Personally I don't think we should read too much into the match.

I felt Lleyton played as well as he could have against Gucione's serve. Lleyton also shouldn't be too disappointed since he didn't give up any break points.

From memory last year Nadal also had problems playing against Gucione before succumbing to an injury.

If Gooch can improve on his ground strokes, I think he can be at least a top 20 prospect. With such a good serve, and steady improvement in other areas there is no reason why he can't challenge the top players in tennis.

Agree Gucione served pretty well and got alot of free points from his biggest weapon.His groundstrokes seemed to be quite solid today and maybe they will improve further if he gets the confidence to play as aggressively as he did today.As far as Hewitt goes the Australian media have to get over this fixation every year that he is a realistic chance of winning his home Grand Slam.He has got about as much chance of winning another Slam as Renee Richards has of coming out of retirement.Hewitt should think about joining the Australian cricket team as he would fit well in a team that have the same bratish unsportsmanlike qualities he does.

Jury is still out on the Gooch, once he learns how to play a few groundstokes he will be a gun.

Yes, there was really nothing in it.

Lleyton had a few break point opportunities but couldn't capitalise.

Gooch served 20 odd aces and at really important times.

During the longer rallies Lleyton tended to come out on top with Gooch spraying the ball several times with wild forehands.

However in the tiebreaks, Gucione was far more brave and went for his shots and this ultimately paid off.

Bit harsh there on Lleyton. Personally I don't really take notice of best out of 3 set matches. I find those matches inadequate, especially in the mens game where all it takes is one bad service game to lose the match. That's why grand slams which have best out of 5 sets really differentiate the better players from the rest.

I was out all day and missed the game. I originally had the duration of the play set on record to Foxtel IQ but I thought Hewitt would destroy him so I didn’t bother. I’m actually glad I didn’t bother because I wouldn’t have wanted to see the Gooch win anyway.

I was very disappointed when I heard the result. I don’t rate Guccione, not at all. His movement is ordinary, his groundstrokes, whilst powerful, are unreliable and his attitude and on court demeanor are normally pathetic. I really didn’t expect him to get close to Hewitt but the more I think about it the less disappointed I become. The Sydney International is about the only tour where he actually performs decently and when he’s serving well he can beat most entrants here. As much as I hate to admit it, Hewitt is a shadow of his former self. At his prime he was one of the best returns of serve in the business but these days he’s susceptible to the big servers and the Gooch served up a storm today. So I guess all things considered it’s no major surprise that Hewitt lost and it’s a blow to his preparation for the Australian Open.

Well he was probably only responding to journo's questions. You cannot simply take snippets from an interview and form a reliable opinion.

One thing with hewitt though, is that you know he will speak his mind, and I appreciate that moreso than the reserved responses given by players post match

Lleyton will struggle to get into the top 20 this year.

All this talk of how much Roche is taking his game to another level is bullshit. Looked like the same old Lleyton to me, and getting beaten by nobodies in Adelaide and Sydney proves this.

Weak serve, lacking penetration off the ground, too defensive and unable to take control of the match. Compared to the elite of the game these days, he hits the ball like a girl and gets wholloped off the court more often than not.

He really reminds me of Michael Chang. Both incredible athletes, both with limited games but got to #1 through tenacity, guts and speed around the court. A credit to them both, but once their athletic advantage starts to wane they are not consistently competitive.

- Gooch is very ordinary and will never rank higher than 75.
- Hewitt is also very ordinary, much more ordinary than his #21 ranking suggests, and seeing him lose to Gooch isn't really that suprising.
- Check out the player activity for Hewie over 2006 and 2007 and marvel at the duds he loses to every tournament.
- He's still a complete **** head.

Is the Vliegen game referring to the Davis Cup match, because that dosent count for points though the arguement is right. Hewitts gone as a big name player in the top 10. The situation wont change though as he is still by far our best hope of a grand slam even though that chance is about as big as an atom

I've bolded the bad inexcusable loses; the other ones he ran into either bogey players or guys on fire. I;m not sure about the Monfils match. It's not too terrible.

2008 hastn started much better- lost to Tsonga in Adelaide (losing to him on grass is one thing, losing to him at home, on hard court is another) and Guccione (who admittedly just beat Berdych- playing much better than he did against Hewitt, but still should have killed him)
