Any ideas on who we will be picking up? First rounder is vitally important but it's those late picks that will really make a difference.

IMHO we need a few small forwards and a half back flanker like Heppell. A bit of class and someone who can go in and win a hard ball. Needs to be a good user too.

Maybe a big forward with a late pick.

It's funny how when you start thinking about which type of player we should draft, you realise that we could use so many different types!

With our first rounder* I want the focus to be on a tallish (186-190cm) mid cum HBF cum wing and the main attributes I am after are footskills, decision making and ability to excecute said footskills and decision making under pressure!

*Although I'd be happy to trade our 1st rounder this year for the right player...

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

Word on the street is that this draft is VERY weak and anything outside the Top 20 is a lottery. Thankfully our first pick will allow us to draft someone decent but, to me, we need to concentrate on taking the best player possible. If Scully goes they may look at a midfielder even with Viney arriving in 2013 or they may look at another tall. I think we have enough small backs and the last time we risked a high pick on a small forward (Maric) it didn't work.

Small forwards are generally taken later in drafts and take a bit more luck to work out so I don't think we will risk our first pick on one but may look at them later in the draft.

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

I have no idea who we will pick up in the 2012 draft other then Viney. 2012 is a super draft though, 2011 is shallow in comparrison. I wish Viney came through this year to counteract that as we can be sure we will need a 1st rounder to get him which is a shame (if we are greedy) as I'd like a few very good kids.

If Scully does go though we have the oppotunity to pick up 2 more young guns on top of JV with our compo if we save them for 2012.

Do you mean 2011 as we have a lot more infomation on those prospects?

If so I'd be keen on Green (ball winner) or Paine (KPP who might be a great FF) with our 1 pick. After that I'd be keen for a small fwd and a small rebounding defender.

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

There are a lot of variables on our involvement in draft draft this year and next given the Scully scenario.

Im going to wait until after trade week to consider who we'll look at but some pace and footskills off half back and a small forward would be nice.

Stephen Hill and Cyril Rioli please :thumbsu:

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

Someone like Hayden Crozier could very well be in consideration come our first round pick (14-18), someone like Elliot Kavanagh could be a slider, he's rated as a top 5 prospect by some I believe but has been injured and out of form.

Jackson Paine is a highly rated KPF, will need some time but I heard a couple of regular TAC watchers say they think he has more upside than Patton.

Sumner may come into calculations, guys like Grigg, Elton, Hoskin-Elliot and McKenzie are all chances to be around our first.

I personally feel the top 20 are very even (apart from the top 3), it will be very hard to predict who will take whom.

In fact, if you want details on those guys go here;

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

Thanks for link tpm- agreed that it'll be a tough draft. I want us to look at state leagues as early as second round to pick up some mature bodies. If the draft really is as shallow as they say we may as well try for some bigger bodied players.

Weird to make a thread on 2012.

I know someone else who mucked up a thread title recently...

Anyone else think we might trade our first rounder if something decent is on the table? We've been ultra protective of our picks in recent years but with a shallow draft we may see more sense in trading the pick to improve the list.

I hope they test the waters with butcher and maybe even Tom Hawkins if the cats will bite, although I highly doubt the latter

But one of the compo picks for Scully and this years first rounder for Butcher IMO is something we should look at, i think we need to be more aggresive in the market to secure something we NEED

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

I just hope we don't pick up another Cook.
I just hope Sting never gets a job in AFL list managment. Imagine a world where half the senior squad, three quarters of the new draftees and the entire rookie list are sacked before the NAB cup is halfway through.

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

I hope we pick up Elton or Paine, depending on which mids fall through to us.

Cook should come along well, and the fact he can play really well as a distributing CHB means that picking another well regarded tall forward can't be a bad thing.

What are the body sizes like on these kids though, no one who weighs under 85kilos anymore!!

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

Elton is 197 and 87-92 iirc

Paine is 194 and 87

Elton a forward ruck who hits the packs hard, not unlike Petrie I guess.

Paine a very good ball user and can move into the midfield, maybe too similar to Watts in some regards. But he has impressed.

Re: Looking to the 2012 draft

For those craving this type of forward, Sheahan stated that Paine is a 'pack crasher'.
Fantastic, we need someone who has no awareness of anything but a head like a brick wall and then uses it to run straight lines at the footy leaving opposition players and team mates in his path of destruction.... although i read through that phantom draft and i cant be bothered checking again but there were a few excellent HBF with good kicking skill which we need just as much

It's the Melbourne supporter curse. Take a tall forward who spends the year in the magoos and then decide he is a dud because he hasn't played a senior game. Happens every year.

Our track record (albiet, under CC) in key forward drafting doesnt inspire any positive notions.

Nick Smith, Luke Molan, Luke Rogers, Michael Newton etc etc.

True but that was under CC. Cook is barely out of the blocks and it's all doom and gloom. When people take that route it's pathetic.

That looks like an awesome list.

Usual half truth. I have no problems with kids play a whole year in the VFL, it's when they are playing in the Casey magoo's I then have concerns, it doesn't matter if they are pick 12 or 112.
