow (might require trading up - classy unit)
  • H Barker (might require trading up - big potential on a wing)
  • F Rodriguez (seems to have regressed this season which is never a good sign, but still needs to be considered as a genuine dual sided mid)
  • T Byrne (2nd best small forward in the class)
  • M LeRay (nice outside player from SA)
  • B Ooudshoorn-Bennier (high upside mid-fwd from SA)

And finally, who gets cut from the list to make room for some of the above?

Delist:
K Gallagher (Cat B)
K Strachan (inactive)
H Schoenberg (Cat A)
C Burgess (Cat A)
L Murphy (Senior)
M Crouch (Senior) - some chance that a club takes him as FA, but either way I don’t think he’s at the AFC in 2026
H Bond (Senior)*

Retire:
B Smith (Senior)

Trade:
L Sholl (Senior)

* redraft Bond onto Cat A rookie list

= 5 senior and 1 rookie A slots open

Fill 2 of the senior list spots with 1 FA and 1 trade acquisition.

Fill remaining 3 senior spots with 3 ND picks.

Fill remaining rookie A slot with delisted FA to address list need (eg if neither of the players acquired via trade or FA are a ruckman, we add a ruck here), or take a high risk high reward undrafted kid.

Consider Cat B options, including Mitch Stevens as potentially undrafted father son.

If he gets himself fully fit and healthy I think he would slot in on a wing, good pace and an elite kick.
If we’re looking at Curtin as a mid eventually, it’d be a shrewd pickup. Looked really solid in the first half against us

I’d also look at Beecken from Brisbane, their fans seem to think he should’ve already gotten an opportunity

Cal Wilkie I think should also be added to that list. If he is truly disgruntled, right time to get into his ear about a move.

I'd happily be trying to steal away Sam Flanders - I think he should be a key part of a midfield, and Gold Coast is absolutely stacked with mids.
Have wanted this guy for a few years. He was carrying the GC midfield for a couple of seasons while Anderson and Rowell were developing. Would be our 2nd best mid behind Dawson.

Would be a great get Flanders add to the youth, wouldn’t cost loads either but would have to use the first in the deal I would say. Maybe get a pick back and Flanders.

Not against it, but it’s potentially a significant cap hit and will cost picks, for a position we have good quality and depth in.

Are we all still keen on Phillipou? I think we should put a nice offer to him and tell him how Burgess will sort out his leg issues.

He cant be happy at St Kilda, and he is the type of player we need in the midfield.
If we arnt a shot at Nas, I would throw a couple of firsts to get him here.
Hes a bit of a Figjam I have heard, but he could be another Clarry if he puts it all together.
