Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

What's happened to Blackwell in the pre-season?

I am a bit worried that he hasn't played a game in the pre-season even though I understand the reasons for his non-selection, i.e. Carrazzo's legspeed. I'd much rather see Blackwell in the middle than the Bentick with an eye to the long term and I think he's a smarter footballer than AB.

Probably is smarter, but they are way too different. We need an in and under player, and blackwell is not that player, bentick is. They are two different players, who do two different roles.

AWG, Blackers is very much in and under. I understand you would not seen much of him being down in Tassie. I can assure you that on the weekend he was at nearly every contest, in and under nearly every pack. He is an extractor just like AB. I suspect the difference at the moment is more that AB is built like a tank, whereas Blackers is still very slight. I don't think Blackers has the body type to build up as much bulk as AB, and as an extractor at AFL level he will be pushed off the ball a bit easier than AB. That isn't to say I don't think he will make it. I really liked his game on the weekend, although the opposition were understrength with very few Hawthorn listed players playing. But he is definitely in and under. Would like to see him eventually get some game time in the 1's, playing off the bench and joining the mid-field rotation to give AB a breather.

About
A father-son selection in 2004, the son of former Carlton midfielder Wayne Blackwell played at VFL level for the Northern Bullants in his debut year. By the end of the season, he was playing well enough to be considered for senior selection, but suffered a broken jaw and missed the VFL finals.

Records
Draft history: NAB 2004 AFL Draft 3rd round father-son selection (Carlton) No. 41 overall.

10 Questions…. With Luke Blackwell

Back when we were kids we used to tell all the other kids in the playground how good our Dad’s were at footy. Plainly & simply, it was a bald faced lie. Mike’ More.

Back when we were kids we used to tell all the other kids in the playground how good our Dad’s were at footy. Plainly & simply, it was a bald faced lie. Mike’s Dad can’t even kick a footy, let alone play the game. Imagine being able to really brag about how good your Dad was… and not be making it up? Well, we sought out someone who would know for sure – Luke Blackwell – who is making strides of his own for Carlton in 2006.

1 & 2. What was your role on the weekend, and how do you think you went?

My role was to run through the midfield, and give some of the main blokes a bit of a rest. I went OK in the first half, but not so much in the second. In the second half I spent some time at half forward, and I guess I was getting caught in the play a bit.

3. Carlton’s bench rotations seem more pronounced this year. Is that part of the plan going into the game, or is that something that the coaching staff decide during the game?

We all know we may need to come off during a game for a rest, but its mainly the Coaching staff taking us on & off at different times. It’s not really pre-planned.

4. Tell us about your first goal in AFL footy.

Yeah, it was good to get my first goal. We really needed one at the time, and I was happy to kick one.

5. You played a couple of games in the WAFL prior to coming to Melbourne. What is the pace and tempo like in the WAFL? Is it similar to the VFL?

The WAFL and VFL are pretty similar – in the WAFL the grounds are a bit larger, and the game is a bit quicker. The VFL is a little harder and tighter in the clinches. The quality of the players is about the same – no doubt that the AFL is a massive step-up though.

6. In the WAFL, when did Carlton start to seriously monitor your progress as a junior footballer?

It was before I was playing seniors – they used to come over & watch me play. They would let me know how I was going, and gave me advice on things to work on.

7. Is there any friendly banter between yourself and your Dad? For example, have you let him know you debuted for the Blues at a much younger age than he did?

Not really – maybe after a few beers! He mainly gives me advice on the game, and how I’m going.

8. Your old man got 3 weeks for striking Merv Neagle before the opening bounce at Windy Hill in 1985. Do you plan on dishing out the same treatment to Jay Neagle when you line up on him for the first time?

I didn’t know that – who does Neagle play for? Essendon. I’ll have to keep an eye out for him then…

9. This year, 2 more WA boys have arrived to the club. Have you played a part in welcoming them to Melbourne and helping assist in the transition?

