3) Mark McGough - I think he has real talent. 20 years ago he would have been a star of the game. He is a ball magnet because he has a football brain, unfortunately he is slow. His lack of speed means that he is under pressure almost immediately upon getting the ball. His disposal suffers from the pressure. He is rarely successful chasing a player down (also because of his speed) and this sometimes results in his failure to try - something that needs to be addressed because referred pressure is often enough to reduce the effectiveness of the opposition's disposal.

What do you do with a player like that? He could be great. As he is, he still gets his hands on the pill more than enough to earn his keep, but his disposal lets him down, lets the team down. Can he learn, like Powell did, to find other ways to be effective? McGough is a lovely size for a midfielder, a similar height to Lenny Hayes. Maybe if he could build his body up to Lenny's size he could use strength where speed fails him. I don't know, I suppose it's up to the new coach.

exactly!

But if your going to draft a guy when this information is readily known...play him when the time comes....dont just let him run in the seconds....

Murray has to be gone - bad luck, bad choice - Fiora is a receiver (new terminology a go-to-player or a wide option) maybe lucky, Peckett, Powell, & (probably) Thompsen retired, maybe Raymond or Sweeney, etc have not stepped up - otherwise not too much jiggling.

Excuse me gents - I think you put too much in what I wrote not what I meant:o

I didn't mean to name Raymond or Sweeney directly I meant to say "maybe one of the younger "project" players who have not stepped up.

Beveridge does have reputation of picking some left field choices which have to be considered calculated risks - by that criteria obviously some will work and some won't.

I do hope I have gone some way in winning back my maturity and correcting my obvious display of stupidity. :D

That's 36 listed players and 3 rookies.

List Lodgement One - 2pm Tuesday October 31, 2006.
The list can have a maximum of 35 players, Rookie Promotions, Father/Son selections, Retained (second-year) Rookies.

With 39 players (including Rookies), the list must be trimmed by at least 4 more players and could possibly see more trimmed.

Will we keep all our Rookies ?

Who will be delisted to meet these requirements ?

All clubs must take 4 rookies (some clubs can take more)

Four rookies required

Matt Burgan
Sportal for afl.com.au

All AFL clubs will be required to have a minimum of four rookie-listed players on their list from 2007 as part of the AFL's new Next generation - securing the future of Australian football package unveiled on Thursday at Telstra Dome.

Will you fit Spida in on your veterans list?

I hope not but only having to include half of his wages in our salary cap gives us a significant advantage over most clubs.

Fingers crossed one of the other 14 clubs can pick him up. As far as I'm concerned he's not welcome.

The club would be misrepresenting the fans if they were to offer Peter Everitt a contract. There are too many who recognise him for what he really is.

To enlist Everitt is to take a huge step backwards in club culture, it would also make a mockery of club recruitment policy where anyone listed must be reasonably expected to play at least 100 games for the club.

Even if Everitt were to be recruited, his inclusion would reduce space and flexibility in the cap and threaten more worthwhile player's future salaries.

We all recognise that he is a top ruckman, but he is also a first rate jerk, he was expunged from our club when we probably needed him most. Why would we do that unless he was already considered a lost cause?

Opportunity knocks for Saints
26 September 2006 Herald-Sun
Mark Stevens

Dear Rod, Right now, I can't reveal my identity. I'm still coaching in some capacity in the finals.

But gee, your list is tantalising. How often does an untried coach get this opportunity?

So I'd like to steal a march and give a quick run-down of where I reckon you're at. Don't worry, I'll be calling as soon as we're knocked out.

First, though, some negatives.

As much as the Saints are a top-eight list, your old mate Grant Thomas was right. The group is a little overrated.

The top 10 players are as good as any, but depth is a concern.

They say you're only as good as your bottom six and, at times, you were exposed in that area this year.

I would be doing everything in my power to get the Clarke brothers right over summer. Herbal remedies, witch doctors ... anything.

They are top-10 draft picks, but they are so frustratingly fragile.

Get them on the park for 18-plus games each next year and the upside is massive. They have pace and flair, and that's what you desperately need coming off half-back.

There's been plenty of talk about ruckmen out there, and I agree in some respects. But remember, you have one sitting there in Justin Koschitzke. Don't panic.

If you can't land a ruckman, give big Barry Brooks a crack as well. He looked OK at the Gabba.

I'm not sure where he stands, though. Was the coaching staff just showcasing him for a possible trade when he was plucked from nowhere for Round 22?

I'm prepared to contemplate having a crack at Peter Everitt, but that would be a huge gamble and probably a backward step considering your old mate Thommo has built a good culture at the club. But please under no circumstances give away a first or second-round pick for him.

