Neale just smacked our team this week, so clearly he'd be our best mid.

Will he crack on though, or is he in decline? Will he decline to the point where he's not that good? Probably not, I'd say he's worth it on a short deal.
If you think he makes the difference between a good midfield (with Bailey) and a premiership midfield, then you go and get him.

If Bailey doesnt come and we are left with the same parts we have again, then dont bother.

Midfielder Sam Marshall has to be genuine target for us, currently not in Brisbane's best side and not interested in accepting the 1 year deal they have on the table. Although he was in the Brisbane Academy he played most of his junior footy in Melbourne for the Sandringham Dragons and Melbourne Grammar in the APS system. Only just turned 20 and going to find it hard getting a midfield gig any time soon at Brisbane.

Might prefer to move to a Melbourne club given his time there but $$$$'s might turn his head?

I thought he would have declined a lot by now, but he doesn't look to be doing that. Slightly below his absolute best, but still very very good.

For 2-3 years, he could easily play in our midfield. Throw Neale and Bailey (and a fit Curtin) into our midfield mix, then (hopefully) a decent coaching panel, and we are right in the window.

Why they only offering 1 year? Seems odd for a guy who played in their premiership

Gettable saying that Keane might look to move again. Dogs a chance? Plus Bailey wants to stay but needs more cash. Could be a shocker of an offseason. Happy to let Keane leave if we keep butts and get overs for him. Just they won’t be able to pay overs if they take on Butters.
Keane is still contracted, if he want to leave for Victoria then he can go to club who will offer him a good pick. Doesn't have to be the Bulldogs.

Long term Salary cap issues fitting in and retaining all their young guns obviously.

But 1 year? I’m sure they haven’t managed their list that badly
Well he's already contracted for 2027 and the one year extension is what they're offering and he's made it clear he wants better regards their offer. They have Kai Lohmann OOC 2027, Keideen Coleman OOC 2027, Logan Morris OOC 2027, Zac Bailey OOC 2026, Lachie Neale OOC 2026, James Tunstill OOC 2026, Darcy Dardiner OOC 2026, Connor McJenna OOC 2026 etc

They also look to have another 1st rounder this year in Caylen Murray, Matthew Owen another on the rise, Jethro Grills and Cooper Hodge who has a choice between the Hawks as a father/son or the Lions via their Academy....A;; legitimate draft chances. Both Murray and Owen All Australians at the 2024 U16's championships.

Theyve got kids coming through every year, probably banking on the tact theyll have more success and theyll give him more cash later

They also may be prepping for an increased offer to Bailey

If they really rate him, he’s getting more than 1 year.

They also have midfielder Daniel Annable pick 6 in last year's draft coming through, they can only play so many midfielders every week.

Edit

btw if you're unaware both the Lions Academy 2026 draftees Caylen Murray and Matthew Owen are midfielders too

I get all that, maybe they don’t rate him as highly hence why he’s only been offered one year, if they did surely you agree they’d offer him more to lock him away

I'd suggest it's more a financial/salary cap issue than any lack of talent because Sam has plenty of that.

Have you ever really focused on him when he has played and look at the Lions ridiculous midfield depth with more on the way ftom last year's draft and this year's draft. A lot of that via F/S and Academy high end midfield talent

Don’t listen to this week’s Gettable unless you want to feel even more depressed about our team. :drunk:
If we want a good team, we have to develop our own players from the draft

That's always been the case based on where the club is located

The problem is we absolutely SUCK at this. We should not be needing to trade in midfielders with the amount of (very good) draft picks we have spent on midfielders

Rachele, Curtin, Draper and Soligo should be a top 6 midfield on talent alone.
But we have no idea how to develop them so its hopeless.

Wasn’t it last week or the week before that Gettable was saying the exact opposite that his number 1 choice is Adelaide?

I think most of those journalists are just guessing to get people listening.

The continual reappointing of Nicks fits the AFC definition of insanity

"Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results"

I thought the definition of insanity was jamming your old fella in a pear and then walking down the street.

Wait, no, that is the definition of being deep in despair
