I personally think if MFC wants him, Pick 18 is about right.

But, the concern is his asking price. If MFC agrees to this, in the next few years, MFC could face salary cap problems especially our young guns ie: Morton, Grimes, Scully, Trengove etc wanting more during contract renewal.

In this circumstance, MFC should consider this carefully and if this problems occurs during 2 years time, then I would give Ball a pass and retain our young guns instead.

Comments?

Thank you :)

Yeah I also have my concerns.

I think that if he ended with the Dees, he'd have a bit of trouble winning over his new teammates given that he'll be earning more than most despite clearly not having any interest in playing with them.

That said however, I'd rather have a 25 yr old Luke Ball being the first to the ball and getting thumped by opposition tacklers, rather than our young boys. Also I'm not familiar of any successful #18 picks. At least we know what we're getting with Ball.

Personally i hope we pass on Ball, as its obvious he doesn't want to play for us, and i don't want to waste how money on someone like that... And if we were stupid enough to get him and make him captain were going backwards and disrespecting players like Green, Davey and Beamer 3 players i would rather have as captain any day of the wk over Ball...

But can players put a price on there head in the ND i thought they only could in the PSD?...

The asking price is high, but when players move they get more they are worth, so it's probably about right. It could come back to bite us later on but we do have a lot of cap room so it shouldn't be a big problem.

I find this whole Luke Ball thing pretty embarrassing for the club though. Firstly, he doesn't want to play for us. Many have said, "well, he hasn't said that", but he didn't have to. He's gone in to the ND to basically escape us and get to Collingwood. We pursued him in the trade period, he said no. We tried to get him in to the PSD, so he goes in to the ND. If we still take him, we come across as so desperate. If Luke Ball was the hot chick at a club, we would be the way to drunk guy that cant take the hint. Personally, I don't think we really need him and we should just draft a kid.

I hope we pass too unless he wants to put on the red & blue.

They can nominate what they want but are contracted for 2 years mimimum as part of ND rules.

If that's the case, I would prefer to draft Joel McDonald at Pick 1 PSD.

Joel McDonald is similar age to Ball and similar size. Although, might not be as good as Ball, but still Joel McDonald willing to play for MFC and salary price is way less then Ball. :thumbsu:

That's exactly my reasoning, except Mitch Thorpe for me. Second would be McDonald. The money is a good point too. They wouldn't cost much, they wouldn't risk us losing a young gun down the track and other players wouldn't be pissed about how much they're getting.

I'd personally rather either of them than Luke Ball anyway as strange as that sounds. Our jumper has way to much pride and history to have someone wearing it that is basically being forced to. I wouldn't care if that was Ball, Ablett or Judd. You don't want the privilege of wearing it, then f### off.

why do you want someone who doesn't want to play for the MFC. fk him off!

I'm sick of this ball chat.:thumbsd:

Your argument is flawed. You really expect 15 clubs not to draft Ball because he has nominated Collingwood as his club of preference?

Let's not pick him, and then allow a Brisbane or an Essendon to get him and provide them with 5 years of hardness at the footy and leadership. And then we can just say, "But we thought he wanted to go to Collingwood."

It's not about him wanting to go to Collingwood. It's about him not wanting to play for Melbourne. Purely and simply, I do not want anyone at the club that doesn't want to be there. It's a privilege to wear that jumper. If you don't want to, then i don't want you to. I don't care how other teams handle this situation. If Essendon or Brisbane take him, and he has 5 good years, then good luck to them. I don't care. I'm about Melbourne and my position on this is simple. He doesn't want to be here, so i don't want him to be.

I am struggling to understand the "he doesn't wan't to play for us arguement". Different if this was free agency and you can pick and choose where you play. It is not. He is a professional footballer. If we think he is the best available player bloody well pick him. Its about time we landed a big fish. Pick him and take a chance. He is basically a swap for Mclean anyway and a fairly significant upgrade. Once he gets into the club, we start winning games, our young players develop and we look like playing finals do you think he will walk? I doubt it. Why don't we for once in our bloody lives as a football club back ourselves in. Lets back our rebuild, our system, our list, our structures and the direction we are going.

I tell you what I believe it would be a big statement to the rest of the AFL and the competion that we are fair dinkum and that we will be aggresive in getting long term success. We really lack respect in the broader football community. Time to make a stand and a statement

One of the worst comments. Are you suggesting pick #18 is cursed?

Nope, not cursed. Just saying it can be a bit of a lucky dip at that stage. You're right though, it wasn't a very profound statement as really every pick is always a bit of a gamble.

I guess my point was if you had to pick one player out of Luke Ball, and all the #18 picks since 2001 (hadn't looked at Kerr in 2000) you'd probably go with Ball.

But forget that point - let's just hope that we go for someone like Sheppard, Carlisle, or Bastinac at #18 and they turn out to be 200+ gamers for Melbourne.

If clubs only drafted players who wanted to play for them, Trengrove would slide all the way to Port Adelaide.

You're happy to take an interstate teenager who would obviously rather stay at home but won't take a 25 year old who fits into your club's culture very well? Doesn't make sense. If Melbourne want him and you've got the dough, you'll just take him - as will other clubs before Collingwood get a sniff in.

I respect your opinion, but we'll have to agree to disagree on this matter.

I hate the feeling that we might be being rail-roaded into letting Ball pass at 18. I feel like Collingwood have conspired with Ball's management to make this situation happen. And I don't want to get bent over by those pricks.

If Ball is a required player by our coaching staff, lets get him to the club. He'll warm to Melbourne in no time. :thumbsu:

I guess you should ask him... Melbourne or Port ... I bet he will change his mind pretty quick :)
No one who is based in Vic will want to move to SA ... I really think he will be kicking himself in another 2 years and if we recruit him he will mot likely want to stay.. I think the club is going in the right direction .. for him maybe shor term pain for long term gain.. offer him a 4 year $1.5 million .. do you think this may help??

I'm not too fussed either way. but it would be interesting if we grabbed both McDonald in the PSD and Ball in the ND

MacDonald and Thorp would be good enough even if we miss out on Ball.

This is probably the smartest thread that a melbourne supporter has made, about the luke ball saga.
