At Laneway this year I decided to have a bit of a look at Girl Talk before heading home. I was pretty disappointed when some dude strutted out on stage and pressed a button on his Imac; cue the "performance". It didn't seem to bother the rest of the crowd, but, albeit, it was Sydney.
I made tracks not long after that, prematurely ending what was, until that point, another great day of live performances.
I guess I'm after more of an authentic concerting experience; like, at least get some turntables or synthesizers or something. To me, playing an entire show from a laptop is treating your audience with wanton disdain.
What are your thoughts?

Depends.

Ableton can do great things and quite a few big name DJs use it almost exclusively for their sets nowadays. Guys like Sasha, Hyper, BT, AVB, Daft Punk, Gabriel & Dresden, Digweed, Richie Hawtin all use it. Abletons ability to mix, edit, cur & paste etc. on the fly is what makes it attractive. And arguably, that fact can make it a more 'authentic' experience as opposed to just playing records on turntables/CDJs.

Girl Talk is a mashup artist. From what i've gathered, he alters a lot of his songs a lot on stage, though i'm skeptical how much you can improvise something like that. From what i've seen from Girl Talk gigs, it looks like great fun and wouldn't bother me. Bit hard for him to do anything else really.

from what i've heard his live sets are significantly different to his album. throwing in different songs, loops and layers all over the place

They aren't live bands.

I ctrl+f'ed live bands and the first thing that came up was blackshadows post. Unsure of the point.

does anyone here use ableton? I'm looking to purchase a new mac with ableton. Looks great.
