No idea about Tambling, but it had been suggested to this player that it was a standard contract at the Crows.
Incentive is the key - not penalties
Thought contracts were standard AFL contracts .......are they able to be customised club by club ??

I believe Anthony Koutoufides also had a long term contract, not 10 years but at least 5. "There was criticism that, in later years, Koutoufides did not deserve his $1 million contract, as he missed a vast number of matches due to injuries to his knee, hamstring and hand. However, much of Koutoufides' salary during the height of his career was deferred to later contracts for salary cap reasons." * Also, he signed up when Carlton where in difficulties both on and off the field helping out the club immensely. This is a case where a long term contract aided both parties

Newly drafted players on their first AFL contract are covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which standardises their terms of employment.

All other players are on contracts negotiated between their agents & the club. They still have to conform to the terms of the CBA, but there is significant scope for clauses to be added in areas not covered by the CBA.

Kouta is a classic example of a long term contract gone wrong. Perfect counter to the Lynch/Brisbane example of things going well.

Long term contracts are high risk, which is why few clubs agree to them. There is the potential for huge reward for both sides, but things can get ugly when they go wrong.

The most number of years I would offer for a contract would be 4 years. I hope we offer this length to danger which would keep him at the club until he is 29.

Didn't Capper get so e ridiculously long contract to go up to the Brisbane Bears?

Or was it Rodger Merritt?
Possibly Merritt as Leigh was talking about it.

That's right. All in all, there would have to be some incredible circumstances before I would consider giving a player a really long term contract.