I also like the look of that John Meesen in Adelaide, maybe it's time for another brave raid across the border. Maybe we can send Fiora and a later pick back home to Adelaide in return.

You ran at Stawell, Rod. You know all about pace. I reckon you need some more of that, too.

Go to the draft and pick up quick kids.

Don't trade away early choices.

It's time to stock up again on talent, but the focus must be fleet-footed midfielders.

Jason Gram is still learning and has a way to go, but he stands out like a beacon. Three more of his ilk would be nice.

At least Leigh Montagna showed significant improvement, too.

Aaron Fiora can run and bounce it. He could be trade bait, but I've got a hunch I can transform him. Not all is lost.

Play Andrew McQualter in Round1 and keep him in the team. He's small, but the kid's tough. The supporters see him as a mini-Harvey. Give them hope.

You don't need to worry about the stars.

I'd be itching to get my hands on a fit Luke Ball ... and Nick Riewoldt's efforts were underrated this year.

Lenny Hayes coming back will ease the pressure on Nick Dal Santo, even if it will be a big ask for Hayes to completely recapture his best in 2007.

God, I hope Maxie Hudghton can keep it up. The guy's a marvel. Stiff not to be All-Australian.

But, with Matt Maguire no certainty to start the year, he needs help.

I've got Luke Penny's number. I'd be happy to give him a try. Reckon you've missed his ability to plonk himself on a ``gorilla'' and do a job.

Love the Fisher boys. No issue there. Leigh will only get better.

Someone capable of playing on dangerous small forwards would be nice though.

Too much is asked of Stevie Baker, who, by the way, would be one of my first picked.

Big Fraser Gehrig is still capable of kicking 60-plus goals.

I'd be finding the best specialist on earth to help out Aaron Hamill.

He wasn't right for the finals, but you are so much better when he is terrorising opponents.

And Rod, I reckon it's time to get Brendon Goddard into more dangerous spots. The guy's ready.

Speak soon.

Yours in confidence, The Phantom Coach

Leigh Fisher is an automatic selection for a number of reasons. Reliable defender, always makes his man accountable and has great skill and football knowledge. Is a good runner and fits in very nicely to the St. Kilda defensive set-up along with namesake Sam. Is only 21 and the team needs to promote these young guns that will definatly be stars in years to come.

Andrew Thompson is one of the Saints favourite sons, he is a hard player, always puts his body first, and has good skills on occasion. But personally, at his age, I believe the Saints would be better off playing younger blokes such as Andrew McQualter and Raphael Clarke. McQualter has a bit of pace and his body will grow and suit to the level of AFL. He needs to be a player we can build with as well as Leigh Montagna to inject pace into the midfield. A young McQualter with 22 games of experiance in '07 with the likes of Hayes, Harvey, Ball, Dal Santo, Milne, Montagna, Fiora and possibly Gram, will be a telling future investment.

Aaron Fiora should definatly stay at the club and should definatly play more games in 2007. He hasn't lived up to #3 pick in the 2000(?) draft, and I'd say he would be the first to admit it. But he may be a late blossom and may absolutley be a player a good coach could turn into a superstar. Give Fiora the chance. Give him the chance to prove he is a star and if it pays off, and in my opinion it just may, all of a sudden the Saints have a dynamic, dangerous, fast and explosive addition to the side. Has great skill and is definatly one of the best left foot kicks in the game.

From my reckoning thats 37 players (assuming that the two older rookies have been delisted).

34 main list players
2 veteran listed players
1 rookie

We need to delist at least 1 more player or even 2. Surely, they are not going to pass pick 59 as Pick 9 and Pick 27 will fill our remaining two spots. Who will it be?

I believe we have fulfilled our list requirements.

34 main list players, 1 second year rookie = 35 players + 2 Veterans (outside list)

From the AFLPA CBA document

13. VETERANS LIST
13.1 (a) An AFL Club may nominate for each AFL Season up to two eligible Players to be transferred from its Primary List to the Veterans List and/or any number of eligible Players to be classified as a veteran on its Primary List, provided the transfer or classification occurs no later than two weeks after the Pre-Season Draft prior to the relevant AFL Season.
(b) An AFL Club which classifies a Player on its Primary List as a veteran, may, at a later stage, but no later than two weeks after the Pre-Season Draft prior to the relevant AFL Season, transfer the Player to the AFL Club’s Veterans List.
(c) A Player who is transferred to the AFL Club’s Veterans List can only be transferred back to the Primary List of the AFL Club between the end of an AFL Season and two weeks after the Pre-Season Draft prior to the next AFL Season and provided that Player remains classified as a veteran on the Primary List.
(d) A Player that is classified as a veteran on the Primary List must remain classified as a Veteran until that Player leaves the Club or is transferred to the Veterans List.

