The" Horse" is now favorite for the North coaching job. interesting on Sunday that he seemed to be the one actually coaching the side and Roos was only standing up behind him. As outstanding as a coach and person that John has been it might be a blessing that he moves on. This would allow the club to bring in a fresh face straight out of the game with a few new ideas. Our whole coaching staff have been out of the game for a fair while and i believe it is time to freshen up with a couple of younger fellows on the staff who can relate to our younger list. eg someone like Adam Simpson who they say has got it all with his footy knowledge, there will be others who will retire this year.

How about someone from our own club?

I know it doesnt meen everything, but I gotta admire the ferals for snagging figjam, as much as I hate em!

Kirk !
Our players would be harder than diamonds. (I don't kno anythin harder, and they'll be pretty and shiny too)

I agree. I would be more than happy to see Longmire get the coaching job at North, a) because he does deserve to get his chance to be a senior coach and b) I don't like this idea that he takes over as our senior coach when Roos retires. I want fresh ideas to come into the club and I want a brake from the Paul Roos Friendship Club of Assistant Coaches that we currently seem to have.

I agree with bedford that Adam Simpson would be a great pick up as an assistant coach to work with our midfield group, but I would at least like a midfield coach brought in to help change our style of play to a more attacking style. If Tom Harley retires and moves to Sydney as has been discussed we should go all our to make him our Defensive Coach because Geelong is the defence we should be looking to copy. Heck I wouldn't complain if we went after Jade Rawlings if he missed out on either the North or Richmond job and brought him over as a development coach.

Whatever happens, if Longmire does get the North gig we need to bring in some people who aren't connected to Sydney or Paul Roos and allow some fresh ideas to run though the club as we rebuild next season. Plus it allows us to go forward knowing that our future coach could be ANYONE and that is better than getting depressed at the possible outcome of Longmire being the same old, same old after Roos (which might not be the case).

'fresh ideas' is a fair argument, but depends where they got theirs from in the first place as theyre not always better, I think Longmire will be walking away a very good coach from being with us.

I am surprised Sydney is not offering him a Buckley-like succession plan. Do you think Sydney will look to go in a different direction once Roos' time is up?

I think, quietly to a large degree, Longmire has been coaching the senior team all season, and for most part of last season too.

Game day box duties at least.

We aren't because we already did in 2006 when he missed out on the St Kilda job and Geelong in turn offered him an assistant coaches role. He was given the Coaching Co-ordinator Title and promised the Senior Role when Roos stood down at the end of his contract which at the time was to be the end of this season. But Roos re-signed until 2011 at the end of last season it was then taken that Longmire would still take over in 2011, but if the North role came up all bets were off.

Basically Collingwood with Buckley are copying the plan we offered to Longmire in 2006, so we can see how in 2009 how such a plan long term does work. But I suppose Longmire has less power at Sydney than Buckley has at Collingwood and Malthouse has less power at Collingwood than Roos has at Sydney. Hence why our succession plan didn't work as first planned.

"They' have presided over the most "successful" period in modern afl HISTORY!?

There is no "accident" that Lyon has resurrected the Saints!;)

OT..... Longmire.... "TALKS" .......as surprising as that may seem........ he KNOWS it all TOO!

Swans have changed the game!

I concur.Without deriving from the efforts of the staff Roos has put together over his tenure and the success they have been apart of, the jobs for the boys mentality reared its head at the club a few years back and it is now time for a change in attitude to who is best suited to different positions on the coaching panel,ie your example of Harley as a defensive coach.Because the senior coach may have played with a particular player who he thinks is a good footy person or a champion player just retired puts his hand up for a role doesent necessarily mean he is the type of assistant we need going forward.I agree with Bedford to a certain extent about fresh blood straight out of todays game but they must be people who have natural coaching development skills for the particular game role they are to fill. The development skills with our young players in our rebuilding phase is imperative because lets face it most players who have played the game at the elite level would be able to give players instruction on matchday its what they can offer in between games that is the most important.George Stone was a perfect example of this type of coach with the outstanding job he done in the development of Tadgh Kenelly.Personally i hope Damian Hardwick succeeds Roos although it is unlikely as he will likely be in both the Richmond and North jobs up to his ears.

I think North will go for Longmire.

If so, I think we should look at Hardwick or Ken Hinkley at Geelong, but I think Horse will go home.

I love him as well Bez, his son is at my junior footy club . He will make an outstanding coach, too good for a pathetic club in North.

Im not saying hes not a good bloke, or a good coach but whats he gonna offer?

But, but, but, but, wouldn't he be too defensive for Northank? I mean, that's what their supporters say about John Longmire coaching their team.

Ross Lyon who was at Sydney before he coached St.Kilda says hello to North Melbourne supporters. :D

Mase... shockingly I think you're right.

That shot at the box on the weekend with Roos standing behind the table seemingly observing and doing nothing was really startling. It felt like a NAB Cup match where the coaches hand over to an assistant for the day. Not saying there's anything wrong with it... as long as in matches we aren't 'guaranteed' a win Roos is properly coaching, and if we're in strife he takes over straight away.

One of the rumours I heard when Ross Lyon got the Saints job ahead of him was that North was keen to get him on board but Laidley had done too good a job with the list he had & was given an extra contract.

This I think coincides with when Roos gave Longmire a little more control of the reigns.

I'm quite sure that he has the North job as I posted few weeks back & that he will take Blakey & Allison with him who are also ex North p'ship players. It is a ready made team & it makes perfect sense as they have the modern blueprint for success. Ross Lyon took it to the Saints & it is standing up impressively.

No doubt North are smart enough to embrace it.

I'm with you Bedford regarding Simpson. When I heard him interviewed on Footy Classified I was so impressed with him that I mentioned to my wife that he will be great as a new assistant at the Swans. He speaks calmly & seems to be passionate about coaching & willing to learn.
I say we must grab him & perhaps Harley, should Longmire & the other guys leave, & we will be on our way to new success with Roos steering.

Even if Longmire stays, we will need some new voices in the players ears!
