Luke Shuey - Where Does He Rank?

When compared to one of the greatest games in modern times then no, he doesnā€™t.

Judd plays 18 GF instead of shuey and we lose 9/10 times.

Why do we lose 9/10 times? How are you calculating these random percentages?

Is it not more likely that the player that has consistently been significantly better over their career have a greater impact on a game than not?

Cmon mate now you're just taking the piss.

Judd in the conversation for best player in the modern game. Also at his peak he was ridiculous, and a more noted big game performer. Shueyā€™s GF was amazing granted but the 9/10 thing is such a long bow. Not too many win Normā€™s in losing GFā€™s either

Judd's peak and as a player particularly for West Coast is at a significantly higher level than Shuey's ability is.

However Shuey does have the highest impact rating for any grand final since recording stats. Literally 30% higher than Martin's best norm smith performance.

You can argue about any great player being a better player than Shuey and you are almost always right, but in that grand final he put in a performance that was above and beyond what anyone has done in modern times. As he's actually done it, you can make up all the hypotheticals you like but if anyone other than Shuey plays instead of him we likely lose. Shuey played half the match with a tag and was the only reason we were still in the game at half time. The only player who has a realistic claim to rivalling Shuey for that 2018 norm smith is Schofield as once he was moved onto degoey he won 11 consecutive one on ones against the player that had destroyed us up until that point. Hutchings and Sheed a distant third with Sheed kicking the winning goal in a great all round performance and Hutchings shutting down sidebottom stopping his amazing movement into the forward 50. You can probably list 6 players for our side who played their greatest ever game for us in that match and a lot of them were the unheralded players.

Matera won us our first premiership (along with Sumich, hugely underrated game) however tagging wasn't a thing and he played in a different era. He will always be remembered for that and along with Shuey in 2018 and Ablett in 1989 they are up there as the greatest norm smith winning performances.

The 2018 Grand final doesn't however change Shuey's ranking career wise in relation to our other mids and the truth is he is a good step behind the first tier and im probably being slightly harsh on Kemp here in only having Matera, Judd and Cousins in that group.

Judd's 2005 was better than Embley's 2006.
Judd was hands down the best player on the ground that day, I would''ve had Kerr equally as good as Embley in 2006.
I do think that Shuey was better than both, however.

Taking out the match committee and injuryā€™s in ā€˜05 the only reason we lost that game was because Daniel Kerr came off with a broken/fractured leg (he did come back on).

He was by far our best and most influential player when he was on the ground and when he was off was when Sydney did their damage.

Big Shuey fan here, but still think Schoey was the rightful norm smith winner.

One of the things I loved about Shuey was since day 1, he bought a winners mentality to the club, and even now you can still see him it in him, he has given this club his all.

All premiership players except one in that list, and the year after he retired, we won a premiership. In other words, Priddis is not top 10!

Top 5 forwards in the AFL era:

2. Tom Lynch (Richmond)
3. Quinten Lynch
4. James Podsiadly
5. Shane Ellen

Embley and Priddis above Shuey must be taking the piss.

it was literally the best GF performance of all time based off CD.

More due to Shuey's peak being shorter (not his fault entirely) - if he sustained 2018 for more than a couple of seasons he'd be a lock for top 5 - but he didn't so he isn't.