I’ve become pretty good friends with them – especially with Kennedy, but we weren’t assigned to look after players or anything like that. Perth is a long long way away so it’s good to have some mates over here.

10.Yourself, Bentick and Marc Murphy loom as being important forces in our midfield for years to come. How do you like playing alongside these guys, and our other young midfielders?

It’s really good playing with blokes about your age – over time we can understand how each other plays the game. If we can have a few years playing together we could become a pretty important unit for the Club.

After a strong 2005 in the VFL and some stunning midfield performances for the Bullants earlier this year, ‘Blackers’ played his third AFL game on our close loss to the Kangaroos, and looked right at home. Here’s hoping he’s right about our emerging midfield unit for the future – and lets not doubt the huge role Blackwell could have in it.

Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

I know I'm repeating myself, but what has happened to Blackwell?

He does lack leg speed and size and will probably play a similar role to Bentick or Murphy in the team, but I thought he would have played last week in light of the season ending injury to Stevens. I'm beginning to worry that he isn't going to make it and we have "wasted" another draft pick in an OK draft. :(

Could he be trade bait? :o

Ok thanks Gilly. :thumbsu:

Homer Simpson for Lance said:
Carlton has many midfielders/flankers that would not be considered quick.

1/Bryce
2/murph

3/bentick
4/houla
5/scotty
6/blackwell
7/ stevo.....quick enough ......but not real fast

Expect carlton to surround the most talented from this list with Walker and Carrazzo and new speedier mids it recruits.....eg grigg, ando, Russell, Jacko......and picks in future drafts.

I think Bentick is rated a lot higher than blackwell by coaching staff. Stronger, harder in and under, better foot disposal. Blackers has footy smarts but I dont think it will be enough.

Blackers was 1 of the best in 1st intra club pre-season but they still played Jacko before him in NAB CUP.......now Jacko selected for rnd 5 before Blackers.

I think it's almost certain carlton will elevate both Jacko and Aisake next year.

That means at least 6........more likely 7 delistings
1/teague
2/saddington
3/McLaren
4/Bannister
5/kouta?
6/Lappo?
7/Raso/Flint/Blackwell

Blackers may survive next years cull........but I dont expect him to stay on the list much beyond that. If carlton got a real gun inside mid with pace I think AB might struggle to hold his place as well.

Are Gibbs and Murphy really that slow? I would've thought they were some of the quickest in the team

Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

Blackwell will struggle to get a game in our revamped midfield next year in light of the arrival Judd and Hadley.

I think 2008 will be his last year on our list unless he plays 10 games or more and stars.

I just can't see it happening.

It's going to be extremely hard for him to crack a game ahead of the likes of Russell, Grigg, Jackson and Bentick in the midfield or even the forwardline next year. All of those players are either tall midfielder/half forwards with leg speed or in AB's case, a big bodied midfielder who isn't a titch like Blackers. I think Saddington, Ackland, Blackwell, Hartlett and Bannister are the names who might get the chop next year to allow us to draft another five players.

Is Blackwell out of contract next year?

he signed a 2 year deal in 06 so he will be out of contract

He might survive because I forgot Wiggins who is another likely delistee next year.

But we should still turn over about four to five players each year given the state of our list and get fresher blood into the club.

Ackland, Saddington, Bannister and Wiggins should get the axe before Hartlett and Blackwell. :thumbsu:

Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

I have faith in Blackwell - i dont know why exactly... but i do agree with you General, he'll have to take a big step up next year.

Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

Is Lukey gone after Ellard got the nod ahead of him last night and got the ball?

I think he will struggle after Armfield and Pfeiffer showed they have something the side needs more than a small in and under mid.

Sorry to be CaptainObvious, but I like Blackwell and it's a shame this is probably his last year on our list.

Re: 13. Luke Blackwell

Luke Blackwell is a possibility to return to the VFL this week after a layoff with injury. Goodluck to the kid.
