Mentioned in some other threads but havn't seen one discussing this kid so here goes: I've become a fan this year...

20YO, just 13 games
191cm, 86 kg (will build)
Has shown he can hold down a key defensive spot - I liked his effort on Barry Hall, got in his face & Bazza got a couple of soft ones IMO.
Looks to have some endurance, covered a fair bit of ground on Friday
Excellent hands & also balance when going for overhead marks
Despite what the CH7 knobs said I reckon his disposal is fine
Good 1% efforts, sprints to spoil & smother etc.

Yes, very early days so no remarks please that I am pumping him up too soon but I do like the look of him.

The question though, what will be his ideal position?

He would take a bit of confidence out of Friday night, I would have thought. Will be interesting to see the matchups v Eagles, reckon he could keep Hansen quiet, and he is a key to thier forward line.

Alot of people say he is too short to play full back, but if he is athletic enough that should not make much difference, after all Matthew Scarlett is only 192.

Think he might become a pretty good player for us, but still makes mistakes due to inexperience.

One perfect example was Friday night when he ran into trouble and gave a 1 metre handball (maybe less) to a player next to him, who in turn had a Collingwood player right there with him and we coughed it up. But I would still prefer to give him the job of running with an opposition forward instead of Bowden. At least he plays on his opponent.

Not sure of his ideal position though.

Like him. Also liked his effort Friday night when he sprinted 30 or 40 metres to the wing to spoil a certain Pies' mark - late in the game when it was already in the bag. He was no certainty to make the contest but managed to punch the ball over the boundary anyway. Not something I'm too accustomed to seeing from a player with a yellow sash, particularly when well into the last quarter.
Keep him away from those falling goal posts and I hope he'll be a handy player in next few years.

He is very similar to a young Darren Gaspar - been to the same kicking coach, too. I suspect he will excite and frustrate in equal measure for some time yet. His disposal is not nearly AFL class yet, and his turnovers are shocking. His long kicks float and have little penetration. Tall athletic blond bloke who catches the eye but can't kick... he really needs to learn from Foley how to improve his disposal.

Let's not anoint him the next great CHB yet (which probably would be the spot for him if he bulks up over the next 2-3 pre-seasons without losing his athleticism). He's played reasonable football this year at times, but wouldn't get a game in a good side. IF his disposal improves, the tools are there to make the grade (after all, Gaspar did make AA despite his kicking).

with ya all the way dude........early days thought WTF but this kid is what i keep on talking about. He has the hunger and drive....has gone from a dud about to happen, to a comando that instills fear in the enemy. Well done Luke, you kick butt.

As for the ideal postion?...anywhere where his coach points him too..thats why he kicks it...****ing commando man...

has gone from looking lost in one year, to belonging the next..not like other more notables that are in year 6 or 7 and we still wait for a sembalnce of anything that suggests they belong. ;)

know what you are saying man....but there is a big big difference...do you know what that is? he is 20...we didnt have the gas when he was 20...the swans got him with pick 1 at 20. ;)

The swans got Gas when he was 18. He came to us 2 years later when he was ... 20. The actual difference is that Gas consistently beat the opposition's best forward, while McGuane's getting wraps here for keeping Barry Hall to 6 goals.

Im not going to bag the Gas bc he was a great servant of the club, but Mcguanes kicking is much better than gaspars/kellaways. Hes got penetration and can kick it 50, gas and kellaway couldnt hit it 30 yards. Confidant that with hard work he can be a reasonable kick unlike the afore mentioned

McGuane has shown he does possess footskill, but like many of his comrades his turnovers are just diabolical. Gaspar and Kellaway could barely execute a drop punt at any time, McGuane can but unfortunately delivers as many shockers as precision passes. Like Raines and Edwards and Tambling and Howat and Jackson and Connors and Riewoldt and Thursty........etc etc he just needs to get those brain fade kicks out of his repertoire, which can be done!

I'm with many of you on this, McGuane might not have shown he is the next key defender, but he has shown something which I like very much even though I can't quite pin down what it is.

His kicking isn't half as bad as you describe. You must be seeing things that I don't

Needs a lot of work. From what i have seen, it is his decision making which sometimes lets him down...but that is to expected considering his lack of experience. Needs to chuck on a few more Kevin Garnetts over the pre-season and hopefully work out when is the right time to punch as opposed to attempting to go for a hanger!

:)Think we can be pretty happy with McGuane's development in 2007.

Granted he still has some more developing to do, but I think he is integral to our backline as one of three talls.

Skills aren't as bad as many people make out.

Ask yourself the question: How many people when picking their best 22 at the start of the year had McGuane in the line-up?

I'll be the first to put my hand up to say I didn't, but I'm certain he commands a spot now.

Will only get better with more game sunder the belt!

Keep up the good work Goldy. Good post.
Young key defenders take a minimum of four years. What we have now in Luke is a bonus. Will get better and the thing that I like about him is that he will not stop until he has reached his potential.
This kid won't die wondering. Will give it his all. And I reckon what he has is going to be good enough. Won't be a star. But will be a very, very serviceable player.
Put it this way:
McGuane>Hall

Thats more a problem with our player development in general.

What's a guy doing standing next to him when he's under the pump. Should either be providing a shepard or getting out of the way to create space.

We seem to do this alot, and you can see the good running sides always have a safety outlet in a particular direction. Hopefully after another preseason we'll start to see the guys working harder for each other and getting a little more composure when they're under pressure.

Definetly like the look if this... very strong athletic defeder and will only get stronger and smarter...

Backs himself which is a good sign, his disposal has let him down at times but he is a very good kick and makes the right decision everytime... I think him and thursfield will be a very handy combination just like the glory days of gaspar and kellaway

I must have missed something