13.2 A Player is eligible for inclusion on an AFL Club’s Veterans List or to be classified as a veteran, on the Primary List if:

14.2 The minimum number of Players on the Club’s Primary List and Veterans List combined shall be 38, save for 2004, where the minimum shall be 37.
14.3 The number of Players referred to in clause 14.1 and 14.2 shall be Players included on the AFL Club’s Primary List and Veterans List and shall be in addition to the allowable number of Rookies including eligible Rookies as defined in the Rules. The maximum number of Rookies and Players on the Primary List shall be in accordance with Schedule C.
14.4 There shall be a limit of two Players that may be placed on a Club’s Veterans List with no limit on the number of Players that may be classified as veterans on the AFL Club’s Primary List.
14.5 An AFL Club is eligible to nominate a Rookie Player as being eligible for senior selection if it has 38 Players on its Primary List not including Veterans at the conclusion of the Pre-Season Draft and it otherwise satisfies the requirements of this clause 14.
14.6 An AFL Club which is eligible to nominate a Rookie Player pursuant to clause 14.5 may:
(a) where the AFL Club has nominated one Player on its Veterans List, nominate one Player from its Rookie List as being available for selection by that AFL Club for AFL Premiership Season Matches and AFL Finals Series Matches; and
(b) where the AFL Club has not nominated a Player on its Veterans List, nominate up to two Players from its Rookie List as being available for selection by the AFL Club for AFL Premiership Season Matches and AFL Finals Series Matches.
14.7 The right of an AFL Club to nominate a Rookie Player under clause 14.6 is subject to the AFL Club demonstrating to the satisfaction of the Investigations Manager that it can accommodate within its Total Player Payments the Football Payments which must be paid to the Rookie Player as prescribed by paragraph 4 of Schedule B.
14.8 One half of the Football Payments in respect of a Rookie Player nominated under this clause 14 shall be excluded from the relevant AFL Club’s Total Player Payments.

14.10 Each AFL Club agrees to follow the procedure relating to delisting of a Player as follows:
(a) the Player after being given reasonable notice of the time, date and place of the meeting, will meet with the senior coach, football manager or other person nominated by the Club who will inform the Player, on an individual basis, that the Club has decided to delist the Player and the reasons the Club has for delisting the Player;
(b) unless otherwise agreed, details of the discussions taken place under subparagraph

(d) after the Club has advised the Player of his delisting, the Club will arrange for the Player to meet with the Club’s Player Development Manager or similar personnel as soon as practicable;
(e) the Player Development Manager will provide the Player with information regarding the career transition process that the Club has in place;
(f) AFLPA shall provide each Club with an information booklet which outlines the career transition services available to Players through the AFLPA and the Club shall pass this information onto the Player;
(g) the Player Development Manager will, with the Player’s consent,
immediately contact the nominated AFLPA Representative and inform that person of the details of the Player’s delisting;
(h) AFLPA shall encourage all delisted Players to commit to a career transition consultation with a qualified careers consultant;
(i) each Club shall arrange at its cost for a termination medical to be conducted on the Player and the Club shall provide the Player with details of the Player’s hospital and medical insurance including the name of the insurer, the level of cover and the expiry date of the policy. The Player shall be obliged to attend the medical examination at a time and place and with a doctor to be mutually agreed to between the Player and the Club and in any event as soon as practicable after the de-listing of the Player. A copy of the medical report shall be forwarded to the Player and the Club shall not release the medical report to any other person unless the Player agrees in writing or unless the Club is otherwise required to disclose the medical report to the AFL as part of the AFL’s duty of disclosure to the AFL’s insurer.

The upshot is that we can nominate that Robert Harvey, Max Hudghton and /or Andrew Thompson as veterans.
A maximum of two of these can be named as veterans outside the list.

Our list consists of :
(A) 36 main list players and however many rookies we retain or
(B) 35 main list players and 1 veteran (outside list) and however many rookies we retain or
(C) 34 main list players and 2 veterans (outside list) and however many rookies we retain

We can name just R Harvey outside the list and achieve the 35 player requirement allowing us to draft 3 players in the upcoming draft.

I think we will nominate R Harvey and M Hudghton as veterans outside the list, allowing us to recruit 4 players in the upcoming draft. If we do this we will not have room for a fifth player, nor will we have room for a pre-season draft recruit.

We will take however many rookies we retain this year and add to that to make a total of 4 rookies into next year.

All clubs must take 4 rookies (some clubs can take more)

Four rookies required

All AFL clubs will be required to have a minimum of four rookie-listed players on their list from 2007 as part of the AFL's new Next generation - securing the future of Australian football package unveiled on Thursday at Telstra Dome.
