i think it just sucks how a great player that manages to get back from yet another injury can be struck downs as hard as poor Luke
an injured elbow i could handle but a broken neck is just so unfair to a player that has struggled with injuries especially at subiaco oval knee reconstruction dislocated elbow (or something like that) twice and know playing for his WAFL side a broken neck (3 fractured vertebre)

but i have to agree with what langdon said on basil's footy show earlier today "if anyone can fight back from this it is luke toia"

Yep, you got to feel for the guy! He has had the worst run of injuries and he is a good player but he always gets goddam injured. It will be probably the last straw and he may have to retire from the AFL and even the WAFL. :(

Toia's a little champ and my deepest sympathies go out to him. Hope he makes a complete recovery and is able to keep playing (providing he wants to).

Can anyone fill me in on what exactly he did? Saw the incident... but haven't heard anything since.

I wasnt there I only saw it on the ABC but he landed on his head as everyone saw, He was on the ground in some pain but walked off. Later they said he had been taken off to hospital for a checkup.

Next thing I heard yesterday he had fractured his neck and may not play again.

Lets hope he makes a full recovery. I don't know about neck injuries but I would have thought that once your neck is broken it would be fragile and it would be to dangerous to play again.

Best wishes to Luke Toia for a smooth and speedy recovery. He's a gutsy little player, so I hope he recovers well enough to take his place again as an AFL footballer.

Yeah same. we heard it on the news over here. Lukes dad used to work for my dad, so i have met him before. get well soon Luke.

I'm amazed the bloke is not full-scale para/quadraplegic after that fall. But I suppose the big question is: even if he wants to play on, can the Dockers afford to keep him on their list?

There was plenty of criticism over the way the Dockers had handled the sacking of Damian Drum, so here's a chance to see whether they have learned anything from the experience.

A few years ago, the Western Bulldogs kept one of their young players on the list even though he was recovering from cancer. They took the attitude that they had to back the player for a year even though they knew it was highly unlikey this kid would play AFL football. If they delisted him there and then, they knew that the player's morale would plummet.

It's the same situation with Luke Toia. With his injuries, there seems to be little chance that he'll play football again, but the club has to stick by him for at least next season. At the very least, it'll indicate to Toia that he has the club behind him in every way.

The last point is that footy clubs tend to be tightly knit places, and Toia will have his mates within the playing list. How would they feel if Freo did the wrong thing by Toia in this extraordinary situation?

yeah the club needs to stick by him
even though he wont be playing footy for probly most of next season they need to give him support and that way he may make it back to afl footy which will be great

I'd just like to add my sympathies and praise for Luke Toia. He's a good little player and the Dockers have been very unfortunate to lose him to a shocking run of injuries. I hope he makes a full recovery.

BTW, I felt that the deplorable lack of effort by the Freo players in the last quarter today was an insult to Toia, who had apparently been in the rooms before the game to inspire them. Here's a guy who puts his body on the line every week and his teammates reward him with that pitiful show.

Shame on the lot of them!

yeah i agree i heard that he was in the rooms before the game and you'd think that they would have made that extra special effort to win the game for him but obviously they just couldn't win it for him

Aparently the whole Essendon team send Luke a card which I thought was a very nice gesture :)

what essendon done was showed the league why they are one of the best teams going around
on field they play excellent footy and off field they are just a great bunch of guyz
now lets just hope that toia will be back to his best footy in the 2003 season 2002 would be better but the reality is that i think he will still be in rehabilitation then

Like most blokes I reckon dockerbabe would be a nick belonging to the hottest purple swivel hipped babe going.

Hope I wasn't thinking about the wrong person.

Re: Nice touch by Essendon

When I was younger he was always my favourite player... What ever happened to Luke?

The bottom grade (one day) at my cricket club were on the end on many a thrashing at the hands of Greenrange CC including one L Toia until a year or two ago, so he was still alive then. :)

Forget what dockerbabe's doing, I just realised it has already been over a decade since using 'z' for the plural was the norm. Man I'm getting old!

played his days out at subi, then went back home to kalgoolie for a while there. not sure what he's up to now... played footy with his brother about three years ago so maybe look is still in the area. i liked toia as well. toia and callaghan were a tough midfield unit when up and running
